Simon is like the proverbial absent-minded professor who can tackle the most complicated puzzles with ease but struggles with the easy ones. A few days ago he did that enormous fog puzzle where the rules were a wall of text, and he had no problem remembering them all. And then this straightforward rule set has him stumped. I love it :-)

That enormous fog of war puzzle is actually quite easy. The reason the video was long on that one is simply that each step takes a whole new turn in logic. It is a brilliant puzzle. This one in the video is arguable harder until you figure out the first few digits. Then it becomes a breeze, if only one can remember the one rule.

At 35:00 it is utterly amazing how many places the anti-5 rule can do something: It forces R9C2 to be a 3 because it is next to the 1 in R9C3 It forces R3C1 to be a 6; if it were a 3, R8C1 would be 4, putting a 2 in R4C1 next to the 3 in R3C1 It forces R8C7 to be a 5 because it is next to the 2 in R7C8 If forces (with a tiny bit of sudoku) R8C9 to be a 3 because it is next to the 1 in R7C9 and there is now a 9 in R8C7 (since *that* can no longer be 5)

A very nice puzzle - I always like German Whispers puzzles, and even the unrememberable rule is quite fun and a good twist. But Simon, my friend, how could you reverse blue and orange? When I saw you color in the lines with blue and orange I thought to myself, "If he discovers that the blue are high and the orange are low he will switch them before he goes further." Did you do that? NO! So I could absolutely not concentrate at all! I had no idea, truly, that my brain had been so well-trained by you and Mark with regard to high and low coloring! Seriously, though, this was a fun video - thank you! (But next time, that blue and orange thing ...) 🤣

There was a beautiful and simple elegance to this puzzle. I don’t like it as much when puzzles have a clever break in but then towards the end become very nitty-gritty and you need to chip away at the logic to complete the puzzle. This one has the beautiful central idea and then the rest of the puzzle just flows from it when you figure it out.

That was one where I got completely stuck, thought "I'll have to watch the video" but by the time Simon had got to where I was stuck he inspired me! I'd got the one "extreme" digit outside the central box, and then got the others by a less elegant approach ("one of them has to be the next digit (3 or 7) which has to have 8/9 or 1/2, which means it has to be the one that forms a pair with 1/9. And so on. After that break in it's pretty easy but surprising how often you need the no-5 rule. Very neat puzzle indeed.

28:30 I was thinking, where do we go from here? I am sure there are other things one could do at this point but i for one started thinking about the unrememberable rule that everyone seems to forget. If only they had remembered to give their "remeberall" ball a squeeze (red smokey ball from Harry Potter) they might have not forgotten. The corner marked 1's in box one is interesting in terms of where does 4 go in that box. There's a 4 in row one. There's a 4 in row three. The 4 is reduced to one of two places in box one, R2C2 and R2C3. Now bare with me while i explain why it's not in R2C2! In box 7 there also needs to be a 4. It's not in row 7 due to the placed 4 in that row. It's not next to a 1. Therefore there's a 4 in column 1 or 2. Which lines up with the 2-4 pair in box four, eliminating a 4 from R2C2! Furthermore, 4 cannot go in the middle of a green line that only occupies box seven. It would require two nines on that green line. And you also only have one place for the 1 digit in box nine.

It's funny that he calls this approachable compared to yesterday's. Yesterday's miracle movie puzzle took me so long, but I made steady progress the whole way. It's just that the nature of the rules made it take forever. This one is simple, but I've been staring at it for 10 minutes, coloring things, and I can't see how to break in at all. I'm probably missing something simple, but sometimes puzzles like this are way harder than the long ones, because if you can't see the break in trick, you're just stuck.

Bah, it took me the hint around 19:40 to solve this. I was making progress but just couldn't do it until Simon pointed out that one clue. Wow, that was a good puzzle. Thanks!

Thanks Zetamath! I particularly enjoyed the break-in. I suspected early on that it was going to involve ruling out a particular domino, but it took a bit of hunting to find the right one.

I was slowly but surely inching my way forward, until I broke the puzzle when a 4 was forced next to a 1. I originally thought that the no-sum-to-five rule was there to resolve high-low on the lines. But then I found I could place other digits based on the rule. Until I encountered my first application of the rule, I used letters instead of numbers. The letter corresponded to its place in the alphabet, or 10 minus its place. For example, A = 1 or 9 and I = 1 or 9 as well. Then a BC domino resolved the digits. 17:20 That's how I placed my first digit, an F. The neighboring digits along the line were therefore A. 24:00 Once he reached the cell (R6C1) that broke the puzzle with a 4, and he ruled out the 4, I somehow managed to fiddle a few cells and get back on track. I finally solved it, hopefully. 33:20 I'm muttering over the 34 cell next to the 1 down at the bottom.

I’ve always loved the song you did in the intro - for the first section, there needs to be more emphasis on the lower of the two notes and less on the higher - you did good with it when the notes changed though, you can also be more loose with the Melody rhythm but that can be really tricky when you have the straight rhythm supporting Can’t wait until your next bit of guitar! You have such a sweet tone and I can feel the care you put into portraying the emotions of the pieces you choose

13:44, but it took me 3 tries because I kept mucking up number placements somewhere along the line. Otherwise, very approachable and I like how much the anti-5 sum domino rule helps to place the lower 4 numbers

After the two monstrous puzzles last couple of days.. this was a welcome relief.. my solve path differed from simon becoz ... I did remember the rule !!! Also i used letters along with hi-lo coloring on most of the green lines before i found the break-in, so my puzzle unwound a lot faster

20:30 loved this puzzle. I'm a suckered for maths puzzles. Even though it was basically just no 4s next to 1s and no 2s next to 3s. But coloring was very helpful (always do on green lines unless other rules make coloring a different pattern more optimal.) All these complex puzzles lately, finally an easy, but thought inducing puzzle. Say one notch more challenging than approachable. Need to think of a good term for it.

It was rather like setting up dominoes - you spend ages putting them in place and then you remove the really obvious thing you overlooked and the whole lot falls over. Cheers, zeta, that was great fun!

00:28:25 - 14% Faster than Simon, a UNICORN! Usually I am 100-200% slower than the professionals, but this was a rare puzzle I excelled at. I saved a lot of time bifurcating by using center marks to show the spiral with highs in one spot and lows in the other and the corner marks to show the opposite and work out what they must be then once I find something that breaks one or the other delete the bad configuration. It seems that technique is considered bad form by the professionals, but I'm not good enough to forgo it. I quickly Identified R7C5 had to be either 4 or 6 and did my bifurcated spiral from there. As I worked out the threads of both options in tandem I discovered putting a 6 in R7C5 would force a 4 and a 1 to be adjacent, which is against the rules so I quickly unwound the spiral into the correct high low pattern and the spiraled out into the rest of the puzzle. It unwound beautifully. I loved this puzzle.

omg this one took me an hour to find the breakin... In that time I found all kinds of interesting relationships but couldn't fathom how to turn them into a digit or how to resolve the polarity. But I persisted and found it! Once I did, the rest of the solve took only 15 minutes and I never forgot the unrememberable rule haha - tho I almost missed it at the end, I thought I had 2 valid solutions (the app said they were both valid but of course it wasn't checking the 5 rule) until I saw a 2-3 that I'd missed. Missing is not the same as not remembering. 😉 Now I'll watch the video and lament how much faster he'll find the breakin haha
