That feeling when you realize the gear you want is basically just a subset of the gear you already have. Sometimes instead of buying more gear, people just need to turn off some features for the gear they've got.
@IvarTryti3 жыл бұрын
Hehe, that's been the case so far with my slight GAS for the DFAM, Boog, and Minibrute 2s. I'll never get a 1:1 sound or workflow, but I've gotten close enough to save me some $ :D
@ToyKeeper3 жыл бұрын
The DFAM sounds great, but it could really use a deeper sequencer. At minimum, 16 steps for one bar of 16th notes, plus another 16 steps to use with a "fill" button. That would make it a lot more practical and versatile. OTOH, other gear can get really close to that... like, you could do it on the A4. Or I could set up a couple parallel clips on my Force, assign some macro knobs, and use the crossfader as a "fill" button. And I could even set up multiple scenes to get more progression through rhythms and melodies. ... and thus GAS turns into inspiration. New gear is great for ideas, even without buying anything.

This is great but the DFAM is a very different beast and does things in a creative and highly "HOW DID THAT FUCKING HAPPEN? ITS AWESOME!" kind of way that you tend to not get with the A4 without a lot of planning :) Basically DFAM is the master of techno & IDM "happy accidents"

Hey Ivar, this was as always a real pleasure to the ears and the eyes! I kinda missed the gritty saturation of the Heat though - what‘s the reason you’re not using it here if you don’t mind me asking?
@lying-dalai3 жыл бұрын
I think there’s enough grit in this track, the Mello-Fi (still free on Arturia website) is well used here IMO.
@IvarTryti3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Andi! The Heat sounds amazing, but it has been a bit inconvenient for my current setup. I put away my gear when not in use, so every time I use the Heat it means I have more stuff to set up. If I closed FL Studio while using the Heat as an audio interface, and I open in the next day using my Digitakt only, FL Studio gives me annoying popup messages saying it can't find the Heat. And vice versa; if I'm working on a track and I want to add the Heat, I have to go into FL and change the audio interface. The Heat also outputs very low volume over USB, so I have to add a 25dB boost when using the Heat. It's not a huge problem, but it does add an extra step every time I switch between the Heat and Digitakt/Digitone as an audio interface. I've tried using the Digitakt as an audio interface and the Heat's overbridge plugin, but it introduces a LOT of latency. For example, if the Digitakt is connected to the Heat's input, and I run a soft synth through the Heat overbridge plugin, the timing between the digitakt and the soft synth is way off. Fixing this with latency compensation makes it harder to perform live, because everything will have that added latency. I've also tried making a permanent place for the Heat on my desk so that I always use it. It turned out that I had a better time replacing the Heat with the Digitakt for three reasons: a) 8 midi tracks to control FL Studio with, b) always being able to sample the stuff I'm working on when using other hardware, and c) built in compressor that works on incoming audio. It doesn't color the signal like the Heat does, but I've been using a few saturation plugins that are similar enough to the Heat's Saturation and Enhancement plugins for me. And finally, there's a lot of money tied up in the Heat, and I have a dying PC in need of replacement. All that said, the Heat would have suited me much better if I had a studio and could leave all my gear plugged in and have them all propped up ergonomically. With the current situation where I only have a small desk that I use both for work, music, and games, there's too much extra work to include the Heat when setting up my music gear.
@IvarTryti3 жыл бұрын
@@lying-dalai Thank you! I had to tame the low end a bit on the A4 to prevent Mello-Fi's overdrive from turning muddy, hehe. I also really enjoy what a bit of the wear knob does to the high frequencies.
@andigoldberger52443 жыл бұрын
@@IvarTryti Wow, thanks for taking the time to write this thorough reply! I can relate with both a small desk and a small budget, haha. Still - for my taste, your beats got even better after you got the Heat. It even made me check out the used market for Heats, even though I could and still can absolutely not justify spending money on it. So with your Digitakt always on desk - do you use a FL template with more or less the same midi settings for your plugins in FL while jamming? Or do you do that after making the beats? Have a nice evening man :)
@IvarTryti3 жыл бұрын
@@andigoldberger5244 My pleasure, Andi! And thanks :) Yeah, I've made a template in FL Studio where I made a control surface with 8 knobs (to mirror the 8 knobs on the Digitakt), and mapped my most tweaked parameters from all the plugins to those knobs. I also mapped trig 16 to bypass the plugin chain so I can compare it with the dry signal. I have a "level match" knob to so I can match the loudness of the wet and dry signal to avoid tricking myself by making the wet signal louder. Trig 15 bypasses the "level match" knob so I can hear the full volume. These settings are always the same, so I can go from jamming on hardware to opening FL Studio and immediately start applying my favorite mixing/mastering plugins without having to click on the screen or configure anything. Mapping stuff on the fly can take a lot of time. My favorite instrument plugin is a piano, because all I really need is to map the sustain pedal and the volume knob, as opposed to synths where I'd like to control a bunch of stuff like filter cutoff and resonance and envelope etc. I use instrument plugins as little as possible because of this, but I am working on a template now that includes an orchestra plugin and 6 midi outs to control that plugin from the Digitakt. The goal is to be able to select instruments in FL Studio, set to taste and forget, then sequence and mix from the Digitakt. Not sure how this'll go though, I imagine I'm gonna have to start using the piano roll for bigger projects :P

I hear you on not wanting to deal with the analog heat latency or setup, but man would this have been a perfect case for the heat’s compressor like settings and extra crispiness from the saturation circuit. Still sounds awesome, but the heat is noticeably missing, when listening to your newer productions compared to the previous ones that had heat in the signal chain. Just an observation I notice when listening to your productions back to back on quality headphones. Hold on to the heat if you can! :)
@IvarTryti3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, man. I agree, the saturation and enhancement circuits add such a nice texture, especially on softer lead or pad sounds with lots of reverb. I've gotten better at listening to distortion/saturation from using the Heat so much, and I like to think my taste in distortion has been refined too :D. I don't think I'll be able to replicate the Heat's sound, but it has given me a lot of ideas I could try to apply with plugins. Sadly, there was too much money tied up in it, and selling it will help cover the cost of the new laptop I bought a few days ago.

This is the opposite of how I feel. The DFAM sound may not be for you but it is fucking great. But you probably need to compliment it with something like a TR8s or other more traditional drum machine for jams to sound more defined.
