Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Күн бұрын

Iain takes to the skies and the road to bring us the latest Tyrrell's Classic Workshop video from California. He meets with the Zampolli family and discovers the amazing and extremely rare Cizeta V16T designed by Marcello Gandini and developed by Claudio Zampolli with music industry supremo Giorgio Moroder - initially as the Cizeta-Moroder V16T.
You may not recognise the name of this monster supercar from the late 1980's but you might recognise the styling, since it has some similarities with the Lamborghini Diablo that appeared a few years later and came from the hand of none other than Marcello Gandini. Join Iain to find out more and is there a possible revival in the future?
PLEASE NOTE
The video and audio quality is not up to the usual standards of the channel. Iain's usual crew didn't travel with him and unfortunately there were some problems with the focus and audio quality. We've tried very hard to clean things up but we hope you can look past that and will enjoy the very special content anyway.

I remember the spread in one of the car magazines in the late 80s about the Cizeta. The plug-line at the time was that Zampolli was the "mechanic of the stars" because he worked on a lot of celebrity Italian cars. A related story goes that Zampolli was the reason singer Sammy Hagar eventually joined Van Halen. They both had Zampolli as a mechanic. Sammy for his Ferrari and Edward Van Halen for his Miura. Zampolli heard that Edward was fishing around for a new replacement singer and suggested that Edward and Sammy meet since they were both in the music business and had a love for exotic cars. They did and the rest is history. Both Sammy and Edward told this story so it's true. Pretty cool rock and roll history tied to Zampolli.

I used to work for Mr. Claudio, I was 16… I’m 20 now. I would go and help him work on other cars he was restoring at his shop in Santa Ana, like his Alfa Romeo and a Mitsubishi that I scraped bad😅not only help him with his cars but also his everyday tasks, he was old and tired so I’m glad he’s resting now. 4 years later and I still remember the first $500 he gave me, after that I knew I wanted to make an honest living forever. This video of his shop is bringing back so many memories. Grumpy old man… Rest in Peace❤🖤

I met Mr. Zampoli with this very car around 2007 at Car's & Coffee" in Irvine CA. I was parked next to him in my wee Ariel Atom. We chatted at some length about his efforts to get the car legal in the US and I got the grand tour of the car and his design ideas. I had never heard of him at that time but remember him well as he was so enthusiastic and of course the specs and size of this car was off the charts. I also watched another of your episodes with the Urraco that brought back memories of me as an 8 year old (50 years ago) walking to school back in Scotland. There was a Urraco parked in a garden and the story was the son of the homeowner was killed in some accident. I watched that Urraco every day for years slowly deteriorate on my way to and from school, my nose pressed between the fence slats trying to see it closer. I used to dream about buying it and fixing it. Then one day it was gone. I've never forgot that car! Thanks for the memories:) and a Great video!

As far as I understand it, the Cizeta was actually very close to the original design for the Diablo back in 1985. Gandini had done the original design, but new Chrysler management decided it was too “Wild” and “80’s” to appeal to the masses, so Project 132 (Diablo pre-production nomenclature) was smoothed out and cleaned up into what we saw in 1990. The Cizeta ended up being Gandini’s original take on what the Diablo should have looked like had his design processes been completed at Lamborghini (he left in a fit after his original designs were smoothed out). The Cizeta is very cool and the story behind it is even cooler! Thanks for sharing with us this wonderful video!

Now days modern technology may be in the 21rst electronic & computerized century era, but I think that brilliant engineers like Claudio or designers like Marcelo so passionate with their "art" seem to extinct in our times. The only thing that this video's lacking is the music soundtrack of cams and valves that this magnificent engine sings. Think that it would sound like an Italian automotive opera. A great, unique material... What a beautiful, respectful conversation of experienced engineers. Currently, Mr Tyrell, you do the best job among engineering-based retro supercars channels. There is some magic in you stories, and in you beautiful english that I enjoy since the beginning of Tyrrell's Classic Workshop :) Wish you all the best - thank you very much !

The Cizeta Moroder V16T was always one of *those* car-nerd cars, in the best way. Up there with the Aston-martin Bulldog, almost as mythical as a unicorn. Seen in one or two glossy books, but never seen in the real world, you'd chat about it with your mates in hushed tones. I think at one point half my stash of obscure car facts concerned these cars! Fingers crossed that someone takes on both Claudio Zampolli's own car, and his workshop stock. Hopefully it won't just disappear into a closed collection, never to be seen again. In the rarified atmosphere of supercars and ultra-expensive metalwork, where $100M cars are almost everyday machines, actually owning this car would put you at the top of a very premium tree.

What a fabulous story! I remember these cars when I was a lad, I had a calendar of exotic cars and this was one of the months! I really hope someone with the resources can breathe life into these uniquely engineered beasts once again! And with the wonders of modern engine management, they could be even more ferocious!

I think my suggestion here would be to contact someone with stereo lithography equipment, and scan all the engine, exhaust, crankshaft, heads and smaller parts, car frames, cars in various stages of assembly, and his personal car when fully assembled. This would preserve for posterity all the parts and their assemblies in 3D, so that ANY part could be reprinted in 3D and used to re-manufacture those parts at a later date if necessary.

Thank you for bringing this to the general pubics notion and putting it out there for someone to take on this project. I am sure someone will come forth and take up the challenge of continuing with the building of this beautiful vehicle. Looking forward to seeing the progress and updates as it develops into keeping this legendary car in the public eye.

Tyrrell can build the remaining cars if someone can manufacture the parts and do the testing. Then they can be sold to museums and Saud. Job done.
