+DimebagVision Nah man, Venom Snake got more done than Solidus ever did, even as his turn as President of the United States. His part in Shadow Moses blew up in his face, and the whole Big Shell incident failed in spectacular fashion, capped off with being killed by Raiden. Venom Snake put together Diamond Dogs and took down Skull Face and his nonsense scheme, then did the whole Outer Heaven thing years later. If anything, this game showed that Venom Snake is on par with Big Boss, at the least. As for Big Boss's sons, Solid Snake is the best. His triumphs at Outer Heaven, Zanzibarland, and Shadow Moses, his personal decision to fight for a better future between MGS1 and MGS2 (read: character development), and making peace with Big Boss at the end of MGS4 is pretty sound proof.

What people don't notice, or perhaps don't comment on, is that Venom Snake ALMOST gave him the Sea Burial. He almost cast them away, and then he decided not to. He changed his mind at the last moment, because he didn't want to lose their only and final remnants. Not because he had to, not because he wanted to act like Big Boss, but because he didn't want to lose his men in that final moment; he wanted to keep their memory alive, not only for his men, but also for himself. He chose to keep them rather than to throw him away. That will always speak to who he really is, Big Boss, Medic, or otherwise.

There are plenty of great scenes in this game despite the weak story and this sums up the most frustrating aspect of this game. The story falls apart and begins to get boring and disjointed (do three missions and just wait for a cutscene to happen with no logical cause, repeat). But then parts of the game such as the quarantine platform, the hospital prologue, and the bloody warehouse full of patients, almost everything Kaz has to say, the end of Quiets storyline, and the end of GZ (if that counts) are all just so well done and memorable. A game getting so much right but then missing the mark in other areas might be more frustrating than a game that just fails across the board.
@hudyjopps53918 жыл бұрын
TPP's story is mostly muddled due to executive fuckery on Konami's part. Game production, a lot like mainstream movie production, is driven by profit, shareholders, and marketing teams. Metal Gear's explosive budget is due to all of the blood and sweat poured into animating, voicing, and writing scenes like this. Had instead Kojima had his way with the story, had profits and sales targets not have been a concern, this is but a small glimpse of what could have always been.

The avarage fan that cries about game being incomplete and Venom having no personality are the same people who usually stop playing after they take down the sahelanthropus. Even the sidequest with Paz is enough to realize that Ahab is hypnotized to be a remorseless soldier but ends up grieving over what he couldn't save. Big Boss would just move on and keep his bodycount going. Venom's entire personality is one that has been locked away and tries to shine trough the darkness that is the Big Boss's meme. People just can't see that in their 3 hour gameplay so they call Venom out for not having a personality.

This is my first metal gear game but I thought the story was great even if it "fell flat and uncompleted". As a new player all these interesting characters had me guessing who they were and what was going to happen. The phantom pain was one of the best games ive played. I loved each cutscene and getting them was a treat because most of the characters were quick to like. The story about war, disease, child soldiers, revenge, and everything was really dark and the detail into the character's backstories through tapes made it even better.

I personally found the game quite frustrating. Never finished it cause I thought it was too ridiculous. Plot was so complicated I felt like I needed a PHD in just about every subject to even understand a quarter of it. All this talk of clones and multiple people who are the same person but aren't actually the same person? I was more lost than Matt Damon on Mars. Gameplay was so overly complicated I was having a hard time trying to figure out what I had to do next. I didn't like that I had to balance an ever dismishing resource that was spent upon every action I did. Sorting people into specific roles is fine but ti was detail oriented I just got annoyed with it. Also, for a guy who is supposed to be stealthy, why does he make so much noise?

@@HybridSpektar I'm guessing V was your first game? MGS is a large series driven mainly by the story with a distinct play style which changes over the course of the series. V is actually one of the weakest in story (though I believe it has really grown on the fandom after replaying and understanding it more.) But I wouldn't say it's the best introduction to the series since it's right in the middle of the timeline as it ties up a lot of loose ends. MGS 1 or MGS 3 would ease someone into the lore and game play better as 3 is the first chronologically and 1 is the first 'game' game. (Not counting Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake)

Venom Snake was the best Big Boss. Awful pacing and disjointed-ness aside, look at his entire existence in MGSV. Every decision Venom Snake ever made was to save people. I think it is evident that he had his own personality and morals despite being hypnotized into Big Boss. Big Boss, Huey, the kids, Quiet, DD, the fact that the demon meter is highly dependent on killing people instead of knocking out/fultoning. The Paz cutscenes make it obvious that somewhere deep down, Medic is haunted by not being able to save Paz. The ending is the ultimate conflict for Venom Snake, because in order to save the rest of Motherbase, he has to kill his own men. Venom Snake tried to save everyone, even if it ultimately leads to his destruction. He was introduced to us showing that he was willing to do it in the most literal sense.
@giox995 жыл бұрын
Very good summary of his character. Venom is a fascinating character, and an underappreciated one I'd say. Some people think he's just a random medic or that he just represents the player (that's partially true, more on that in a minute), and even though we don't know much about his past except that he was the best and most trusted soldier Big Boss had on his side, his tragic story in MGSV (and later MG, I guess) was gripping. He has a very distinctive personality (for example he's willing to forgive and tries to avoid violence, as we see mostly in the second chapter of the game), though his character development is mostly subtle (that's why he speaks through actions, which I preferred compared to long expositions. Body language and subtle expressions also play a bigger role in this game). All of his decisions are justified once you understand that he was a brainwashed man who tried to act the way he thought Big Boss would act, after he was given his role. Thus, he ended up being a better version of Big Boss and a contrast to him, by trying to emulate his persona, and that way Kojima was able to explore two characters at once. That doesn't mean that Venom's perfect of course. The way he intended to treat the child soldiers was... morally corrupt. During scenes like the one I just mentioned we can see the tear between his real self, and the one of a war monger that he was forced to be (not to mention the optional stuff like the construction of nukes or the combat deployment missions, through which you can basically risk the lives of your soldiers in order to gather materials, money etc with the press of a button, a simple order. Shady stuff, I prefer saving animals). Now, about the twist that you're not Big Boss, but you're... you, more or less, I loved it. I like it when games tell a story by taking advantage of the medium's capabilities, and MGSV is a good example. I don't know why the general consensus is that Kojima gave us a pat in the back during the true ending, he actually showed us indirectly how Big Boss became an utter piece of shit (which is what people wanted from V, cause apparently they didn't get it with MGS3 and especially Peace Walker) by revealing that he exploited us throughout the whole game and took credit for everything we did, while we got erased from history. We became a proxy. Not to mention that Big Boss treated Venom the way The Boss got treated, and not just the way he himself got treated by the US. It was his ultimate downfall and after this his MG2:SS speech made total sense. Also, it's an inversion of MGS2's ending, with Venom's identity being taken away from him forever, while Raiden was encouraged to find a new one, and stop being a pretender. edit: Made some edits to make my point a bit clearer. Sorry for the long ass comment. edit 2: It's pretty important that Venom is a medic and not a "regular" soldier, as stated by others. Once you know that, the Paz side quest makes way more sense. There's a sense of a repressed, burdening psychological trauma, and regret. Then, there's the quarantine stuff, that's even worse. It's sad that most players didn't appreciate the more subtle storytelling, thus claiming that "there's no story" in MGSV. My belief is that they got used to most things being explained and felt alienated (which isn't good, because there's a lot to unpack in every mainline entry, especially on a meta-narrative level. Even in the messy, overexplanatory MGS4).

Something I just realized here... that I knew didn't sit right the first time when I didn't know this wasn't Big Boss... was how unlike Jack he acted here. This isn't something Big Boss would do. It's out of character. And that's because it's not him. This is Venom, his own person. A once medic who was one of the many faces of the expendable MSF soldiers. The irony of Big Boss is that he wanted a place unlike Gene's "Army's Heaven"; "a place not of soldiers, but for them" "somewhere outside your heaven". And here he is, abandoning them like they're nothing. What was felt here was Venom feeling the pain of his comrades because he is one of them, although he may not consciously know that since he's been hypotherapied. It's a more pure scene where he's just you, the player, a medic, an anyone of the bunch... One day I want to do a full case study on this game. Say what you will about MGSV, I feel like the more I look back on it, the more there is to unpack. It might not be appreciated in this time. But in years, this will be a game that was Kojima's finest and most fitting ways of dropping the mic with Konami and a swan song to an incredible saga. There's more than meets the eye with this game, and there's so much depth to it despite popular opinion. I hold it in highest regards next to MGS3/PW, and that's saying something for me as a long time fan. I respect Kojima's decisions in this game. In the words of Big Boss, "as long as the times refuse to change, we're going to make a hell of a racket". "Will the times erase us, or work with us?"

I honestly have to resist the urge to say that Big Boss abandoned them, big boss was simply traveling to create the perfect world for soldiers to live in. If you listen to the audio logs when he is first woken up in the hospital before Venom, he is very reluctant to go through with this plan to have Venom impersonate him while he leaves. But he knew it was necessary in order to take the proper steps towards creating Outer Heaven.

It's hard to tell. Jack may have been flippant throughout mgs3 and portable ops, he always seemed to have a high respect and regard for MSF during peace walker. The incident that transpired during ground zeroes would be a little heavy: a false inspection leads to the sinking of motherbase, the murder of almost all his soldiers, watching paz explode in her freefall? When you consider it in it's full context, he really didn't abandon much of anything. It was taken from him. In starting over, he put running outer heaven as his priority yes, but left setting up the public eye of big boss through diamond dogs in the hands of what people he knew he could trust to pull through: Miller, Ocelot, and one of the only surviving soldiers of MSF in the medic. A man he trusted enough to be him. While venom's actions with this are absolutely all his own, I wouldn't discount big boss to not have honored the fallen in some way as well.

To all those who despise the ending and the fact that this isn't even the real, legendary, Big Boss. this dude here, the Phantom is the Big Boss we all wanted and deserved. a leader, proudly posing as both the gun and the shield on behalf of all his comrades and one that doesn't simply let their memory fade into the ocean. what we learn here is that there always will be something better. that when we make a choice, we can always choose to be a better or worse version of ourselves. the real Big Boss made his choice alright: to abandon his comrades in order to protect his head. this is what would have become of him if he hadn't done so, if he had the courage to face the world and fight not for his ambition but for the sake of his comrades, both the ones lost in the Caribbean, the ones lost here in the Seychelles and the ones that still remained and carried his Phantom Pain with him. Venom Snake is, to me, the real Big Boss. the Boss that, in the end, didn't get disillusioned and tyrranical, the Boss that wanted to live like a free man, the man who left his mark upon the world. not the man who sold it.

It was a signal that beckoned out to him that the sea was uncaring for the plights of the men that once were, and that they deserved a better fate after life than to be mere particles drifting along the bottom of the ocean floor. That is why he pulled back. As others have said, the direction of this painful yet uplifting scene is absolutely excellent. The pain in Venom's voice is so very real. Right when he says "I won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea", you can feel his anguish as his voice fades near the end of the sentence. The way his voice remains hushed until he turns around to answer Miller. He was not talking to anyone behind him, only to the remnants of his former men. Even in death, the bond can be felt. The way he motions to kiss the air, as if to finally say goodbye to the spirit. The subliminal messaging throughout is top notch, and is even reinforced later, what with Huey later being cast out to that same vast sea, as well as the camera not including Huey in the final pan away shot, suggesting subtly that he is not worthy of being a true comrade. I adore this scene. It's so good. It can still make me cry all this time later. It is artistry at work.

This was the best scene in the game. It's crazy how much these soldiers honor Big Boss. When they salute you, you can hear them humming the Peace Walker theme as it plays on the radio in the room.. crazy.

The most heart breaking part of the mission leading up to this cutscene was that the iDroid still played the "Staff Member Died" announcement every time you have to shoot one of the guys when previously you only hear that sound after random events that happen at mother base when one of them dies in the sick bay or something. *bang* "Staff Member Died" *Bang* "Staff Member Died" *Bang* "Staff Member Died" Also I'm pretty sure everyone was about ready to reach through their monitor and slam Huey's head into a wall when he kept talking shit even up into the cutscene >:(

Kojima should've never put so many pivotal scenes in his trailers. Imagine if I never knew this scene would happen. Or that I would come back to base at one point and have to shoot my own soldiers.

starfox300 Well, that was the smart move. I just love trailers, but now I think I'm going to start watching less trailers overall from now on. I've already gone on media blackout for Star Wars. Got no idea what's going on in Ep VII. The ZombieMan Yeah, I trusted that when kojima put these kinds of scenes in, it wouldn't take away from the experience too much. But little did I know that most of the good shit happens in Ch 2. Just wish I had never watched those trailers now -_-
@TimeBomb014X9 жыл бұрын
Robert Koh but if he didn't you wouldn't had been emotionally invested in the trailers, besides the scene is still amazing when you take in what happened before
@robkoh72909 жыл бұрын
The ZombieMan I will admit, the scenes make for powerful trailers. But that's because the scenes themselves are so strong. I'm a fan of MGS, I was invested when I first saw it at the beginning of Xbox's E3 presser, the one with Quiet's Theme and Sins of the Father. Wish I didn't know the quarantine mission or the ash scene existed. Would have been a beautiful surprise.

This is why I feel Sutherland was the better pick for MGSV's Big Boss. The only time I've seen Solid Snake as sorrowful as Big Boss in this scene is in thr Meryl death ending in MGS1. And if Hayter provided a performance like that for a scene like this, it wouldn't have been as effective. The subtle nature of Sutherland's performance is pretty good. Was Sutherland the best pick? I don't know. Would Hayter have done a better job? I say, no. And that's ok. It's just my opinion.
@JDHJDH17 жыл бұрын
To me, this was the scene that settled it once and for all. David Hayter's gruff overacting had a certain charm in a series known for being over the top and every bit as campy as it is melodramatic, but this game had a very different feel from the others and Snake really needed a more understated performance to match. Sutherland's lines were few but all were memorable, meaningful, and delivered just right. Even though I think MGSV suffers from being unfocused and not having any of the memorable boss fights the series is known for (apart from Quiet), Venom Snake has become my favorite of the Snakes, and a large part of that is Sutherland.
@giygas_95777 жыл бұрын
I really doubt Hayter could have pulled this dialogue off like Sutherland did.
@NoneShallDefyMe7 жыл бұрын
Sarge I 100% agree. There are still silly things in this game but the tone is different. It's a lot more serious and Snake having this goofy garbled voice just wouldn't feel right, and honestly I think Hayter would have ruined this scene if he was in it. BB needed a voice that demanded attention and was battle hardened that you could tell had real pain and history behind the man, and that's something Hayter never could do. Sutherland sounds like an old soldier while Hayter sounds like a goof trying to sound tough.
@guiltypresentation58737 жыл бұрын
pollo20x6 I agree. sutherland's performance was really good taking that role. with his voice, i can actually feel how dead inside big boss / venom snake sounds like because he had to go through all these horrible stuff
