Was Diane some version of the ferryman on the River Styx? Her last name being something close to Carter or Cooper makes me think it may have been Charon (the name of the ferryman) and the delivery guy just couldn’t remember it. Plus that line at the end when she says she might take the guy up on his offer to come see him one day (when he eventually becomes a cadaver himself) has me wondering…

This was a terrific story, spooky, creepy and intriguing. A fantastic narration and great story telling. Who---or what-----was Diane? What was she doing with the cadavers? Why did she look so strange? And the smell of burning that accompanied her? Diane was no outright monster----the watchman was not immediately devoured or disappeared at his first investigation, even though he apparently had no one to miss him, if he did disappear. She responded well to his offer of company, even though she refused it. She definitely came to the defense of the watchmen. You have to wonder-----he gave her a little companionship, a little friendship, and she appreciated it. Her answer to his offer of a meeting is both promising and a bit creepy. She says, if he is willing, they might meet one day. That statement is interesting and just a bit menacing, yet it was without directly presenting a threat to him. After all, why go to the trouble of saving him, if she meant him ill? Does she mean that she will find him when he himself is a dead body, having died in the natural progression of time? But if that was the case, why would she ask him if his offer to meet remained open? After his death, why would she need his permission to find him? Is she suggesting that she might find him after she finishes whatever her "work" was? After she completes whatever it is she is doing? After it would be safe for her to meet him? We are left to wonder and speculate. Whatever supernatural creature Diane was, she did not strike me as a soulless monster. Even with her defense of the watchman----she killed the thug who hurt the watchman and directly threatened her, but let the others run away unharmed, even though the suggestion is that she could have killed them all. This felt less like a horror story, and more like a story of two lonely souls, connecting by chance over an offer of friendship freely given. And while it is a very satisfying conclusion, it leaves the listener wondering if we should hope for that eventual future meeting or not. The story was very well written, very engagingly told. It gives you enough details to let you care about the protagonist, but does not waste a lot of time. Far too many of these stories end in gore and blood, the protagonist killed, or dammed or whatever. I prefer this ending. He walks away with an interesting memory. It is very much like how something like this might actually happen in real life. After all, what would you do if this happened to you? Nothing really. You would go on with your life, but you would remember and wonder. The entire story is satisfying but intriguing and thought provoking. A very different twist on the idea of "haunted" abandoned places. The narration is wonderful, and very well done, easy to listen to. Highly recommended!

This is such a beautiful analysis - it really adds something to the story, beyond just revealing the literal events that have to be distilled. It does strike me as a more surreal story rather than a horror story, especially being there was only danger for those who hurt other people - it’s a ghostly and kind of comforting tale.

I like the little 4th wall nod about "no set of weird rules" that we come to expect out of most of the guard job stories. BCI MK VI eh? Feels like to me it was an AI of sorts he was talking to and Diane's body was the one the company had been using during the previously mentioned incident researching whatever they were. And it was getting the deliveries, looking for a fresh one it could successfully take over to leave.

But I even go into older stories while I doze off as the pain meds kick in so I can function for a bit longer. I’m fairly sure that my husband gets a kick out of the random lines I tell him that just crack me up, too. So essentially, 3 adults get amused by this channel in this house.

I've done it. It's creepy AF. It gets in your head. There was one building in particular that I would've bet my life was haunted while working there. Now I realize I was probably just spooking myself... but still wouldn't want to do another shift there. It was a huge old brick building in central PA that used to be a school and got turned into a government building of some sort. The first few weeks working I turned on the gym lights and played basketball. The bounce of the ball echoed through the empty building like gun shots. I swear I started hearing laughter between bounces. I'd stop and listen and the laughter would fade as the sound reverberation of the ball stopped. Then the lights started turning off on me randomly leaving me blind in a pitch black gymnasium with laughing sounds and a bouncing ball I couldn't find. My adrenaline spikes a little just remembering feeling my way to the wall in the pitch black and shuffle walking to find the door. Second time the lights went out on me I gave up on the gymnasium. Had other things happen too, I'd find random open doors into rooms that didn't even have working lights, creaks and bangs all night every night. One night I was hanging out in the theater reading and decided to take a peek backstage. I almost punched a mannequin that popped up in my flashlight beam. I was a nervous wreck by the time I quit that job, lol. Like I said, I'm sure I was just spooking myself, but you couldn't get me back in that place at night for a thousand bucks. I sound like a wimp when I reread this. I'm not normally even that kind of guy. I do a lot of solo backpacking where you get that buzz of adrenaline being miles from any other humans in the middle of the night... and it's creepy... but it doesn't even compare to that dang old school building, lol

@@mattymediocrity8255 I don't think you sound like a wimp at all. I completely understand, it sounds like an absolutely terrifying place! There's something about being alone that changes places.... I wonder sometimes if it's because we spook ourselves out? Or if we're just more open to really listening when we're alone. I'm not saying for sure it was paranormal, like you said maybe you were just freaking yourself out.... but if the place really felt that off... then that might be your instincts kicking in and trying to get you the hell out of there for a good reason.... @TechnoplasmProductions
@TechnoplasmProductions Жыл бұрын
I think what happened was the building caught fire at some point and that was the accident the delivery man was referring to, Diane who was indeed an accountant working in this building was caught up in this accident on the 5th floor! Since it was the top floor she was unable to get down in time before the flames nearly burnt the building to the ground and instead of dying she became some sort of thing. Not a malevolent thing but some sort of ghost or entity with supernatural powers. Her work was using the cadavers to try and bring her dead coworkers or friends back to life. When the punk was trying to kill the security guard she made him burst into flames, it ate him up until he was nothing but that ozone burning smell. That promise that she made to him was to not only meet back up with him later on in life but to bring him back from the dead as a part of her work to live with her. But then that’s all just speculation so, regardless a brilliant story.

I dunno. I kind of got the feeling that Diane was a doctor who had experimented on herself and gained some strange monsterlike condition, which is why she was unable to socialize and be with the watchman. I did not take the comment that maybe she would take him up on the drink to be anything sinister. I got the feeling that she meant were she able to rid herself of her condition, she would love to genuinely meet with him in person. As far as everything else, with the cadavers, to the burning smell, to whatever experimentation the building was used for, I have no clue and that's the mysterious aspect of the story. I really enjoyed this story. I would like more explanation, which is the case for most creepypastas.
