Yeah you're supposed to. It maximizes hits for certain special attacks. But it also has become a player conditional habit. Button mashing can sometimes even cause character glitches that work in favor of the player.

I just swap iceman in for rogue against the perpetual up back players and hold block while punishing unsafe calls. You don't learn much, but it's fun watching people run away until they lose. Wish iceman had more supers like a Storm hailstorm or something. He's one of the few Omega class world destroyer mutants or whatever.

It does in a few cases. I think Doctor Doom is one of the prime examples of that.

Mashing will help a lot with multihit hyper combos. If you watch him commentate some MvC2 tournaments (like the Tampa Never Sleeps tourney a few weeks ago) where he points out how little damage supers do without mashing.
