Really loved this story! I especially liked the ending. Far too many of these stories have unhappy and tragic endings, so this one was very much appreciated. It was terrific that the protagonist has found his calling as the new Gatekeeper. After all, the old "keeper" is elderly, and in poor health, he would need a younger replacement. You have to wonder if he was not led there by a higher power. And frankly, he is right about being needed there, far more than anywhere else. He is saving lives and protecting people, and maybe keeping dangerous supernatural creatures from roaming out of the park. A mysterious, spooky, but very satisfying story! Narration is fabulous, as always!

@@heatherfruin5050 Where I live minimum wage is 13.65/hr (USD) as of 2023 and most businesses here hate paying more than that. (They also complained when it went up this year.) More stories like this please! I love the concrete and centered area of the gas station. It let me concentrate on imagining the gas station even though there weren't a ton of details given. Then when you wandered outside of it, I could always connect back to it knowing that's where the job takes place. It's a weird thing I know, but I'm having trouble describing the feeling of a safe, yet confined area (gas stations aren't generally big except for Buckees). The characters are likable and the situations are reasonable and when logical is applied, it's decent. I've probably listened to 400+ stories and this is 1 of about 4 that I think I could listen to in a coma over and over and still enjoy - but also, I pray I never have to find out whether that's true.... ;P

That was a wonderful story!!! I like to listen to your stories as I play cards on my phone. Most nights I go to sleep with the chickens and sleep like a rock, for awhile. Once awake I try to stay quiet and not stir around so everyone else can sleep. Your voice is soothing and the cards are monitonous so I often listen and get sleepy again. In the story I like the help of Tictok and old Sarge. The fact that the owner is so concerned about helping people not wear the color red is astonishing. He loses a lot of money in his quest to save lives. So the story has a couple of heros. Nice change from spooky stories. Just so full of imagination! Kudos to the author! Also the young "assistant watcher" seems to be cut from the same cloth. Just wonderful.

This was a fantastic story, so well done! My only comment would be about the animation at the end. The guy said that he wouldn’t have been able to see it if it wasn’t moving, and only it’s outline. Right as this bright electric giant skeleton thing appears onscreen, something you’d be able to see from miles away. It’s just incongruous with the otherwise amazing story. Love that he stayed and called if his dream job. A part 2 about the green lightning would be awesome, btw. Thanks for sharing it!

I was working at an Exxon Gas Station in 1989, I was 19. Back in the day, gas stations offered "full service" or self service. Self service is just what it sounds like. You pull up, get out, and fuel your car yourself. Full service is a relic of the past. You pull up, stay in your car, pop the hood and sit back and relax. The attended (that was me) will fuel your car, open your hood, check your belts and fluids, and check the tires. If any fluids were needed we put them in, if belts were needed, we could do that too. And of course we'd put air in the tires if needed. That year Exxon was responsible for one of the worst ecological disasters to that time when a supper tanker, Exxon Valdez, ran aground and spilled it's cargo into the sea iff the coast of Alaska. The oil washed up on shore almost instantly and Exxon Corp got a lot of anger directed at them. At some point after this a car pulled into Full service and as I leaned into the window to greet the driver something weird happened. There was a bright flash of light, I heard a popping sound and the next thing I knew I was sitting on the ground with a very sore mouth and blood dribbling onto my shirt. This guy had punched me in the mouth, apparently for what had happened in Alaska. My boss saw it happen and got the guy's license number and the police had no trouble finding and arresting him. Now here's the thing, the sign said Exxon, but I didn't work for Exxon Corp. I worked for the franchise owner. However, directly across the street from the gas station was an oil refinery filled with employees of Exxon Corp any one of them would have been happy to discus the Valdez with him. When they heard what had happened, most of them wanted to talk to the guy anyway. I'd known most of them for most of my life because my dad was one of those Exxon Corp employees. None of them were skinny teenagers with a fake leg though. Maybe he just wanted a fight he could win. Of course even then he launched a sneak attack then split before I even knew what had happened. Perhaps if it had been a fair fight he would have discovered exactly how busy a one legged man in an ass kicking contest actually is.

Turns out the guy who punched you was a ghost, haunting the roads, punching anyone who doesn't put ghosts in their stories.

I gotta say, I’m loving the fact that not only are you on screen nowadays but how you’ve also start to illustrate for us as well what’s going on. Even though you always done well enough with just your voice to illustrate for me personally but I know some people aren’t like that, my fiancé sure needs that illustrations lol thank you for always finding ways to make your art form fit everyone’s needs, we appreciate you so much Lighthouse ❤

Fantastic story. It was funny without leaning too much into the absurdist comedy that Tales from The Gas Station uses, giving it a much needed identity of its own. I also love that a title for, what I assume will become a series, was established near the end. "The Gatekeeper's Apprentice" is very good.

I don't really care for ghost stories but it is 6 am, and I never wake up this early. For a ghost story if I may call it that- this was definitely more intriguing than scary. Thank you! Fiction or not, I wanna hear more!!!! Bravo!

I love your narrations, your characters voices, your ability to deliver the story in a way that draws me in w/you, like It's actually happening..I know that sounds weird but i honestly zone out when I listen to your videos and sometimes I actually will comment or yell at the character and that usually snaps me back to now. Thank you very much for your dedication and hard work to deliver the highest quality of narration or story telling on the internet.

Thanks luv! 😃✨ out of the many narrators who face the camera these days you’re only one of two I still watch because unfortunately the others just haven’t been able to pull it off and something was lost in the story telling. I enjoy watching you tell your stories and how you engage in them with facial and hand expressions. The little snippets of background animation is on point as well and fits the stories. So thanks for all your hard work and editing 🌹

Darcy writes so very intriguingly..so great story to begin with! But the reciting of the material is splendid, just splendid! Only one other person on KZbin does it as well, Mr. Ballin ! The best part of your recitation, is your ability to sound just like an old man! Thank you for a wonderful, wonderful time spent with you!!!
