The city appeared for the first time in historical records under its medieval Greek name of Argyrocastron (Greek: Αργυρόκαστρον), as mentioned by John VI Kantakouzenos in 1336. The name comes from the Medieval Greek ἀργυρόν (argyron), meaning "silver", and κάστρον (kastron), derived from the Latin castrum, meaning "castle" or "fortress"; thus "silver castle". Byzantine chronicles also used the similar name Argyropolyhni, meaning silvertown. The definite Albanian form of the name of city is Gjirokastra, of which derives from the Greek name. (WIKIPEDIA).
@polopolo37044 жыл бұрын
I have one other option for to explained dhe etymology about the name Gjirokastër. Aργυρο(Ancient Greek)- Aσήμι(Today Greek)-No etymology from greek language. Argjënd(Alb)- gold white - etymology from albania language means ar(gold) + gjiri i gruas që nxjer qumësht të bardhë(the breast of the woman who produces white milk). This is also supported by the legend of the Gjirokastra castle. Thank you Alina.
