Love how you premised this all with a "I will never read this book, but also never say never" haha that's so relatable, honestly! For some reason I love hearing someone say how they didn't enjoy a book that a lot of people are loving because I feel like it almost validates my freedom to also not like it, if that makes sense. Somehow it feels safer going into books with a "some love it some feel meh about it".

Catcher in the Rye & The Great Gatsby were such a waste of my life 😂 we had the chance to pick a book in English class to read in small groups and I was outvoted so we read Catcher in the Rye-all three of us hated-and then we had to write monologues and present them to the class and the bitterness my teenage self was filled with during my presentation was high 😂

I love Catcher in the Rye. I read it in high school and didn't get it. I thought Holden was spoiled and whiny. Then I read it as an adult, and saw it in a whole new light. I now see Holden as a young man really struggling with depression and the loss of his brother. I recognize the guilt he feels for not being the one who died. He has no emotional bond with anyone except his little sister, and she's a child who can't give him the help he needs to overcome his grief, depression, and hopelessness. He has no connection with his parents. No one around him recognizes his deep depression and the danger he and others are in. If Holden had been a teen during this generation in the United States, he would most likely have access to guns and gone down the path of committing a horrible crime. That book reflects how society ignores boys/young men suffering from depression and grief. I also love The Great Gatsby. Again, there is so much being said about society, class, and depression. I hate Outlander. With a passionate hate. I am still angry about my wasted time reading the first book. It was the first book I actually wanted to rip up and throw away. Assault is not something I find erotic at all. Plus, the author made so many errors that I am amazed the editor didn't catch it. I mean a WWll front line nurse who then doesn't recognize blood on a doorstep and needs her all knowing hubby to mansplain that what they see is blood? Give me a damn break. I will never read Lolita or Lord of the Flies.

I loved The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes- not because it was fun to read but because I think she really hit the nail on the head with the reason why Snow turned out so horrible. I read many reviews that said it showed that Snow was just evil to begin with but it felt more like he was extremely privileged and felt pressure to maintain that. So much so that whenever he had a choice to do the right thing, he himself didn‘t believe he did (if that makes any sense). I feel like so many people these days have the same tendencies so I found that extremely interesting.

My answers off the top of my head: 1. Popular book no interest in reading - the Malazan series. Is that popular enough? Oooh, the Poppy War is one. 2. Classic I'll never read - War and Peace, or Doctor zhivago 3. Author I have no interest in - CC & SJM, I tried a small % of ACOTAR & Throne of Glass, and City of Bones, but knew very quickly neither author was for me! Oh and Holly Black too. 4. Author I've read a couple books of that's not for me - Neil Gaiman, now i LOVE his narrating and so have listened to a few of his books (Coraline, Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book, & Norse Mythology), but his style/genre is not really for me. However there is one exception so far- I listened to the Ocean at the end of the Lane this month and LOVED that one.... ! I may reread the others to see if I feel any differently, maybe my tastes are evolving! 5. Genre I've tried but not for me - Neither of these I've really PROPERLY tried but I think it would be horror (except classic gothic horror like Dracula, and Frankenstein, both of which I DO like), and Romance. 6. Book I bought but will never read - Game of Thrones 7. Series I DNF'd - Dresden Files, Eragon, An Ember in the Ashes... 8. New release I have no interest in reading - I'm gonna agree with the Hunger Games one (and all of Twilight haha...) as not that aware of current new releases either; so far I've only read book 1 of the original Hunger Games and loved it so will be reading the other two but I know I will have no interest in the new one. I loved Rebecca!!

My #4 is the same, only for me it’s that I can’t stand his narration. There is something patronising in his prose and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I also share #6.
@chocoholizzie4 жыл бұрын
@@druidinary Interesting! Do you mean you find the prose patronising, or his narration? If you mean his narration, I think I know what you mean, because he reads very much like he's reading a story to children. But I really like that, it feels cosy and it really helps me feel ok about the darkness in the story. With regards to his prose, it's usually in third person omniscient, right? (I don't generally get on with omniscient, fairy-tale style writing.) Come to think of it though, Ocean is first person, so maybe that made all the difference to me compared to his others!

if you ever change about trying Daphne Du Maurier, you could give her short stories a shot. They gave me similar vibes to Shirley Jackson's short stories. It's so strange how you felt the pacing was wrong, I always find her writing wonderful and take time, in the beginning, to just appreciate every sentence, and then find myself too wrapped up in the story and speeding through the rest. This happened with both Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel, less so Jamaica Inn. It's interesting how differently various readers can respond to the same book hey!?

Outrageous opinions‼️ 😊 I’ve read & mostly enjoyed the Outlander series back in the day. Sadly, I’m sure I read right over the portrayal of gay men, in particular, at the time. But I think learning about Scotland’s history was what I liked the most. Even if not exactly history, it really peaked my interest in the desolation of the Highland clans and the migration of prisoners & families to the US in the wake of it. Absolutely not trying to convince anyone to read it, but wanted to acknowledge that it did help me think about that time period & the peoples of the Scottish Highlands. So, I tend to see the series through that lens.

I'd say mine would be... 1. 50 Shades of Grey - I read up to about chapter 10 and then gave it away. 2. Hmm... I'm not sure I'd write off any classics as potential reads. 3. I agree with you here regarding Sarah J. Maas. I read a bit of Court of Thorns and Roses and just really disliked it. I have zero interest to read her novels. Sorry! 4. I can't think of any author I've read more than one book of that I didn't really enjoy, so I think I'd probably be willing to read one more book by this author to see if I meshed with them better (and the books are short). Anyways, the author would be Muriel Spark, which is probably the author I feel most guilty about not reading/enjoying. I feel like I ought to give more of her books a try given how important they are here in Scotland and my husband does love her books. I read Miss Jean Brodie and just felt... meh. If you have a suggestion for which book of hers I should give a try, do let me know! 5. Probably Romance, but then again, I do enjoy a good Gothic Romance. I don't necessarily dislike the majority of Romance books, it just isn't a genre I gravitate towards (again, unless it is Gothic). 6. Hm... I genuinely can't think of one. I know there will be some that I've already unhauled, but I can't think of something currently on my shelves that I want to get rid of. 7. Outlander.... I read the first book and did enjoy it, but I just have no interest to continue reading the series (plus the books are absolutely massive - I'd much rather read other things). 8. 100% Ickabog. I will not support Rowling and have no interest in buying any book from her. I have all my HP series from when I was little or re-purchased from charity shops. I would like to get the illustrated editions for my kids one day (again, secondhand or not at all) but have no interest in ever ever buying/reading Ickabog. Your comment about Midnight Sun made me chuckle. I have an MLitt in Gothic and we discussed Twilight (both the books and films) in our seminars. I must admit that I went from loving it when I was a teen to sort of hating it (as everyone turned on it and I got a bit bullied for liking it) and then back to liking it after having studied it. And yes, I own Midnight Sun and do hope to read it - a guilty Gothic pleasure haha. Then again, I'm mostly excited about re-reading because this girl LOVES a vampire and I'm intrigued to see how that is fleshed out.

Have you tried Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson, Anne Bishop's the Others series? These are 3 of the very best urban fantasy series I have read. I love the genre & used to read it most of the time but many of the books have not stood up to rereadings etc. These 3 series are many classes above, the writers are brilliant & the characters have me in tears even in rereads (I rarely cry in books, unlike tv). Trying to say the characters are exceptionally well written, all the others too not just the main. I know what you're saying, I don't read several genres at all ever, but I just thought with you loving fantasy & these 3 series in particular being so superior you might enjoy :)

Saw the first season of the outlander. other than a slightly interesting take on mystical time travel and a decent cast doing the best they could, it was just a generic costume drama that got worse quickly. And if that is anything to judge the books by, I'd doubt they are worth reading. I think a lot of Warhammer 40k novels would be far more interesing reading, especially for people who enjoy books with deeper and more progressive philosophical and social commentary tangents than one would expect from a science fantasy game based fiction with an occationally toxic online fanbase. Two of the best authors in the franchise is Aaron Dembski Bowden and the pseudonym Sandy Mitchell. Availiable on audible so it's easy to get a refund if it's not to taste.

But Midnight Sun was garbage. I was so salty I wasted the money. 😒

I think it's a good idea to stay away from Outlander. I tried reading it a couple of years ago, got a couple of hundreds of pages in and it was awful for a lot of reasons. Some of the biggest that keep me from ever thinking about going back to it to give it another chance are just how much attempted sexual assault there was and also the homophobia. Like 200-300 pages in there were 3, maybe even 4, moments where the main character almost got r*p*d and you find out the main antagonist is horribly cruel and violent to people and regularly sexually assaults women because causing them pain and making them terrified is the only way he can get off with them because he's actually gay and hiding it. This is also the only gay character up to that point in the book.

I've only watched the TV series, but there's later on a positive gay character who is an important ally - he actually has his own spin off series in the books. As I understand it, there's dark stuff but it's not portrayed as correct - it's portrayed as our human history, which can be harsh.
