Peter, i love your style. And i am a huge fan of Dan. But yiu explain things so well and in such an enjoyable fashion. What i would like to see you do a video on would be how to do chipping off of different types of turf. For example, I did some of my best chipping in a while on vacation in Arkansas where things are dryer than where I live near Seattle where winters tend to be wet.

I will say, Rick's lesson with Dan Grieve changed my chipping. More spin and consistency. Nice to have a refresher, so thanks.

Agreed…. Big fan of Dan Grieve. Was previously a hinge n holder which is fine provided your timing is A1 ALL of the time. Mere mortals struggle with that so this technique allows far more tolerance for less than perfect timing of the low point in the swing. Also, works better on thicker grass types like Bermuda/kikuyu etc.

This was a very simple lesson. I have been really struggling with chipping and short pitches so I had to go outside and try this. It totally took my right hand jabs out of the equation and my landing distance were spot on. Can’t wait to try it on some tighter lies than my lawn. Thank you. I just subscribed.

Good instructions a la Dan Grieve. The problem with the great many instructors is that most of the time is spent on what you shouldn’t be doing-what the viewer is doing wrong, or what is perceived to be incorrect.

I'm of that generation taught to 'show the makers name' of the glove when chipping. If I'm playing with someone who is struggling, who asks me for help, I tell them to have that thought in their mind. I feel that once you have a more consistent strike and want to improve then the method in the video is fab. But then I still chip with my 8 iron!!

Great video Pete , I’m so confused and baffled at times with chipping and pitching , getting under the ball and weight forward with some shaft lean … that does work out to a certain extent , that does feel good .. but Now theirs this Dan Grieves way of doing things with using the bounce it’s very interesting ,, scientifically 🧐 Im working on this handle moving up and around For a while my swing thought on pitching and chipping There’s a certain rolling of the shoulders and a magical tilt like picking a lock I thought that was the magic formula , that did work out also I’m sure I was hitting the centre of my pitching wedge or 9 iron I use

I started doing this and the feeling for me is letting the club head pass the grip at impact (even though it isn’t). Also to finish with the club face pointing at my left shoulder, grip pointing at belt buckle and stand up tall facing the target.

Good lesson. As I remember, Dan also emphasizes a light grip pressure, 2 or 3. That may help others to release the club properly (handle up vs forward) through impact. IMHO this "feel" works well with the putter also. Thanks for the post.

The exact opposite is best for beginners in deep uneven rough. Most beginners have balls that go in random directions because they don't have a tight enough grip and the club head twists as the heel or the tip hits the ground before the rest of the club head. If they're on smooth tight fairway, they shouldn't be chipping. They should be using a bump and run.

A good thought is to "wait for it" It being the club head. The club wants to release through the ball because of how it's balanced, this is why wedge swing weights are so heavy. The forward shaft lean hes describing is basically you fighting what the club naturally wants to do by rushing the downswing and loosing or manipulating the club head. People who struggle with short game often believe they aren't doing enough or the right amount of things in the right order when they are really doing too much. Feel the club head and it will do whats its balanced and design to do :)

I discovered this at the beginning of the year, it makes so much difference, if not to results, to at least the amount of fun you can have around the green. Hitting high spinny chips is so enjoyable. My light bulb moment was when I realised that if you allowed the butt of the club to move down, then upwards at impact you could literally bounce the club off the turf and have the club face almost move upwards into the ball at impact. I went "Oh..F**K, 30 years of golf and I finally realise why they call it bounce"

I think this concept could potentially invoke more thins. I like Pete Cowens line. "Push the bounce under the ball". The other part of this is rotation. No rotation or pivot bad contact no matter what you do. Rotate or pivot and collect the ball

Another great video 👍🏻 … I’m going to hit the chipping green today and try this out. Now, how about those PARTIAL WEDGES? 🤔 … those tricky 75 yard, 50 yard pitch shots; those less than a full swing ☝🏻 I’ve heard about the clock face method (taking the club back to 8 o’clock, 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock), but do you have another method for controlling distance on those pesky short pitches? … those score killers 🙄 Keep up the good work 👊🏻

Practice. Practice hitting to known yardages. As in 60, 70, 80, and so on. If you're looking for a magic bullet it doesn't exist. I use the clock method and known yardage practice it really does dial it in

I've literally watched hours of chipping instruction videos (including Dans) and have practiced what seems like 100x as much. My most frequent miss is hitting well in front (4-6") of the ball. I had always improperly blamed it on dropping my shoulder before impact but I don't believe this is the cause. Any thoughts?

Nothing wrong with some shaft angle at impact and low point slightly but not too far in front of the ball. What you don't want is for the grip end/fulcrum point to be moving too much forwards and horizontally to the ground (as in the cricket shot example) because then the clubhead will not be descending in pendulum fashion.

I am far from a Phil Mickelson fan - BUT- he is one of the best wedge players ever. He always was a hinge and hold type chipper so there has to be value in that method. I think timing comes into play far too easily with this new method if I'm honest. Too "handsy" for lack of a better word. I see Victor Hovland's chipping has greatly improved by getting a bit steeper and taking some hands out of the chips (or so thats how I understood it after listening to a recent pod cast he was on). Each is own but less moving parts seems way more repeatable - or am I wrong? Hmmm.

Uh, no one watches the club head at the level of the club head and the ground. It is an individual feel thing. No one can see exactly where their club head impacts the ball at the moment of the impact. It is what we try to create through repetitive practice over and over again, that gets you the results you want. Very few of us can get to a course where we can repeat a process over and over again. Driving range just gives you so much for swing consistency. The rest needs on course work. Knowing the motion at club head contact as shown here is helpful too.
