Your conversation reminded me so much of Wordsworth - in the Lucy poem: rolled round in earth's diurnal course, in rocks and stones and trees... and 'River Duddon' he looks forward beyond the apparent vanishing point of death...seeing that our present contributions are not lost but can be seen as a service for the future flow of the life river... Still glides the Stream, and shall for ever glide; The Form remains, the Function never dies; While we, the brave, the mighty and the wise, We Men, who in our morn of youth defied The elements, must vanish, - be it so! Enough, if something from our hands have power To live, and act, and serve the future hour; And if, as tow'rd the silent tomb we go, Thro' love, thro' hope, and faith's transcendant dower, We feel that we are greater than we know.

When I was a child, I would read the book that comes w a tech thing. The TV had some FCC thing that said "the device must operate with interference". I didnt understand that until I was older. On the technical side, having a device that can deal with noise/chaos is dependable. On the human side, having a personality that can face reality as it is means you are dependable in your view of reality. The problem is that this society doesn't teach the importance of facing different ideas and situations. If you want to go martial arts on it, it's like we are trained to win fights, not to learn why things work this way or that way! Bruce Lee was one of those guys that really understood winning fights was not the gold. He was also not rigid in his style, despite being in a culture that emphasized sticking to one and doing it well.
