I'm really partial to Hard Promises that is often overlooked. The Waiting and a Woman in Love are Petty's Byrds/60s Brit invasion peak. Nightwatchman, Something Big, King's Road - HArd Promises hist hard. Then is more instrsoecitve on the secon side. A Thing About you is another iconic single from Petty and the heartbreakers. The there is the crowning jewel IMO - The Insider duet with Stevie Nicks. The song is so poignant and rips your heart out. One of the best songs on any album, any era. Tom Petty sounds exactly like Bob Dylan. They used to kid each other about their "nasally" voices being so much alike. When they were with the Wilburys, they even kidded about, only one of them had to come to the studio, because the one guy could do both singing parts. Funny stuff.

Tom initially didn't care much for this song as he thought it was to literal and would be a flop. It became one of his biggest hits. This song helped me through a very rough 1989. This song has taken on a life of its own with its message and stands as a metaphor for Tom's life. My favorite artist.

I believe Tom Petty wrote this song about his record company trying to screw him over.
@maceomaceo113 ай бұрын
This song was co-written with Jeff Lynne, Tom was riding high and in control at this point. Petty did sue his label, MCA, in 1981. It was over them pricing his album at $9.98, when he marketed himself as an "every man" artist. Not wanting to price gauge his audience like all the major artists. In short, in less than a week MCA said "fine, but we're taking our cut" and Tom was fine with that and $8.98 it was. Before that, when his original label Backstreet got bought out by MCA, "Refugee" was inspired by feeling like an outcast on a major label. That's the extent of Tom's label troubles.
