When Shin was in that fight and "heard" Lena, to him that means she was absorbed by the Legion like the others that have died.

This episode Shin really thinks Lena is dead. When he demonstrates his ability to the general, the last place he marks with legion before they stop him is in the Republic, inside the Gran Mur, in District 1, where Lena lives. Shin realises here and now that the Legion has overrun the Republic and there is no way that Lena could have survived (as far as he knows). The ghosts of his fallen comrades celebrate the fall of the Republic a bit, maybe distasteful but understandable given the circumstances. Shin was already in a bad place but he at least still had the major, but now... She was supposed to be different, everyone else eventually just becomes a name he has to carry with him in his heart, another ghost haunting him, but she was supposed to carry his name when death finally takes him she was supposed to be HIS reaper, and now Lena has joined Kujo, and Kaie, and Haruto, and Daiya, and everyone else. The one connection Shin had to the future, to something beyond war, is lost to him forever. From now on there really is no hope for Shin. (Unless by some miracle he is wrong about Lena's death) Also great visual detail, Shin cannot cry and so his reflection sheds a tear for the major (for the future) on his behalf (9:32 in your video, 16:57 in the episode)

This is the moment where shin truly begins to bargain with reality and accepting that Lena is most probably dead. It's so sad tbh, when she walks past him saying I won't let you die. The fact that she's so short compared to him too, even with the hat. It must have felt so hopeless to him.

Another mad banger. 8:33 That raindrop replacing the tears he can't shed...I got the incredible sorrow Shin felt after hearing that San Magnolia was gone, so Lena is dead, but I just realized how vague that might seem for some viewers. 86 is so artsy-fartsy, but I think it's perfect. 10:57 Anyone else think Theo says he feels lonely because there's no Handler One to talk to on their way to death? I just always thought that was the only option, unless, I just now thought this, maybe their squadron going alone?

"You want us to stop being who we are in order to satisfy your sense of justice and sympathy--is that what you're saying?" The boy in front of her. He had the face of a child his age, something he hadn't shown when the Federal Army had taken him in over six months ago, or even during the great offensive. A child whose one precious possession had been casually taken away and trampled on before his very eyes. Stubborn. "I'm grateful that you were saved. But that doesn't mean you should pity me. You shouldn't tell us not to fight either. --We..." Because this is all we have. Despite the suppression, no, because of it. It sounded like he was spitting blood. Why do we fight? Why do we fight when there's no reason to fight? To the members of the Eighty-Six, there was no more insulting question. Because all they had was their pride. They had nothing left, except the pride of not giving up on life until the last moment and fighting until the last moment. All the family members he wanted to protect were dead, and he had no hometown to return to. He didn't even know the history he should have relied on, even those of his own blood relatives, and he didn't even remember a single story from the picture book he was read to every night as a child. His dignity was completely trampled on by the country that was supposed to be his homeland, and they simply wanted him dead. He no longer had any reason to survive, yet he clung to life. To at least maintain their own form, with nothing but themselves. All they had was pride - the pride of deciding to fight to the end, not to run from fate, not to succumb to despair, on a battlefield of death, bound by the armies of mechanical ghosts and the malice of the persecutors. What are they fighting for? When asked, they cannot answer. There is no way to answer. There is nothing to lose if they do not fight, nothing to fight to protect. However, because fighting to the end is their only pride, they do not want to lose that pride. Even if it means losing their lives that would have been longer if they had turned their eyes away and run away. "Running away from the battlefield while leaving the others to fight, or turning a blind eye and living until someone hangs you, is the same as those in the Republic. Pretending to be alive is the same as being dead. -- I will not become the same as you." The strength of the words spat out, which was unusual for this usually cold-hearted boy, is the strength of the rejection he felt. Damn, Grete thought, biting her crimson lip. She realized what she had lost. The pride that was the only thing they had left to cling to after having had everything stolen from them. And the small amount of trust that they had placed in her because of that. They are the Eighty-Six. Abandoned on the battlefield, living on the battlefield, and fighting on in that battlefield where there is nothing but despair -- these are helpless children with nothing but their pride. They don't have to fight anymore. Forget about the battlefield and live in peace. The words that Grete and the others had been repeating up until now, meant as concern, were to them an attempt to take away even the last of their remaining pride. Their crimson eyes are lowered, and they never look in my direction again. "Giving orders from the rear could result in a fatal time lag.... I will be taking command of the suicide force directly."

13:27 Alana, I think that his imagining Lena's words are actually making his madness worse! Hearing she was gone, with San Magnolia, was like the ultimate FU to his heart. He told her to survive, he thought she'd remain when he was gone, he had grown to care for her. With this episode, he can't even hope she's okay. Not only have +500 86 left him behind, but he actually had an Alba he wanted to protect, yet....couldn't. Debuff: -20 to Sanity Buff: +10 to Willpower
