Easy Lathering Tutorial with Stirling Soap Company Soaps

Chris, thank you for this video...I've been wet shaving for 40 plus years and lately I've been struggling with shaves thinking it was the blade or the razor...I just shaved about 3 hours ago...went back to the den after watching this video and lathered some Stirling Executive Man and completed the shave I should have had a couple of hours ago...now I have to go back through razors and blades I thought didn't work for me and try them again...I'll test it again, but come to find out, I've been rushing my lather and not getting it hydrated enough...just shaved with a razor I thought was doomed as well as a blade and surprise, it was a perfect finish...thank you for your dedication to this hobby of ours...I've been with you through the low and the high times for at least the last 6 years and I appreciate where your are right now...thank you for your dedication and perserverance...it is appreciated...watch every video and it makes my day better...thank you, thank you, thank you sir...may your day be blessed!

Excellent tutorial. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge and your experience. I’ve been wet shaving for almost two years now and I have problems sometimes with some soaps because my skin is really dry. Seeing you doing your lather, it is clear to me that I don’t use enough soap and I don’t hydrate it enough. This weekend, I’ll take the time to play with those soaps that I have problems with and wipe up a lather just for fun to tweek my technique. I will also be mindfull not to splay my brush to quickly and see if there is a big difference with what I do normally. Who says that a (over fifty years old) man can not have fun with soaps :)

Thank you so much for the comment Elie. Definitely take time and play around with the lather to see what works best. The #1 area it can falter is not using enough product. After that, it's either not using enough water or using too much. Experiment with it and see what works best for you. And yes, a 50+ year old can still have fun with soap:)

I like the way you mix up your shaving soaps and paint it on your face. I used the distilled water and it didn’t look like your lather. I think I need to Blum my shaving soap with hot water to soften the soap before I start whipping it. Great tutorial video on bowl lathering shaving soaps.

Thank you for that advice. Even though I have 3 lathering bowls, I would always lather from the tub. Using your instructions, I much thicker snd richer lather. I initially added to much water from the tap, but just added a little more soap and was able to work up a decent lather. Again, thank you for the video!

ahhhhh, nice! If you're not accustomed to bowl lathering it takes some experimenting to figure out what works best in your conditions. This method works well for me with about 99% of the soaps I use:)

Thank you for the tutorial! I'm able to get it looking like how it does on the brush, but when I apply it to the face, it looks very transparent and dries on the face very quickly. I don't splay the brush pretty much at all, and I add water slowly as I build the lather. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong, so was wondering if I can have some tips? I am able to get a good lather through face lathering so I know it's not a problem with the soap or the hardness of my water (wanting to switch to bowl lathering as I've found that face lathering leads to my face being irritated). Thank you!

It's not required at all but some folks like to do it. It can help some with a hard soap.

I ended up with a airy lather with A&E today.. I must have splayed to aggressive and worked it too long. Revised this, if they were a olympics lather olympics you'd win, but only one time, lol because you showed all us traditional shavers how to replicate it!! I can do it and it's identical results! Synthetic brushes are king, period!! BTW - going to treat myself to another one, still using the one you gave me, I may email you and get some recommendations, if that okay.

That could have happened Mike. I try to never let it get to that state. I go pasty then add a little water, pasty, add water. I repeat that process and never let it get airy.

Hi Chris, Great tutorial mate! I have recently bought Stirling "Baker St". Really nice with a really fresh scent. I find building a lather in a bowl or on the face really relaxing and a great part of the shave. You explained the bowl lathering process really well in easy to follow steps for anyone starting out and using a quality soap. I did a face lather tonight just for the hell of it, with A&E So Cal Hipster. I shaved last night so no need to shave!! It really relaxed me after a very busy day trying to get the Theatre I work at ready for touring shows again. First in are Disney rehearsing the Lion King before they go on the road with another tour. My shave last night was super smooth using my new Tatara Masamune •63 with the open comb. I bought it with both the open and closed combs. I used A&E St.Barts soap. Keep the great videos coming Chris, I really look forward to them. Take care and stay safe Sir, Dave.

Starting off with Stirling it's pretty hard to mess up. Stirling is like the honey badger of soaps, he just doesn't care. Hot water, cold water, hard water, little water, lots of water....it's always easy with Stirling.

I got the 300th like on this one! Thanks for showing the method you use. I have been doing something similar but I think where I've been going wrong is splaying too early and not adding enough water. I now have a better idea of how much water to add and how to manage the brush. Good stuff!

Awesome Eric, I'm so glad to hear it. I've been making more hasty lather due to lack of time recently and you know what I've noticed? Not a darned thing. Whether it's a show lather or just fast serviceable lather, the result is the same. So it's nice to get that show lather right but it's also good that it's not required:)

@@IAMCDB that's very interesting to hear. I hadn't considered the product of this video as show lather but I suppose you are probably correct. I have noticed a difference when using lather made this way so there are probably varying degrees of hydration, with a certain minimum providing 90% of the beneficial properties of any given soap and pushing beyond the minimum doesn't result in significantly better performance. Science! Lol.

Got my Starter kit from Stirling in today. Completed my first safety razor shave and... No Cuts but the razor burn on my neck is atrocious! Just the water rinse felt like aftershave burn... the Alum Block set my neck on fire and then the aftershave burn was pure torture lol. After watching this video I clearly did not come nearly close enough to enough hydration. Can't wait to try it again but I think my neck will take a couple days to heal up :)

Hi Chris, If you were lathering up a triple milled soap such as a DR Harris Arlington or Marlborough would you still use this bowl method by scraping the soap into a bowl, or would you lather directly from the soap puck due to the hardness of the soap like I saw you do for the Mitchell's Wool Fat video? Hi Martin. In this case I'd cut a sliver off and put it in the bowl. I have a lather tutorial where I do this with Col Conk. Col Conk is a pretty hard soap:)

Did you use Stirling soap if yes add more water. Stirling soaps are extremely thirsty and can tolerate a good amount of water

Have been a huge fan of Stirling's aftershaves for years now they're amazing all day scents that I'll wear as a cologne splash as well. I only have one of their soaps which I purchased from a vendor years ago and it didn't work well, always created a super dry lather and caused a lot of drag and cuts. I assume it's from the vendor not storing it correctly in their warehouse and it drying up so I never use it. I may have to grab some directly from their site like I do with their other products and give it a go again.

They make great products. If you lather the soap well it will definitely produce a high quality lather that's very slick.

I always head lather and I have been experimenting with different hydration levels and I have found that if I go over the tipping point and ass too much water I get a lot of skipping and bouncing leading to sub par shaves. I may try this method to see what happens because why not. Tomorrow is another day.

You can definitely go too far to the point where the lather breaks down. I like to try to push to the edge of that without getting into that zone:)

In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" (Mitchells' Wool Fat based tallow soaps or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. Stirling shaving soaps are so soft. Blooming is not needed. In any case, the bloomwater became part of the lather so none wasted.
