I have a BS in Healthcare Administration, I had no intention of ever being a " hospital administrator." As stated, its a fantastic degree for someone already working in the healthcare space who wants to learn more about the industry and needs to move up the ladder. My career path in healthcare went Call Center Cust Svc > Claims Analyst > Jr Reports Analyst, > Reports Analyst (this is when I went back to university) > Sr. Business Analyst > Sr Healthcare Economics Consultant > Associate Director of Healthcare Economics. This is all the within the health plan space focusing recently on health data analytics for Medicare Advantage markets. Most of the people I work with have varying degrees from Economics, Statistics, Math to Engineering. This channel makes a very good point about not being to narrowly focused when looking for jobs in the healthcare space.

LOL 8:30-8:36 is so hilarious and relatable! You're so funny! Also, I see that you noted obtaining healthcare administration experience is something one should work on during undergrad and grad school. As an undergrad, I would love it if you could make a separate video discussing entry level positions a college student can pursue to fulfil that goal? Is medical scribing a good job to have as an undergrad health admin major if you are thinking about managing an outpatient medical practice when you graduate? What is the experience required for that?
@professorashley2 жыл бұрын
Medical scribing is great to do as an undergrad. It will help give you medical field experience and give that you will become so familiar with not just medical terminology, but actual medical procedures, it will put you in a good position for management later on. That being said, I believe you will have some more stepping stones in between scribing and management. I would advise you be on the look out for a good "manager mentor" while you're scribbing. That would give you some invaluable guidance to make it to management b the time you graduate.

You should be looking for any position at either a doctors office, hospital, or facility such as an ambulatory surgical center. The field of healthcare really relies on job experience, so even if you have a masters in healthcare administration, they'll want to see your work experience. There's a lot that you can learn from being in the field that you will not learn in the classroom. If you can, try to get a billing position because I feel like that's the most versatile entry-level position and you'll learn the importance and reasoning behind the tasks that people do at the check-in and check-out desks. However, if you know absolutely nothing about healthcare, then get a receptionist or front desk position and learn the basic processes behind health care.

So true. Had mostly the exact same experience. Got my MBA in healthcare administration with limited experience. Had to work multiple jobs at the bottom before making it to where I am right now, which is middle management. Still working to get to an executive level role. My whole experience has been mostly in the hospital. Other points that are important in this field is that it is extremely difficult to break into! So finding and in/mentor is definitely important. Also, it is more preferred to hire clinicians such as nurses into administration roles because having clinical knowledge is viewed as more valuable than someone that does not. Finally, this is not a field for someone that cares about making money, if that’s your main goal than you should consider a different field. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you can relate.

I’m deciding between healthcare admin, business admin, or health information management? What do anyone recommend? I’m a medical assistant and a mom of 5 so I want good income

I would recommend going Healthcare Administration if you want to stay in healthcare. Business Administration does not teach a lot about healthcare industry plus there are a lot of people with that degree. Health Information Administration it is focus more in EMR. If you go for a general Healthcare Administration you can land a Health Information job as long as you show experience with EMR and privacy laws plus leadership.

My community college offers a medical office administration CERTIFICATE. Is that too good to be true? Would I actually get hired with just a certificate?

Unfortunately, they won’t hire unless you have experience so it’s a double edged sword when it comes to get experiences before getting your degree.
