Ray Davies is one of the most brilliant, effortless songwriters ever. The songs just pour out of him. Everyone talks about the Beatles, Stones, and The Who (who were all fantastic of course) but the Kinks were right there with them and kept it going for decades.

The Beatles were far superior to the Kinks. But the Kinks gave the Beatles a run for their money *at their own game* more than any other band at the time -- both bands kept reinventing themselves with "perfect songs" (quoting A&A) that didn't sound like anyone else or even themselves (as A&A noted). Bands like the Stones, Yardbirds and Animals were blues bands at heart. I love the Who to pieces, but they didn't really reinvent themselves until Who's Next -- their great songs before then didn't sound all that different from one another.

When I hear this song, I picture a 9-year-old me sitting at our kitchen table in Southern Cal while it plays on the radio. I assume it is a real memory. I loved it from the first time I heard it and I wanted to hear more from the Kinks. I was vaguely familiar with them ("You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night"), but my musical tastes at the time were pretty much guided by my older sister and she mustn't have been a Kinks fan, because I don't remember any of their music coming through the bedroom walls from her portable Hi-Fi. They are the first group I remember striking out to discover on my own and I've been a fan ever since. Every song mentioned in this comment section is worth a listen, but I notice that people rarely praise two songs I particularly enjoy, "A Well-Respected Man" and "Victoria".

And little wonder at the fistfights if you hear of Ray's behavior over just That song and Dave! Being bipolar and in chronic pain excuses only so much... Dave wasn't an angel either. When I saw them I Almost hoped to see one of their legendary fights, but I didn't want the show to end! I was lucky and the show was peaceful and perfect!

You guys should see the video. It’s them with their instruments in a totally wintry scene, snow on the ground their breath visible, singing about lazing on a sunny afternoon in the summertime lol.

Back in the day this was my favorite song by the Kinks and one of my overall favorites of the mid 60s

Interesting that Taxman by The Beatles was from 1966.

That's when the Labour government in the UK were levying 90% income tax on the very wealthy, which affected a lot of successful rock and pop stars.

So QUINTESSENTIALY British... Maybe even more so than The Beatles Always sends a shiver down my spine, might be the most WINTERY "summer" song of the 60's!
