SNK is so freaking detailed! The Snow effects when you knock a character down into it was absolutely incredible for 2D back then! Then walking around in it actually spreads the snow back into the empty areas. Virtua Fighter had this level of detail as well but for 3D fighters. I gotta say though, Level 8 Kohryu in LB2 may make you change the title J lol

I can’t remember if this was true or not, but there was a rumor in the 90’s that SNK was thinking of making a King Of Blades game which was a crossover of SamSho and Last Blade. I tried googling it with no luck. So I guess it was just that, a rumor.

Kaede, Moriya and Yuki are basically adoptive siblings. SPOILER: the final boss of LB2 is their father figure. The reason most people only talk about LB2 is because Hibiki, who debuted there, is in CVS2. The reason for that is that there are far more Capcom fans than SNK ones.

It's hard because LB doesn't have a strong name as FF (franchise) or Samsho. Also let's not hide that people aren't going to rage when the graphics are revealed not to be impressive. LB and MOTW were technical marvels at that time when people didn't believe the NeoGeo, that was already a dated system, could be pushed further to that level. So getting a technically unimpressive LB release would hurt the game. Not meaning that LB has nothing great besides nice graphics (far from me to think that). Now for KOF it's less of a problem because people already accepted that its cheapness helped greatly to its survival. The game could only expand if the base was still recycled, and the ever bigger rosters make it harder to revamp the game completely.

If they wanted to make a new LB they could look to SS for inspiration for graphics. They would just have to tone down the colors and make it darker and I think it will work.

I've only really messed around with Last Blade 2. I'm impressed just how beautiful a lot of these stages are. Some of them are even better than LB 2, and that game has some of the best stages I've ever seen!

And they all have tiny details, such as kicking around snow in Yuki's stage, the ground progressively breaking up in Musashi's stage, Zantetsu's ship causing the camera to constantly bob up and down, different sounds effects depending on the type of ground when you run, etc. It's amazing.

Last Blade has always been a hidden gem at my side, hardly played at the arcades but when it happened, it really catched the eyes of a lot of players overall. Edit: The Yuki you mention from NGBC is NOT related to Last Blade's Yuki at all.

I love the little details like on Yuki's stage (her name is literally snow, so of course it has snow in it) the ground clears where the characters impact and slowly seems to fill back in with more snow.

I still remember playing this on PS1 and discovering Kaede's Awakened form by accident... playing KOF 99 too back then so I kinda knew SNK will place a special command on either ABC or BCD. That second super you pulled off (I think it was called Kasshin Seiryu) was done via qcf(2x)+AC. Speed mode works differently on this game too so there's also that adjustment from here to LB2.. Think custom combo from SFA3, that's the closest thing. Nice video Justin! Keep up the good work!

Samurai Shodown has always been my fav weapon based fighting franchise "its really the franchise that started such a thing" but i absolutely adore the last blade! I mean look at the stages! The art & the battle effects! Characters designs, i also love the lore in this! Its only two games but it has such a rich history to it, very fun and fast based combat too! I am happy SNK are porting these everywhere so ppl can enjoy them! one of fan favorites hibki is from last blade for anyone who doesn't know 😂❤ so many characters i love are in this series! i hope with SNK big plan for the next 10 years we got anything related about this title! Thanks justin for these sharing these classics makes me happy and reliving my childhood memories in the 90s 😭❤ hopefully you will do some runs in Samurai shodown games later 😂❤

I remember back in the day enjoying more the Last Blade 1 than 2, because no ones plays it and it have a far more refined Arcade Mode with 2 cool bosses. I love the series, for me one of state of the art of fighting games, sadly not played so much.

The PS1 port has 3 extra characters aside from the 2 bosses (technically 3, as Kagami’s 2 forms were split into separate characters due to restrictions), though they were just reskins of pre-existing characters: Bonta Akari (a tanuki taking on Akari’s form), Deku-no-Shigen (a golem copy of Shigen) and Kojiroh (the real one, who was killed by Shikyoh/Mukuro) It also had a fun little gallery mode and a cheesy, fully animated intro. Too bad that was never localized.

Used to pown players in arcades back then with Musashi. Darn guy is broken when you know how to parry air attacks. His dash attack cancel into Super is usually the finisher of choice.

The middle boss is a real man called Miyamoto Musashi. He lived in 16th and 17th centuries and he was the creator of fighting style with 2 swords. He is considered for many specialists as the best swordman ever had. The character in Shaman King was bases on him.

Last Blade is the pinnacle of SNK. Garou and this series was at a time when the NEOGEO was mastered and only a high-fidelity soundtrack could enhance them further. If they could have seen this in action when art of fighting was first released

Strongly disagree. The speed mode gives you freestyle freedom rarely seen in a 2D game. Stages look better in part 1 plus Musashi is playable. I think it’s also better balanced.

May be also make a top 10 or 20 obscure fighting games. And possibly expand on beat em ups as well.

Back in the days no one was doing combos in any fighting game. When killer instinct went out I was so upset playing it because of them. I felt they were super unfair and I still believe that :D. Played by you it looks a totally different game, a lot more balanced. That is probably due to the fact you know well how to approach it :)

nice combo. What kind of controller do you use? I have a razer panthera evo stick and the stock square gate on it is not to my liking. I tried a octogonal gate with a oversized acutuator and it made it a lot better. My issue is with the speed of the sanwau JLF lever and a stock actuator and square gate. I have to move the stick and turbo speed to do any simple combos and it is too tiring. Would a over sized actuator on a square gate even work? I have bough two different Sanwa JLF sticks one was the Mad Catz sfv te stick and now the razer stick. I have not liked either one really, just to loose and slow to be practical for me to use. I want to try a Hori Hayabusa stick next, since I have heard people who did not like stock Sanwa JLF's with square gates , really like the Hori sticks a lot more. A regualr controller or octoganl gate with kowal acutuator gets the job done at least. Hoping you could recommend a Sanwa square gate mod or set up that could help me enjoy square gates. I grew up playing circular and octo gates in the arcades, and always really liked them. I am going to take my stick apart, and try an oversized actuator with the square gate. If it is not good, I will just switch back to the octo gate with the kowal actuator and leave it be.

The art style is almost identical. Mukuro from the 2nd game is pretty much just Shishio, and Setsuna, also the 2nd game is just straight up Aoshi.

The game's story is set at just before Rurouni Kenshin's story is set. See that Washizuka guy? He's basically a Saito Hajime reference. Speaking of Bakumatsu era games, Like A Dragon: Ishin's coming out later this year.

O The Last Blade '1'' é o melhor da franquia , 1° as fases dos personagens são incriveis (destaques fase do Kaede com árvores de bordo e o túmulo do seu 'pai', e fase do Okina cheia de detalhes). 2° O segundo jogo desabilitou todos os combos do Kaede deixando ele só com combos basicos a-a-b-b.... 3°Cada pesonagem além de ter falas específicas com outros personagens, teem ainda mais variações dependendo de como venceu a luta, pouca hp, muita hp ou cortando ao meio. 4°O balanceamento do segundo jogo é assim todos os personagens tier C pra baixo..., Moriva tier B,, Lee rekka tier A ,,Zantetsu TIER DEUS . 5° A Yuki morre porque sim e é isso .. Caso do tinha tudo pra ser 1 jogo perfeito mas aconteceu alguma tragédia.

Those games are deceiving because they look modern and when you see modern SNK sprites, the first thing you think is Garou Mark of the Wolves or maybe even Real Bout, which were easy to play against the A.I, Last Blade however, does not f*** around, from the first fight you have it's difficult as hell.

My favourite game,I like it better than lb 2 because it's way more fair when fighting the A.I I play it at lv8 and can beat it easilly,but lb2 I play at lv4 and sometimes doesn't go past stage 6 pr rival stage,and only beaten the boss once.
