The first sea trial of the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 to be known as INS Vikrant, last week has gone off well. In fact, it met many of the parametres way beyond expectations. The ecosystem that has been built up in terms of industries, small and medium scale industries is phenomenal. With over 76 per cent indigenisation achieved in building the largest ship ever built in Indian history, the residual expertise will come in handy for India's shipbuilding industry in the future even as the Indian Navy will have two aircraft carriers operating together for a long time to come again. In this interview at Kochi to Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, V Adm Anil Chawla, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy's Southern Naval Command, lists the advantage that such a huge project brings to the industry, to the navy and to India's quest for self-reliance in defence.

I am sure the Navy has whole lot of simulators on board and ashore to simulate operational situations, emergency preparedness, damage control, Captain/Command training, ship handling, electrical switch boards etc. Though these are expensive it is worth having them to train multi generational officers and crew. It is just an observation because on merchant vessels (where I am from) simulation is seen as an expense and not as an asset builder.

India should build a training ship solely for the purpose of pilots practicing take-offs and landings. It would have no maintenance facilities, no weapons, minimal crew, and only operate close to the home port. Pilot skills are very perishable and need constant practice. India should also build a training aircraft, again with no weapons, etc., purely for the purpose of keeping pilot skills up.

@@tyrantfox7801 sort of. Probably better to buy a fairly modern container ship from a Korean or Japanese yard and modify it. The ship would probably cost $50 million, the modifications several times that. Of course, India wants a commercial ship building industry, so the government could order several containerships from a local company and convert one when it is complete. In fact, India should ask one or two companies from Korea or Japan to partner with an Indian company to build container, dry bulk and liquid bulk carriers. Wages in Korea and Japan are too high for this type of commodity. Vietnam, Philippines, China, India are the countries with the right wages and skill base for standard freight ships.

Can we conceptualize platforms that can create a tsunami or large area disturbance (may be big brother of carpet bombing like tens/hundreds of sq km; generate whirlpool so large where big armada of ships are destabilized; create air tanks that attract all fire power of enemy and still fly; etc).. baby steps now, but in 20 years or so should start creating assets for these concepts

How difficult is it for India to make a Vertical and/or Short Take Off and Landing fighter aircraft? Can we make our future Twin Engine Deck based fighter also VSTOL capable? Perhaps, in the future, all jet fighters on Aircraft Carriers will be VSTOL capable. Why do the VSTOL F-35 fighters on British and US Aircraft Carriers not use their vertical take off and landing capability most of the time? They seem to use the length of the runway of the Aircraft Carrier for take off and landing, or am I mistaken on this account?

the kind of expertise we have developed in building INS Vikrant over the years ; in what way will it be easier to build up another, say of 65,000 tons, aircraft carrier in future? will it take same duration of time to build up that bigger Aircraft Carrier may be of similar or different design ? what is the crux of the problem India is currently facing in deciding to building up of the 3rd aircraft carrier which as per the navy is essential to meet the operational demand of the Navy. now the reason given by the navy conveys the kind of urgency that is attached for its induction over a duration of 7-10 years in near future. inspite of that the government is still dragging its feet to give Go Ahead signal. why ? is it purely the exhorbitant cost of the carrier that it asks for or some other reason that is not being revealed deliberately by the government ?

Initially it was mention that nevy leders were more visionary - Therefore what is there vision to move fight to south chaina see instead of Indian ocen in comming 20 years.
