Ray Davies is one of the most brilliant, effortless songwriters ever. The songs just pour out of him. Everyone talks about the Beatles, Stones, and The Who (who were all fantastic of course) but the Kinks were right there with them and kept it going for decades.

You won't find a bigger Kinks fan than me. Saw them live 8 times. But the Stones and The Who are not The Beatles, and although they are closer than those bands, neither are The Kinks. Ray is far superior songwriter than anyone in the Stones or The Who, but nobody can touch McCartney, Lennon, and Harrison.

Ray was still putting out good new songs in his 60’s. Thanks to a local DJ I got turned onto his “Workingman’s Cafe” album and thought it was really good ! The track “You’re Asking Me” really reminds me of a Kinks song. I also loved the doc about him “Imaginary Man”, named after a song from that album.

@@heartoftherose Thats what we are talking about, writing songs, and Dylan had written over 70 songs, many of them hits, before The Beatles, Stones , Kinks or The Who, even came to America, which is where they all got famous. Many question Dylan’s voice, including me, but he could write songs.

This is why the Kinks were the only British band in the day that could truly compete with the Beatles -- perfect songs, but in a whole different style. If you love this, you'll love their "Dead End Street" (also 1966).

The Beatles were far superior to the Kinks. But the Kinks gave the Beatles a run for their money *at their own game* more than any other band at the time -- both bands kept reinventing themselves with "perfect songs" (quoting A&A) that didn't sound like anyone else or even themselves (as A&A noted). Bands like the Stones, Yardbirds and Animals were blues bands at heart. I love the Who to pieces, but they didn't really reinvent themselves until Who's Next -- their great songs before then didn't sound all that different from one another.
@loosilu

@@alexjbennett1017 Beg to differ regarding the Who! they started as a blues band, then because of the Kinks success, the record company pushed them to make original singles, which led to Can't Explain and My Generation. They reinvented themselves with Tommy, then again with Who's Next.

This was No 1 in UK for weeks in heady Summer of 1966 when England won FIFA World Cup. Everything was changing - Beach Boys had Pet Sounds, Beatles had Revolver. New bands Cream, Hendrix, Pink Floyd and others were emerging through the London club scene. American soul was coming across the Atlantic. The pop scene was varied and there was something for everybody.

If the music union hadn't banned The Kinks for 4 years during the height of Beatlemania, things would be quite different. I saw The Kinks in 1978 and they were fantastic. My husband and our friend were musicians or I likely wouldn't have been aware of The Kinks! I don't think anybody I went to college with knew anything about them other than the hit song, "Lola!" ITA, Low Budget is an amazing album, pretty funny, too! The title song "I'm a cut-price person in a low budget land", and "Gallon of Gas", "I got some coke and some speed, all the drugs that you need, but I can't buy a gallon of gas" (during the early '70's gas shortage). Also, "Wish I Could Fly Like Superman" ("I'm too weak, I'm so thin, I'd like to fly but I can't even swim"), what a great bunch of lyrics on this album, not to mention great rock. Another fave album from that period is "Sleepwalker".

When I hear this song, I picture a 9-year-old me sitting at our kitchen table in Southern Cal while it plays on the radio. I assume it is a real memory. I loved it from the first time I heard it and I wanted to hear more from the Kinks. I was vaguely familiar with them ("You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night"), but my musical tastes at the time were pretty much guided by my older sister and she mustn't have been a Kinks fan, because I don't remember any of their music coming through the bedroom walls from her portable Hi-Fi. They are the first group I remember striking out to discover on my own and I've been a fan ever since. Every song mentioned in this comment section is worth a listen, but I notice that people rarely praise two songs I particularly enjoy, "A Well-Respected Man" and "Victoria".

Loved it enough to still remember all the words. Seriously, it’s 58 years old I can’t believe it. When I was in my 20s we didn’t listen to anything that was 58 years old unless your grandma had some old scratchy record from 1900 which she didn’t ha. I’m glad you love the Kinks.

The Kinks and The Who before 1973, = the best. "Who Will Be The Next In Line" is my personal fave. Often overlooked.

I think my favorite Kinks song is "No More Looking Back" from the1975 album School Boys In Disgrace. I was a Softmore in high school then myself. What a time to be a teenager!

The "squeeze," mentioned was a UK government "credit squeeze," trying to get the UK economy under control. The Beatles also mention the taxman in one of their songs. These guys were being taxed to the hilt, being left with pennies in each pound. The USA equivelant would be something like 95 cents in the dollar, and the band being left with 5 cents.

Check out She's Got Everything for an absolutely killer early Kinks track. Great guitar solo, piano, hand claps, do do do vocals, it's just so much fun.

The Romantics did a great cover of that on their debut power pop classic lp; self titled. Listen closely to the bridge on the original. You'll hear the melody for the later hit by Deep Purple 'Woman From Tokyo'.

The lyrics in this song are so great and the whole thing is really catchy. Add to that this is the Kinks, and we have a total banger. The bass on this song is so good, it really sets the pace and the bop.

The Kinks wrote a song that I really like you could call it a sequel to Lola since the first verse is I met a girl called Lola and I took her back to my place... It's A Hard Rock song and it's called Destroyer

One of those 60's songs that stays because it makes you feel so Good! Ray Davies effortless singing style carries the story happily through your mind, so that it easily becomes a sing-along., one of the Kinks best tunes, I was 15 & loved it, bought the 45 straight away. A Great A+ as is "Dead End Street"

I LOVE the first words out of your mouth: "impeccable". Totally. A perfect song, a perfect recording, perfect performance. That song has never grown old for me, it always hits the spot! I always associate this with "Waterloo Sunset" for some reason, even though it's from different albums. Both are perfect.

As a kid, I was lying on the grass by the sea in Ireland. It was the day this song came out and I already liked The Kinks because they already had a couple of hit records, including You Really Got Me, on which the unique guitar sound changed pop music forever. Sunny Afternoon came on, I loved it, but I thought, "And there was me thinking that Ray must be doing so well and have no troubles at all".

And little wonder at the fistfights if you hear of Ray's behavior over just That song and Dave! Being bipolar and in chronic pain excuses only so much... Dave wasn't an angel either. When I saw them I Almost hoped to see one of their legendary fights, but I didn't want the show to end! I was lucky and the show was peaceful and perfect!
