A sad, sad state of affairs in 2024. It's probably the tech purchase most people end up keeping for the longest period of time (the TV) and often it is the one we just accept it's slow from day 1. Kind of arguing against myself here, but a lot of the computing hardware on a smart TV would still have to be there in some capacity even if it was a "dumb" TV. A ton of good things come from it, whether it is good image processing (and also the bad one ahah), but also just something so simple as plugging in a PS5 to a TV requires a lot of bandwidth to pass through the video and audio. We take that for granted. But like I said on the video, unless people care for a change, companies are more than happy just keeping the revenue coming in from the ads and the lack of software support long term.

Not just ads, it's all about product differentiation and feature packing for TVs to stand out in retailers. If you don't have smart TV features you're just competing with low-margin, low-cost brands like TCL and Hisense (or even worse, store brands) which will kill you on cost and scale. I agree as I still use a dumb TV and TV boxes are awful, if you're willing to consider proprietary alternatives a game console would work. Or maybe even a phone with HDMI-out via USB-C.

This rant is spot on ! However, I try helping myself. I have recently discovered an Ad-free Launcher, Projectivity, which is great. Remaining problem is the lack of security patches as you rightly mention. I don't have a solution for this either.😢
@carlosribeirooАй бұрын
The custom launcher is THE way to go if you want to remove ads from the home screen (even though a lot of the tracking for said ads is still happening on the background) However, I am a big big proponent of raising awareness for changing defaults. Most people don't care to change anything. It took me 2 days with this TV to give up and google how I could ADB wirelessly to remove apps that it wouldn't allow me to, stop services that I don't want and take control of my TV. But even if I could do that (thank god for android in that sense) it only made me feel more for the people that simply don't know this is even a possibility. As for the security angle, that is of course a concern and I believe only more streamlined hardware could help in that front, but once again PEOPLE HAVE TO CARE. It's great that these days a lot of android manufacturers are promising loooong software support for devices, but it took them years of people slowly realizing apple was doing this for them to care enough to do that. (also other factors definitely played a part, not just apple of course)

Tries to be "smart" when something new is connected. scanning. failing. trying again. meanwhile all it had to do was display the hdmi source. Functions randomly stop working, requiring a factory reset. Its a pain tbh. Then there is data collection. Keep it offline. But then maybe you need some update. While you're getting that, the tv is free to send home all the information it gathered while offline

@carlosribeirooАй бұрын
Here is a thought, a little contrarian to what I said on the video, but here goes. Chances are, even in an ideal world, the TV will not become cheaper. Image processing is a big task, and often times the hardware is doing double duty on a TV. Sony's is notorious for doing a ton of heavy lifting with their custom Bravia chips, but you still need to handle IO for things like external devices. Any HDMI 2.1 device like a console/PC or an external box will need 32-48gbps of bandwidth to handle passing through the video and audio signal, and that is not trivial to do. Like with most things worth discussing, there are multiple small caveats that make this conversation complex and intricate. But at the end of the day, I felt this video would resonate with people out there is because any change will only happen if a lot of people raise their voices. The sad truth is, most people are simply fine with being shoved ads in their face at every waking moment. Given the fact that a TV has to have all the hardware to process the image and audio, they might as well use that to make more revenue.

why no mention of Roku as an option?
@carlosribeirooАй бұрын
Honestly, that is a fair question. I simply have never used a Roku product, so that is the only reason why.
@GravageАй бұрын
Because Roku is just as bad, if not worse, than all of these "smart" TVs. They are pushing more and more ads on you to the point where they're trying to show them on your TV if you just have it plugged into your Roku (and aren't even using it) via HDMI. Roku is cancer.
@GravageАй бұрын
@@carlosribeiroo Roku is just as bad as Tizen and WebOS. Solid ads. And it's only getting worse.
@bgood172Ай бұрын
I have tried using a Roku on my LG TV since web os is so bad and initially it was pretty good, but over time they have gotten over run with garbage too.

It sucks. My $19 onn android box gets 100% of my none gaming time on my roku tv.

You should have got Sony. I’ve got a 10 year old Sony and its last software update was last year. Having said that i have a fire stick and Apple TV installed on mine so I might just factory reset it and not connect to WiFi

Yup. Have a Fire TV, didn't realise you couldn't do anything at all with it until you used an Amazon account. Barely space to add any apps without external USB storage. It's become painfully slow to use. Not recommended. Please, let's go back to dumb TVs. Or even PC monitors.

They must improve browsers in the smart tv , it is very bad to nevigate

I have been using tv's just for their display for years. I vahe always used chromecast or android sticks to use the apps. And to be honest, if you are complaining that the services are slow for about a few seconds you are nuts.
@BorisZX6RАй бұрын
google chromecast 4k and i believe the google streamer or the onn box 4k and the onn google tv 4k pro box offer an app only mode - which makes the interface more snappy and less cluttered - or you can install a custom launcher and problem solved

Despite the age the Tegra X1+ on the Shield TV 2019 is way better than the smartphones you mentioned that released the same year, since the X1+ is model made on a better (newer) node. Heck, is still more powerful than mid range devices of at least last year gpu wise, cpu wise is already being defeated but is still is more powerful than low end and mid gen by a lot with the exception of mid high ones, specially considering android tv boxes even ones by google, are worse than low end range phones.
@carlosribeirooАй бұрын
Hey! I get your point and all that is true, mostly because the form factors are all so different. The shield is much closer to a Nintendo Switch than it is to a smartphone. And don't get me wrong I still point people to the Shield in 2024, I just don't think it is a top of the line device any more (even thought it still is the best choice in 2024) It is still as good as it was in 2019 buuuuut it should be a lot better if it was given a proper upgrade.

I bought a Philips TV for £500. 18 months later the panel back lights failed. Never buying anything Philips again.

If you disable all ADs on Web OS it becomes simple app launcher which is snappier than my Chromecast with google TV 4k, and unlike android Tv there really are no ADs left. Im not offended but this is just misinformation.

I've been looking for normal tvs when I bought mine, frustrating to see they don't make em, had to buy a good Philips which is not android but idc because I use my ps5 as a media center

It's so damn annoying. These TV makers just dole of expensive nonsense and expect us to buy. Honestly, I'd rather just buy a regular TV without the "smart" and connect my streaming device to it. I have a Hisense TV I bought in July 2021 and it has NEVER gotten any OS update ever since purchase. It's been stuck on Android TV OS 9.

I avoid the included TV app on my TV like I avoid Bixby on my Samsung. Chromecast is the least worst go-around of the included cr(app), for me.

I wonder if LG Display and Samsung Display engineers have G4s and S95Ds with dumb OS and an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield connected to them to bypass the bad OS their clients install on them.
@carlosribeirooАй бұрын
ahahah of course they do! Imagine going to work on a PANEL and having random ads shoved in your face for no reason. Also, beyond that the work being done by the display teams is often focused on executing the hardware for the panel and then the manufacturers still have to actually drive the panels according to what they want. So software is probably far from the day-to-day operation of the display engineers.
