As someone who has worked in support for years, this is so true! For example: Error message reads "Error, no internet connection. Unable to save." We still get a call, "Hey, the computer is broken. I saw an error message.", we ask "What did it say", they reply "I don't know. I closed it and it didn't save my work."

This situation is really annoying on both perspectives. On one, the person doesn't understand the struggles that other people find themselves in. On the other, the person doesn't understand something that they have come across the first time and being looked down upon from other people's expectations. On one hand, the person struggling to understand should learn how things works via an alternative source, like videos, guides or easy to read documentations. On the other, the person seeing other people struggle shouldn't go complain about them, instead try to make a solution which works for the both of ya. There won't be anyone else doing it, unless whoever will be doing it has encountered this problem themselves. Keep in mind, that people are not born as programmers and most of the time, people will struggle in steps along the way. The more complicated the guides become, the more frequent it becomes. This statement is not just only true for "Installing Linux" or "Following steps on how to install a program in Linux"... it's apparent in every aspect of your life. Think about it.

You don't need to be a programmer to install things on Linux. Just use an easy distro like Mint, Fedora, Ubuntu, or Elementary and it's point and click. Of course Arch is easy, you've been using it on a daily basis for quite some time now. @@mrpiggy105 I think you're not doing anyone any favors by calling it a mindset problem, honestly. I think if not for the few nerds that stood around thought the next joe how to use the command line on linux we wouldn't have had HALF of the linux population right now, and you know why windows is so much easier to get into? it's because the knowledge that's being shared in general, is that much easier to share. For an "easy" linux distro I had to go read around 1 page before I felt like I was ready to take it on, for windows a guy just came in, showed me how to install windows once, told me about the internet and what I can do with it verbally, and boom, I had acess to instant gratification and shit "just worked". Things like this video saying "I will never understand the windows user" stem from the fact that everybody I think just forgot where they really come from, I am sure for anyone how easy the windows knowledge could be expanded was more of a thing than anything... I mean come on... I learned this much shit about windows throughout life because it simply worked like how I expected it to work, linux kinda just... told me it can't update packages and stood stuck for me like that, tried fixing it for hours so I could finally experience linux in it's glory only to give up because nobody on the discord tech linux server wanted to give me actual help, and everybody was too busy flailing their cock around telling me the distro I installed was apparently just "bad" and that generally I shouldn't go for those, instead of trying to find a fix to my error, something I had to come in with after eventually searching up google like a madman for 2 hours before finally giving in and wanting a third party to help out. Turns out? I never fixed that problem, I just went back to windows. I don't know how it's like to be in your boots, I wish I knew, maybe if linux just worked for me and I fIxed it in the time I gave it, maybe I could've now BASKED in glorious linux energy and finally look down upon the windows peasant... sadly though? I was in the ignorant, Windows/Microsoft "community" before, back when I used Windows. When Microsoft started to bloat the system even more (specially with Windows 11), I decided it was enough and switched to Linux. I started with Ubuntu, then jumped to Mint, and then Manjaro, then EndeavorOS, and nowadays I daily drive Arch Linux, because (and this is just my preference) it feels right to use a system that only has what I am going to use, and not dozens of applications I have to manually remove or disable, one by one (like Windows 11/10). Was it a walk in the park the first few times I installed Linux? No, in fact, I almost bricked my laptop trying to install Arch with little to no knowledge about the system, but when I started using distros that are more beginner friendly (Ubuntu, Manjaro, Mint etc.), I gradually started to understand how Linux operates and got comfortable using it. Nowadays, the concept of daily driving Windows is alien to me. I sometimes boot up a virtual machine to use an obscure Windows application, but that's pretty much all the contact I have with Windows for the past few years. To anyone starting Linux, don't be scared of the terminal, and don't think Linux is hard to understand and getting used to, in fact, it has a pretty straight forward file system compared to Windows, and downloading and running applications on it is also pretty simple. The stereotype of Linux being "hard to use" needs to die, it only makes more people afraid to daily drive it and detach from Windows.

Once you have faith and are used to something you won't switch. It takes a big error on their part for the majority of consumers to notice and be upset. (And then some luck for them to find a alternative that is actually good, because you gotta actually research for that in a lot of fields.) But also I'll be real I've seen enough posts about hardware issues troubleshooting my own, and even posts about hardware issues on YT when not troubleshooting, that it can't actually be insanely rare like Linux users on YT act like. But yes there are tons of issues on Windows too for some users. I see that too. Probably more common than Linux because Microsoft themselves ship broken updates that aren't system specific a bunch of times.

Windows: you don't have to do anything other than install steam, windows update does your drivers and everything for you. easy distros vs Steam OS: setting up gamemode, and gamescope can be a hastle and all the other little tweaks that steam OS has for running FSR through gamescope and things like that are tricky, mangohud configs out of the box on steam os is nice. Arch: You saying that "Your GPU version is listed" falls flat when someone has an RTX 3060 or whatever and the documentation says something like "Turing" they have no idea what Turing is. They also have to FIND that Nvidia page, they have to learn the arch documentation exists in the first place and they have to figure out what command they need to type into the scary terminal once they find out what Turing even is. But if you go install Arco Linux or something it's pretty much all set up for you as long as you don't care about gamescope and stuff.

You're wrong about windows. The windows update nvidia drivers were always a couple of versions behind the one supplied by nvidia's website so I had to go download it anyway, and it updates on It's own so it was one extra 'check for updates' program I had to keep in mind. Gamescope and gamemode aren't needed to run games. If you want to use FSR on non supported games on windows you also must install 3rd party software just like linux or fiddle with your gpu drivers. "Your gpu version is listed" refers to how to install drivers on a '''hard''' distro, all mainstream ones check it for you and you just have to click 'install', no need to go to get the drivers from nvidia's website.

I have used and gamed on Ubuntu, Debian and Arch. I will mostly exclude Arch from this discussion as it is explicitly advised against using for new users in the video. When I first tried Linux I installed Ubuntu. One of the first things I did was simply search the web for "install steam Ubuntu" and follow the instructions. Within like 2 minutes I had it installed. Then I looked up some basic information about gaming on Linux, I think like a single 5 min article or so, which basically said "go and enable proton for all titles in steam" I did not touch that configuration at all after that, it just worked for everything I tried. The most I had to to was occasionally looking up a game on protondb to see which version of proton to use for a given game which is a one-time on first startup thing. Debian worked exactly the same, except I just liked it better as I simply preferred the look of KDE to Ubuntu's GNOME. Oh and Arch has by the way been about the same, took a little longer to install but I don't think I have had any real problems (in the gaming department at least.) As for Windows, it was constantly giving me problems when I used it, that's what I was so surprised about when moving to Linux, I expected it to have more problems than Windows but it actually had less. Perfect? No! But I personally find the issues I run into on Linux *much* easier to deal with, usually just look it up online and find a command that fixes it, whereas on Windows I would usually have to use that godforsaken "Registry Editor" or stuff like that.

I would say that as long as nothing about Windows really infuriates you yet, you don't need to switch. I switched to Linux in 2017 out of pure nerd curiosity. The switch worked out well for me because I'm not "married" to any program or game that only works on Windows. If I had to give reasons why I don't want to go back to Windows, it would mainly be the horror stories of Windows users "fighting their OS for control". Microsoft constantly finding ways to keep Edge as your default browser, updates triggering in the middle of important tasks, forcing the use of a Microsoft account, showing Bing results in the start menu when I don't want them, I saw Cortana somehow trigger several times during someone's livestream. The idea of Windows forcing decisions on me is what keeps me on Linux.

I am software developer, my setup for work is tiling WM with disabled decorations, 20 virtual desktops, half assigned for stable tasks, half act as temporary spaces. For media consumption I can open entire KDE desktop alongside on the same running machine. Also trusted software from distribution packages, in 2006 it felt like future. I've expected Windows users to catch up in a few years, never happened. For programming I've heard chocolatey and powershell solved some needs on Windows, never tried. Paraphrasing what Brodie said: If you're happy with what you have, keep using it. Most Linux users don't WANT you to leave the setup you're perfectly happy with. The upside is only for people that aren't happy with Windows. I remember Windows 10 having a issue with updates bricking the system if the user uninstalled MS Edge, for those people installing Linux might be a better choice than constantly fighting with Windows about what their computer should do/have installed. Finding which key to edit on the registry to make Windows behave as you want is pretty advanced user stuff, if you're comfortable doing that you probably would have no issues using the terminal. Counterpoint, Linux simply will not work for my use case. Why? showstoppers in software. Not even anticheat. I need a scaler for scaling old software on my 4k display. Then just use gamescope right? wrong, I have an nvidia card and gamescope crashes see gamescope issue 1662. Sometimes I like to play Alpha Centauri, I have for 26 years now, I love that game. It does not work on Linux without the sound breaking, no amount of scripts to reencode the sound files helps, I have tried. Some Linux users say it works perfectly, but having listened to a recording of them playing the game, it does not. I also like to play old arcade games through retroarch, specifically because of the sonkun shader set. But currently if you use retroarch with vulkan video backend on nvidia and wayland, it simply crashes on executing content. I like to play Warframe with friends, while it works under Linux, it looks kinda dull, so I use nvidia overlay to enhance the colors. The only way I can do that on Linux is through reshade, but that's a bannable offense on Warframe. So for these reasons Linux is not currently viable for me.

And why do some distributions make you choose what ISO to download ? The installer can use basic VGA output or whatever right ? Why not have 1 ISO which uses the Internet to download the package automatically based on the hardware ? Why complicate things ?

Windows works perfectly fine for me and has never given me any issues because I know what I’m doing. My files and workflow are organized. I prefer downloading files from the web instead of using the terminal because I like to see the website, understand what I’m downloading, and control where I store the installed software. I don’t like the way Linux stores installed software. I download a lot of random games from the web, and I find it much easier to just click on an .exe file rather than spending even a minute tinkering with configurations. I also use a laptop, and the touchpad isn’t nearly as smooth in Linux as it is in Windows. I prefer Windows touchpad gestures, which feel more refined. That said, I love Linux too. It’s amazing and comforting to know that everything I see in front of me is open-source. I wish I could get the best of both worlds. I know a lot of Windows users can be annoying because they overlook many details, but I hate when I see videos criticizing Windows users. I have my reasons for sticking with Windows-there’s almost no reason for me to switch to Linux and worry about whether everything will work smoothly or not.

In 2005 Ubuntu introduced GUI to install applications. Same approach later used by Apple Store, Microsoft Store. Installing from trusted sources is much safer than downloading from web. But downloading works too - downloaded Spelunky, extracted, granted executable permissions - started. With Wine, automatically. Nowadays I have no idea what Steam games I've installed run with Proton. I understand desire to stick with existing setup. Linux is not perfect replacement, there are issues but they are more subtle. Other than that, there are just small issues here and there that add to the annoyance. I get frustrated and angry easily, by the way. I dual-booted for about a month, mostly using Linux, but had a bad experience overall. I decided to stick with one. I nuked Windows and used Linux for a while, but the battery life sucked, and the touchpad nearly made me puke. Rolling release, which means you have usually the latest and greatest updates. And that can be huge. Let's say you have a production load balancer on arch (and hopefully redundant). You are running the latest version of that particular piece of load blancer software you are using, which also means you have the latest and hottest features available. Compare it to debian. Chances are you are 2 or 4 versions behind it and even the next major debian release won't bump you up to the current latest and greatest version.

I have desktop machines that run Windows, MacOS and Linux (PopOS, Fedora, and Arch). The order of hours used is: 1. Windows - Runs everything I need for work and gaming without issue and full support. By far the OS I use the most because it runs the most software. The signing security model is useful for trust versus downloading random stuff and assuming it’s all ok if it’s linked from a trusted source. 2. MacOS - Useful for iOS/MacOS development and Adobe products. 3. Linux - SteamDeck gets the most use followed by PopOS for hobby project development. The applications are usually not better. The best you can hope for is the same experience as another OS. Games are better on consoles/gaming PCs, client work software is also better on Windows/MacOS especially with WSL2 on Windows. The only reason I use Linux desktop is because it’s fun to try something different and the tiling Windows managers are great. For the OS differences, there are lots of annoying things about all three. But I don’t want to spend my time in the OS, I want to spend my time in the applications I run. There is time in the terminal but you get WSL2 on Windows so it’s a Linux terminal.

We can google it, find the package name, install it with your favorite package manager and be golden. But the average person that buys a PC at bestbuy to watch netflix and play the odd game is not going to do that. And instead of accepting that and adapting to that audience by making things easy, like all the OS' that have a big market share, you just turn your nose up at them and say "Well you are just dumb. I dont understand windows users." And say somebody tries it. They ask for help in their distro forum and they get some ass saying "RTFM". Yeah good job attracting new people. If the Linux user base increases in any measurable manner, I believe it will be thanks to Valve and nobody else at this rate. They seem to be the only developers interested in making Linux accessible to even the most PC non savvy people.

It is so disingenuous to say there are "no problems" with Linux. You can follow the instructions to the T and something will still break. It's not an issue of "reading the manual", it's an issue with how unstable Linux is in general. Just because YOU don't experience any problems, doesn't mean no one else does. And clearly, it's very common. So for you to completely disregard someones experience because "things just work" on your end, doesn't mean they were doing something wrong. As a Windows user who switched to Linux myself, I am always running into new issues every single day. I know what I'm doing, I read the instructions carefully, but things don't work, so I need to troubleshoot it. Often times I'm missing some dependency that wasn't mentioned in the instructions. Sometimes even if I have everything set up properly, it won't work regardless. Look, I love Linux, but it is undeniable that Windows is just simpler for the average user. If it wasn't for privacy concerns, I wouldn't be using Linux, because I can't think of anything beyond it's FOSS nature and customization to be superior to Windows for the average user.

You're missing the context of there having no problems. People are acting like SteamOS will be the saviour of gaming on Linux because it works ~unlike other distros~. In this context it's true that there are no problems, SteamOS isn't a magical fix, any inherent problem with Linux gaming (anticheat) will still plague SteamOS. In my experience Linux isn't more or less stable than Windows, just the set of problems are different, and it's personal preference which one you tackle. I had to use plenty of powershell, regedit, and workarounds to make windows do what I wanted how I wanted, Linux just lets me do it without a fight.

I've always had issues with Linux on my PC (I have NVIDIA GPU and YES I installed the right Linux drivers). I've tried multiple distros and everywhere I've run into some issues/bugs that only one or two people have had... All I know is that these problems were caused by my hardware, and trying to fix them requires a really good understanding of Linux. Honestly, I've only used GNOME as my DE and I've always had issues with it, it just breaks after a week or two and the system becomes unstable. I mostly use the default settings and don't do anything other than install the apps I need for work. I might try Linux again with KDE or something, but I'm really frustrated and it won't happen anytime soon. I've been saying this for a while but IMO the issue is things have gotten too easy to use. People no longer have to learn something to use a computer and that's been causing a decline in tech literacy. Back in the DOS days, you had to learn basic things like how to navigate filesystems, what different types of files do, etc because when you turned on a computer you were met with a blinking cursor and that's it. In win9x you had to still set IRQ's manually if you wanted to install a piece of hardware sometimes. All of these things led to a "base" level of understanding. That's no longer the case, it's click here click there and computer does magic, no base understanding needed. Those people have no idea what to do when met with an issue because they have no foundational knowledge, but instead of recognizing this, they blame the computer or the software because no, they can never be wrong, they clicked the button. It's irritating.

A very ranty rant. This dissonance is common, Linux users struggle to grasp the problems Windows users face. I remember trying to game on Ubuntu and my PC ran graphics on my CPU instead of my GPU. I didn't notice until way later on Windows because I'm not tech literate. I couldn't identify the problem so I kept my dual-boot for billing until a Windows update broke it, where I threw my hands into the air and now I'm stuck navigating F2 to boot up Windows. Could I fix that? Probably, I saw a guide. But to transition from one landscape to another is *massive culture shock.* The community has a habit of being toxic so asking for help felt pointless (since they aren't wizards). This actually isn't about Windows. This is more about UX and accessibility. The number of steps and non-intuitive thinking that one needs to do to get to a desired result. This is even more important when the desired terminal goals require extra orthogonal goals. Unless all you want to do is working OOB in the distro itself(like browsing or stuff you can just rely on the browser for) Linux in general has a much worse UX and too many and often convoluted steps in between. Every example you gave requires you to have orthogonal knowledge and aren't necessarily a simple Google step away, because you need to know that it exists as an option and then know how to know which option is probably the right one and not some insecure hellhole. There is too much friction.

I had a Windows laptop for work for about nine months. It was a *miserable* experience, and I had no idea what I was doing outside of the browser-nothing was intuitive, nothing was where I expected. Productivity was a nightmare. In other words: I was as lost as a Windows user trying Linux for the first time.

It's like Photoshop people complaining that GIMP is unintuitive. I'm used to GIMP and can't find my way around Photoshop. I'm not saying it has the same functionality, but the equivalent stuff is in different places. I use Ubuntu on an old MacBook btw, and it's super smooth. Also btw: For work, Windows 11 and Edge are ok for me but I wouldn't want that setup at home.

You simply do not understand that not every person is not invested into technology. People do not understand how things work, they just use a tool nothing more. Just because you made linux a part of your identity does not mean people care. I recommend at least 3 months working as tech support to at least understand that people don't know how their computers work and do not care. They want their button here doing stuff nothing more. I had people asking me if the icons will still be there after swapping a monitor and other things that any person even remotely familiar with computers would laugh at. For average person computer is just a tool to do task nothing more, they do not care about it being windows or linux.

I tested the Long Dark on Linux. Like most games, you play first person and can occasionally use the mouse to access UI. But on Linux, the mouse isn't locked to the center. So when you open the UI, the mouse can be in any random position on the screen whereas on windows, it always appears in the center. That by itself made it unplayable for me. Maybe I could bug this small indie studio to give af about Linux. Maybe there's some magic package I could install to fix it. But FUCK THAT. Maybe I just want to play a game and don't want to deduce how to solve this problem. And this is ONE GAME. How many others will have a problem? All it takes is one small problem like that and the game is ruined

there is no nobility in the OS one decides to run, i'll die on that hill. at the end of the day your OS is a tool to get the job done. I'll say this, i've sat in hundreds upon hundreds of IRC, Teamspleak, Discord etc servers in the last 30 some odd years, been part of plenty of forums, and newsgroups.. and no body, and i mean no body redicules more people for their OS choice than linux users. sure mac and windows may have a go at each other from time to time, the amount of vitriol and memes and just distaste for windows and its userbase is far more prevelant than the linux camp. if you want to talk vocal minority its the linux users. ive been using linux since it first dropped oh so many years ago now I love how far linux has come.. still has a long way to go for sure, but its getting there.

Few years is nothing. How often do you even think about changing your os? Unless you're enthusiast, basicly never. Maybe every few years when you change your hardware. No regular user that just wants shit to work is even going to check if linux makes sense. If it was shit back in 2019, it's no wonder it still didn't pick up. And is it really good? Isn't it still running the winx, or whatever the windows subsystem for linux was called? Doesn't that basicly mean you get yourself a linux just so you can run a mini windows underneath that ? I really like linux for work. I would never daily drive it. Grub likes to randomly just brick for no good reason, the support it's getting from both driver and game makers is scraps compared to windows and in order to make a switch with all of the data backuping etc I'd need to do with windows, there'd need to be a really damn good reason to do so. There's just not. Yeah some things in windows are shit, but they just work, out of the box, no maintanance, no matter how shit of a pc user you are and how much of shady software you just click run on, it just works.

Saying that Linux is somehow more complicated than Windows is complete and utter bullshit. For the average Joe there is a DE, and you can use Linux perfectly without ever opening a terminal, the experience is exactly the same or better as under Windows. But if you have any problem with something not working - on Linux you have a fighting chance even if you are a rookie, on Windows you are usually fucked up.

@yramagicman675 yeah, I have two GTX1080tis, 4 (lately using 3) displays and a VR headset. It seems that the GPU that displays grub is happy and the one that doesn't is sad - VR headset won't connect through it and Wayland looks like a memdump. That you can mouse over. Yes, it's cursed. And it works fine on windows, until it doesn't. Gee, I'm sorry for hoping that linux would work properly with, wait, let me check my notes... ah yes - using a graphics output/processing device as... well, a graphics output/processing device. My mistake, forgot that using a device for its intended purpose is so last decade. @@TheDZHEX Yeah, unfortunately you might be out of luck. The 1080 predates nvidia truly supporting Linux by 2 or 3 generations. At that point Linux was a second class citizen. Wayland will probably never work on that GPU with proprietary drivers, and probably also not with the unfortunate open source replacement either. This was a choice by the Wayland team, I think because of the trouble nvidia has given Linux in the past. It's only been within the past 2 years that Wayland and nvidia have played nice at all. You are completely reasonable for expecting your GPU to do normal GPU things. Unfortunately, using desktop Linux has meant getting the scraps off the floor of the programming office for a while, and we're only now starting to see first class effort put into the Linux desktop from "traditional" tech like nvidia and AMD. (To give credit where it's due, AMD has been more cooperative with Linux than nvidia for a long time now.)

I think people on both sides of this argument are pretty damnn arrogant and ignorant and refuse to understand each other or where they're coming from. A Linux user of 10 years is going to understand a lot more about Linux than a Windows user of 10 years and vice versa. Saying you can't grasp the issues certain users are having with the tools you use daily, just means you've grown accustomed to them and may no longer be able to see those same issues, but a fresh pair of eyes will make them blatantly clear to you. That's why feedback is so important, even the seemingly useless feedback that may infuriate you. A lot of the time, they will point towards key failure points within certain designs. So, don't be arrogant, and don't be ignorant. When people consistently complain about something or have trouble with certain systems, there are obviously issues with how it's been designed. Even if you fail to see them.

Told them that if they are that scared, create a admin account and never log into it, but only use its password to install or uninstall apps and nothing more, and main the regular user account without sudo privs. Use a GUI shop like synaptic or similar. Its that simple. Its exactly how Windows users treat Windows when installing stuff. Treat the admin account solely as a UAC prompt.

Remember that people are so weeded to "It just works" they're willing to use Android, Windows, i/MacOS. So to get the 99% to move across I've been recommending either Immutable or Atomic distributions, that way there's nothing to break and if somehow they did the self-help is to go into recovery and do the rollback

On the other hand, I am firmly in the camp of “your os doesn’t matter.” Yeah, I use wine and proton to play games like everyone else. But I don’t think it is the end all be all. My issue is that most windows developers probably outnumber linux developers 10 to 1 if that. While yes, probably a larger group of Linux users are programmers as we tend to like to experiment and have fun; it does not mean we really are influential in challenging the microsoft monopoly. I hate to say it, but Apple has more a chance there. I at least understand Windows developers in particular tend to be fairly accustomed to their own unique uh, ‘bullshit’ compared to Unix users. Windows is the odd one out and generally only some skills are transferable to Linux. Plus, it is possible Windows 12 might be many the last huff of copium of “It will good this time, promise!”
