It seemed to me that Intel's first wave of GPUs are doing well, all things considered. I'm sure that updates to this generation and their subsequent series' will only improve performance. Nvidia and AMD have been in the GPU game for many years. So I feel we should give props to Intel for jumping in so late while performing somewhat decently with their first generation. Also, having a third competitor in the GPU market could help yield more innovation via competition. Let's see how Intel does. I hope they do well - for our benefit, not just theirs. Decent first try, Intel, but you've also got a long journey ahead. Chin up, boys and gals! 👍

Been on Arc, myself, for a while. The performance improvements have been pretty damn big. I bought mine when, where I am, it was priced so far lower than the closest Nvidia had to offer and my 1080 had died. It's a great entry to gaming, in my opinion. Hoping the future drivers iron out more kinks and that Battlemage cards continue the trend of steady improvement.

The reason why the Intel card got a lower FPS in Minecraft is (probably) because you're hosting the world. Doesn't make a lot of sense, but whenever I play in single player, I get 80-100 fps, and in multiplayer servers I get 150-200 FPS. CPU usage is always at 20%.
@chao807

If CPU usage is only at 20%, something else is probably getting maxed out. Minecraft hosting requires that you dedicate RAM for just the server. So you could be running out of that ~
@ErrorNoInternet

By hosting I mean running a single player world (single player is still a server, but no console) Opening to LAN just allows other people to join your server (that's why opening to LAN is just a click of a button, and doesn't require you to re-join your world, etc) My RAM usage is 4 out of 16 GB when I'm in single player tho

One thing that comes to mind is that your render distance could be higher in singleplayer. Servers default to 10 (previously 8, i think). What was happening on the stream is obviously the CPU maxing out, though.

I wish benchmarking Minecraft was more commonplace. It can be very demanding on your CPU to run a server with a huge amount of entities/players/redstone contraptions and there are some shaders, like the SEUS ones, that can absolutely wreck your GPU if configured properly. Running Minecraft can mean a whole host of things and is not something to take for granted. It’s also massively popular, I really don’t understand the neglect.

@@AbyNeon You can't be sure of that, back in the 90's I had a few graphics cards for no other reason than to evaluate their architecture based efficiency within a specific set or type of 3D CAD calls. The different ways they approached the execution of the call within the simulated space and the relative efficiency of different methods was what I was curious about. Hundreds of hours spent analyzing different methods VS each other using different fixed parameter "tick speed" to simulate computational cost as it were between different approaches in the direction of a solution. This is a very long way of me saying "I don't agree - there is some problem that Arc is currently the best scalpel to dissect, I just don't know yet what it is :-)"
@noth606
@noth606 2 жыл бұрын
@@AbyNeon I do see advantages with how Arc does things in particular when it comes to analyzing the relative 'cost' of one approach compared with another, in terms of compute resources used. And yes it does matter, a lot actually, even to those who haven't the faintest clue what I'm talking about. To try to elucidate what I mean a bit more in a general sense, every kind of computational analysis science ends up needing it's own language or at the very least terminology and set of agreed upon concepts, problem types, and solution types. These over time evolve to be more and more exact and efficient in their function, be it to define a problem, define a solution, build the road from one to the other, or in some cases demonstrate or prove something new, like what was defined as a problem not actually being one at all but rather a convoluted solution in search of a fitting problem.

Thank you for getting around to GTA V, I know it's a pain in the rear to benchmark properly. Ars Technica tried it at 4K Max and could barely get 20fps from either Intel card (8GB or 16GB) and their 3060 was in the 40s. Seems like at 1080p and high/very high settings the A770 falls in between my current GTX970 (mid 50s) and the GTX 1080 my step son is giving me soon (mid 70s). The stuttering was likely from hitting the engine's breaking point. No need to spend $329 for an Arc GPU here in my house then. When the 1080 renders its last rend, there are plenty of other $125-$200 used cards. I could probably get away with as little as a 6GB 1060 at this point, and would likely settle on a pile of 1070/1070ti's to last me until death. Of the game of course, I plan to live forever, so far, so good.

It's new and not a ton of videos are 8k. But it's an option for people who want to buy it. 4k is waaaay too commonplace nowadays to lock it behind a paywall. Especially for a gaming audience.

As a video encoding engineer: No. That's not the case at all. AV1 is a great standard but thinking this will be a non-issue after it's mainstream is a comically bad take. Everybody outside the video coding field all thought the same things about HEVC but what you saw on the ground is companies working moderately hard just to get the same compression ratio at a given PSNR as AVC. It's not because it lacks the tooling, it has it, but using all these features of the new specs, especially in hardware accelerated GPU's where you can only support a certain features and supporting them well enough that you're still working in real time while increasing your compression ratio? Not an easy nut to crack. AVC has had a decade+ to get the shit optimized out of it. It's easy to say that these new standards like AV1 are going to revolutionize the industry when you have a clip cherry picked for the test running in an AV1 reference encoder with all the bells cranking away at 1 frame per 10 seconds, it's another thing entirely when you need to have to try and stuff all of those new tools into a fixed function GPU pipeline. AV1 will have moderate improvements over VP9 - probably practically larger than the gap between VP8 and VP9. But the idea that CDN costs aren't an issue after it's rolled out? No, not a chance. CDN's are stupid expensive to run and the gap between VP9 and AV1 is not even a hint at lowering that. The truth of the matter is that we've made BY FAR the largest gaps in lossy compression technology with MPEG2 & AVC. Everything since then has been super incremental in comparison, and most of the foundation of what we do today boils down to optimizations on the same techniques - the main benefit is more flexible blocking for retaining small details in large frames. But the underlying technology hasn't changed much. The other benefit has been better segmentation for multiple fixed function pipelines on the same GPU. The benefit is for speed though, not compression. As for 4k being "way too common" - you summarized it best in the same line: "Especially for a gaming audience." The gaming audience for YT is a tiny percentage of consumption. There is no need to add it just to satisfy them. If they want it bad enough they'll pay for YT Red. And even among the gaming audience, I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of them didn't even select 4k manually, and just left it on whatever YT gave them. I'm not a gamer but the only time I check the quality at the bottom is if it looks like shit. After I was part of the team who rolled out one of the standards above on the 1st cards who supported them for one of the companies in the video, I worked at a start-up. The start-up didn't make video cards like my previous job, but we did still work in the video space & we had a small CDN for distributing video. The start-up failed, but with only a few hundred users the CDN costs for 4k video were astronomical. The cloud services charge a shit-ton for those transfers, they are *expensive*. It really did not take long before we were dropping tens of thousands on CDN costs per month. You kinda have to see the GCloud or AWS billing to appreciate how hard it sucks. Now granted, Google gets a great deal on this, but the prices aren't high for the rest of us because of price fixing, they're high because it's expensive for them too. Anyway, sorry for the long winded reply. Linus is right though, this makes sense, 4k and 8k are expensive as fuck for Google, and 97% of KZbin viewers likely will never notice. AV1 will be a drop in the bucket for costs for YT.
@Bry.89
@Bry.89 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSlowestD16 Nah its fine. Google isn't hurting for money, no need to gouge the consumer further. They literally have every possible data point about their customers up for sale. As for AV1, I don't think it's going to take that long to become decent. KZbin already uses it by default on some videos, and you can go into your account and ask it to prefer AV1 when available. And the quality remains the same while the bandwidth has reduced by like 40%. Also, the gaming audience for KZbin is actually their largest viewership next to music. Just because you don't watch gaming videos, doesn't mean it isn't popular. It's literally one of the primary reasons for their growth over the last few years. Don't make shit up.
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bry.89 They're not hurting for money, but they have to justify it as a business decision. They're not a charity. They have to explain to their share holders why they make decisions. There needs to be a clear-cut reason they can relay to them. You misunderstood everything I wrote about AV1. It has nothing to do with "becoming decent" or "already in use" - you are NOT getting the same quality with a 40% reduction in bandwidth between VP9 and AV1. That's a cute promotional slogan but it's simply not true in normal test cases. The same claims were made about VP9 when it was new and it didn't deliver even a fraction of that, and the same claims were made about HEVC and it was the same deal. AV1 doesn't offer any groundbreaking technologies, it's an incremental improvement. The standard simply isn't that revolutionary. If you're getting a 40% reduction I can guarantee you there's a lower PSNR to go with it. I've been working in the encoder/decoder development space for over a decade, I'm not making shit up here, lol. But claiming 40% improvements in general use-cases is pure fantasy, I promise you this. If the gaming audience is as big as you claim (and I don't think it is, but let's say you're right for a second), and they all really do require 4k, as you claim, then that's all the more reason as Google as a company to make this change. Those CDN costs are astronomical, that's a huge expenditure. They're very likely not (or barely) breaking even on that alone. The YT Premium is a great place for them to make that up as a business sense. Gotta get it out of your head that YT is a charity and realize how many hours of content they serve and how expensive that is.

Intel GPUs should be perfect for non gamer professionals who can't exactly afford the Quadros or the 40 series of the world. (The % of CAD designers throughout the world who actually use "professional" GPUs is very low). A lot of CAD programs still rely significantly on CPUs anyway. If Intel solves the reliability on those applications then they can build up on top of that for revenue to develop next gen cards.

The creases on Geralt clothes didn't have any shadow but on intel, it is nicely shaded. I'm not sure if Hairworks with 64x tessellation are viable on Ampere cards seeing it's much more of compute oriented architecture (Kepler has a bit of advantage in that and it was a point to bash AMD GCN cards that were bad in tessellation). Maybe nvidia driver default cap it to lower amount that overrides game settings so probably worth forcing max tessellation value with nvidia inspector.

Some source titles may be run with OGL by just using a paramater `-gl`. Another thing is ReBAR. Currently there are people that still uses hardware that does not support that feature. Should we even consider buying ARC? I'm really dissapointed by the attitude of AMD and NVIDIA so I wanted to "vote with my wallet" but should I still even consider Intel GPU without ReBAR capability?

Fallout 4 has a similar issue resulting in lock picking becoming impossible at high FPS. Disappointed that they never tried star citizen, even though Linus promised it. It would have been interesting to see if the Arc would have been able to handle it, seeing that Star Citizen is running on one of the most advanced constantly updating engines that exists in gaming right now. The Arc excels in new engines vs old engines, so this would have been an interesting test to run, and though they played many games, they never hit the Star Citizen genre, as it is a category all its own, and very important to the kind of people who are likely to buy an Arc GPU to test and troubleshoot with it to try and get a new line of products off the ground like this, as Linus begged people to do in his previous video. The kind of people who would buy an Arc GPU for that purpose are exactly the kind of people who play Star Citizen, in its current state. With respect, it is not likely someone who is concerned about maximum frames in Rocket League so that they can perform their E-sports best is going to be interested in testing and troubleshooting a new video card lineup with the vague hope that it can become something good in the future, and thus is unlikely to be considering an Arc GPU in the first place...

It bother me they didn’t use the monitors as constant variables rather than using two completely different monitors but I digress..

This behaviour of different Gamma directives seems to be a difference of just Vulkan vs DirectX. I have the exact same behaviour on an Nvidia GPU launching games on Windows and comparing them launched on Linux.

Saturation may be set a bit off into higher value, if not, please do inspect whats up with that, cause if that thing need supports, that's a good way to measure the difference and find what's what and how to fix it... As always, the community rules!

I want to try using Arc inside threadripper or Epyc system. So that we can have the best of video decoding, and EPYC's threading.

The way Linus explains the 4K-paywall-thingy absolutely makes sense. Now I don't know anything about the matter and I don't care too much but from what he's saying I think it's the creators who should pay for 4K uploads, not the viewers who want to watch in 4K. After all, the creators use youtube to make money so they should be the ones paying. Just like vimeo makes the uploader pay for premium, not the viewer.

Aha, this sounds way to much like old broadcasting platforms. Oh, you want to watch in HD? Pay more!

@@BruceKarrde I'm not saying "wanna watch 4K? pay more!" I'm saying "wanna provide your audience 4K? pay more!" Huge difference.

Great stream. Watched most of it live. It would be nice if they posted a video with all the other games that were not played using the same set-up.

Regarding the 4K debate: I don't really select 4K on my own. I consume on my 4K TV and I would hope that picks 4K automatically. As for viewing on my phone, if KZbin auto-adjusts the video to be compressed shit at 144p, I'll go into advanced settings and select whatever the highest picture quality is available for the video. None of this will ultimately matter in my case since I have paid for premium for over 2 years so far.

1:48:00 I have never seen anyone else have that issue, but I had it in cod once, when Riley moves his mouse the frames drop, when I had it in cod it turned out to be some sort of razer software issue with the mice

I'd wanted to see Transistor, like even though that should in theory be a really easy game to run, but I missed the stream. Still frustrated about that. He might not have played it even if I did suggest it but I'd have still liked the chance. At least there's like one game on here that I do play, and another I find fun to watch.

Does anybody else notice Linus bossiness? He told Dan not to talk because he doesn't have a mic but when jake does it, he doesn't mind and engage in conversation without having any concern for Jake's voice isn't audible. Strange 🤔

I believe the thing with gamma wasnt a gamma issue. the default nvidia color depth is limited 15-235 which look washed out on TVs but correct on monitors. I believe the default for arc is Full 0-255 which looks correct on tv but too dark on monitors. if you tweak your monitor after you set it to full it will look nice.

I mean it's not great but it's a lot better than I expected for a first gen product from a company that never did a gaming GPU (and therefore doesn't have more than a decade worth of work behind the drivers). I do, however, take issue with the fact that the pricing isn't as competitive as they were promising it would be. Going off of my local pricing, the Arc actually isn't competitive at all.

It would be really interesting to see this card preforming in a steam os or other linux distro. Basically we don't have a direct x or whats ever, so it would be nice to see how this thing performs.
