Welding for the most money?!I wish I knew what I know now. They pay ungodly amounts of money for these projects. For example: I did a platform and cage for an air unit suspended at 42 feet in air off of a hanger ceiling. This was a 3 day job with a helper. Normally this would have been a 4000.00 or so job in the outside world. These guys paid me 14,800.00 labor only, I pay for the consumables for the project. They provide all the materials and equipment except rig and pay for any food and lodging expense. Amazing. So now this is what I do and forget the pipeline. I get one maybe two jobs per month and most of them are one day or two day deals. Being on call out for emergency repairs (like a cut water main) was a 30 min fix and a 2 hour drive at 9:00pm. They paid me 4000.00 for it.
So this is what your guys need to do:
First: call the base nearest you and go online and find the phone number for the MICC (military installation contracting command) This is the same for army, airforce or navy and marines. (Airforce pays the best)
Two: ask to speak to a contracting officer (any will do but they are not the brightest..gov workers!) Ask for a list of the contractors who have contracts on that base and their contact information. They have to give it to you since its public info. The secondary way is to go Sam.gov website and can punch in the base you are looking at and it will (or should) pull up the awarded contracts for that base along with the companies and contact info
Third: Reach out to each individual company and sell yourself to them to be a welder at military bases. This is the hard part. Go see them, bug the shit out of them until they give you an opportunity, Squeaky wheel gets the grease! Once you get one general contractor to give you a contract then it opens up the doors to all the others. A tip to do when your on base doing the project is to find out who the government contract officer is for that project and go visit him and have him come see your work and totally kiss his ass--because he is the key to all the other projects on that base. That is what happened to me and he got me in with 12 other general contractors that he was overseeing their projects.
Fourth: when bidding these jobs-most gov contractors will already have a budget in place for the welding project. Always and I mean Always ask them what their budget number is for the labor on the project and that you are a labor only welder. You dont want the liability of providing material. If they say you have to- then walk away. I did that once and they called me back 3 days later and said they would provide materials.
Fifth: This probably should have been first. You have to have the ability to get on military bases. Cant be a felon or have any criminal history. If you think this could be a problem then go to any visitor center at any military base and they can run a background on you to see if you can get on. If you pass then go ahead at that time and get yourself a one year pass to the base. This is a good selling point to the general contractors and you can also go in to the base and go to the MICC and meet the contracting officers and get your name passed around. Many ways to skin this cat.
Sixth: Also should have been first. You have to be at least a 6G certified welder licensed
