You didn't improve the dust collection system, you created a vacuum that blows the dust out of a hole in the wall. How much saw dust is in that bag right now? Close to none I bet. This isn't how a cyclone dust collector wotks.

I dig the video and project, but Feet per minute =/= CFM. Your FPM from the anemometer of 6163 is demonstrating the velocity of the air, but CFM is volume. When converting this to CFM it would be 537.8 CFM if that was a 4" hose, 840CFM for a 5" hose, and 1,210CFM if it was a 6" hose and same velocity. Also the ability to suck up the bag demonstrates the static pressure of the fan. By removing the filter, your really reduced the restriction in the system and it's create a strong vacuum. These HF dust collectors really move some air once unrestricted. You can do a homemade manometer to see how strong it really is at the end of the hose. This is also how HF games their advertised CFM by measuring without the Y adapter and no backend restrictions. You hard pipe some 6" pvc while blowing outside your really gonna move some chips Also as a side note for those considering this, if you heat your shop, your gonna be exhausting all that warm air out this winter. Edit: spelling

You're right about the heat. Air conditioning is the bigger issue where I live, which I mentioned toward the end of the video. All I really care about is how much dust it will pick up, and it seems to be doing that pretty well, but the truth is that all I can say is the anemometer read over 6,000 CFM. As it's only rated for 5,700, I feel like a bigger fan could have shown a high reading, but it was enough to tell me there was a lot going on.
@Mark-jd1fr
@Mark-jd1fr 2 ай бұрын
@@worstworkshop You're not understanding the reading on the anemometer- as the commenter pointed out the device reads speed not volume- it is not reading cubic feet per minute.Put that anemometer on a hose from a shop vac and you will probably get a similar number or higher.
@MrDaneBrammage
@MrDaneBrammage 2 ай бұрын
@@worstworkshop an anemometer does not measure CFM. This is like sticking a ruler in a bucket of water and saying that the water came up to the 3 so it must be 3 gallons. An anemometer measures air *speed*. You can see on the screen that it is measuring feet per minute. CFM = cubic feet per minute. These are different units. You have to multiply ft/m by ft^2 to get ft^3/m. The guy above has done the math correctly. That looks like a 6" duct, so you're actually getting 1210 CFM, slightly less than the rated 1500 CFM, which makes good sense.
@worstworkshop
@worstworkshop 2 ай бұрын
@@Mark-jd1fr I understand what they're saying. What I'd need is an anemometer with a 4" fan to measure it properly. The point is that I'm not trying to prove scientific principles here. I just wanted to see what was happening.

Nice job! I recommend discharging outside like you have whenever it's practical. It wasn't for me, but I have the same H.F. Dust collector and did a very different mod. I upgraded the fan blade, rotated the housing and increased the fan inlet diameter to 6", then I increased the flex tube between the fan and the cyclone to 6" ( my cyclone is a Super Dust Deputy and my dust bin is a 35 gallon stiff white plastic barrel) I removed the 4"round/rectangle flange from the fan discharge as it's a restriction, I can reuse it for something someday! My fan discharges into a filter box with Merv 13 filters. I used one of those remote RF devices to stop and start it. It moves a ridiculous amount of air! More than my meter can measure on a 4" opening! It has exceeded my expectations.

I would recommend putting a dust deputy (XL) atop a can and in between your 4” hose coming from the blower… no plastic bags. And get your hands on a new pleated filter for the HF dust collector from Wynn Environmental. I did that years ago and used 4” PVC, it’s been a joy to use. Also, there is an impeller upgrade for the HF/Central Machinery 2HP dust collector. Oneida has an awesome Dust Deputy Cyclone and steel drum combo that I used for my modifications. Well worth it. Also Grizzly has a copy of that system… a steel drum and cyclone combo (it also has wheels 😂) I can tell you how you can get about 1000 more CFM airflow… racing stripes and flames painted on the blower.

A Dust Deputy is too small for a 1-1/2 horse (it's not really 2 horses or you'd be overtaxing the 20 amp circuit, at times, such as when the filter bag loads with dust). I ran a 1-1/2 horse Jet (cartridge filter, so far better air flow) through a Super Dust Deputy and it worked wonderfully.

My 2hp dust extractor is in my loft of the workshop. Hose comes down the wall and into a big 100mm port cyclone with a steel drum under it. The cyclone drops the power quite a lot, do you think if I was to also mod the extractor it would increase the suction through the cyclone????
@worstworkshop
@worstworkshop 2 ай бұрын
I'm not an engineer. But you get more power with more airflow. If you have the same one I have, the most orthodox way to make that happen is by replacing that big cloth bag with a better filter You might spend a couple hundred bucks, but it should give you more suction. You could also vent outside like I did, but there are a couple of drawbacks. 1. You're sending your heated or airconditioned air outside with the dust. 2. You're shooting dust everywhere. There are certainly ways to mitigate that. I live on a few acres, so it's not a big deal for me.

@@worstworkshop No, as it is the same as what you just built, a regulation of the stream, but still with the blower fully powered - IMHO, the price of an electronic regulation could be rapidly erased by the power economy induced, especially if you often run the vacuum cleaner at its low. Wonderful video, I love the simplicity of it instead of having the stuff you usually see on youtube where even simple shop projects look better than most furniture in my house. With regards to the overpowered fan, can't you reduce the speed of the fan instead of having a gate to block the airflow? I've got a similar (albeit 3-phase) fan around here hooked up to a VFD with an air quality sensor hooked up so it automatically ramps up/down depending on the air quality and that works brilliantly.
@worstworkshop

I considered that. It's just 120V 15A, so I could have used a rheostat. But I figured it was better to use it as intended, which is full speed motor, limited airflow. Thanks for your kind words!

You went from a dust collector to a vacuum that dumps straight outside. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the exhaust point. I'd put a cyclone before the vacuum to catch a lot of stuff. There was an old house vacuum design that used water to collect the dust. It worked so well that the Navy used them or a system based off of them to purify air. Maybe look into that. 30s and 40s tech for the win.
@worstworkshop
@worstworkshop 2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't want to be near the exhaust point either! The system you're referring to is Rainbow. I actually had a segment on that product in this video, but realized it was kind of a rabbit trail, so I cut it. And there actually is a cyclone. The Thien baffle was to separate the cyclone from the bag, which actually captures almost all the material. It's only the finest particles that go outside.

If you want to make an actual double-digit improvement and as others have already stated move to a cyclone separator. That will get you well into the double digits of filtration improvement and also help keep your CFMs loose to a minimum. Do the google and you will find lots of info on the topic.
@worstworkshop

Thanks for your comment. The Thein Baffle relies on cyclonic movement to work. The difference is that with a traditional cyclone, the large material spins down a tall funnel while the smaller material floats up, and in the one I have, everything spins around and around in the same circle. The heavy material falls near the edge of the cyclone, while the lighter material gets picked up and ejected.
@mjjeanson
@mjjeanson 13 күн бұрын
@@worstworkshop Actually a properly tuned cyclone will be 99.99% efficient in dust removal from the air stream and be able to separate large blocks down the very fine dust at the same time were as the Thein will only be able to separate material down to the width of the side slot and will leave the big chunks on the top of the filter plate. You will also realize only a ~20% loss of CFM verses a Thein can cut your CFM by 50% or more. Look into ether adding in an internal down tube into your cyclone outport so that your air draw is out of the center of the cyclonic action further down the cyclones length thus improving the cyclonic spin and reducing top side bypass. Without going into the design and math look at commercially designed cyclone like the dust deputy from Oneida to see what I'm guessing may be missing or not properly in place in your cyclone. You know your pumps CFM thus you will be able to match the properly sized cyclone. In the multiple systems that I have used and setup for others we are now only taking out our fines from our filter boxes every couple of years or so. In your setup that will not be necessary because you have eliminated that stage in your design by exhausting directly to the outside. Good luck Sir.

When you revisit this project as you have replied to someone below, check the fan curve of your fan set because this fan set will be designed to achieve a certain extraction volume at a certain pressure with the motor that's fitted. Changing any of these 3-parameters will change the characteristics of the fan for example if you increase the pressure on the fan the total volume will drop along with the electrical load on the motor, conversely if you reduce the pressure resistance on the fan like you did by removing the back pressure as it no longer blows through the bag filter the total volume will increase along with the electrical load, this may then require a larger motor. However after watching the video once again I notice at the end you restricted the air flow into the fan. The anemometer was reading 1634 feet per minute so in actual fact the power of your system is worse than when you stared off with. From experience I would expect the velocity of the system to be around 4000 feet per minute because that is the "normal" velocity carrying velocity for wood dust and should not fall below 3000 feet per minute as a minimum otherwise you will start getting dust settling in the ductwork. Hope this is helpful.

Your calculation of CFM is incorrect. You have to divide the velocity of the flow by the the area of the tube in square inches by 144. It looks like you have a 6" tube so the area of the tube is 28.27 Sq inches. CFM=Area X Velocity. Area = 28.27 / 144 = 0.196 Sq Ft. CFM = 0.196 X 6000 = 1178 CFM. Loss in the tube and the inefficient terminations on the intake and exhaust would account for the 372 CFM loss you observed.

You can achieve the same thing by plumbing an auxiliary exhaust tube from the blower directly outside with a blast gate in between. Then you could adjust the amount of back pressure to increase the vacuum. You can put a smaller filter trap between the blast gate and the outside exhaust so you don't let particulates escape into the wild. Think of it kind of like overclocking a CPU...and by that I mean it could have all of the sames risks if taken too far.

I built one of Thein's dust separators on a steel garbage with a whole house fan a year after he designed his. Worked great with the table saw and now I use it without the fan, it's used with a Dewalt 375 Planar that has it's own blower. An easier mod for your CM dust collector would be to buy the rigid exhaust cage for the Jet DC1100 dust collector. I can't just dump the exhaust DUST out to the neighbors. Instead of the Thein separator, I added a lid from a wok mounted dome up on the underside (picture where your hand is a 3:37) with about 3/4 in clearance. The lid is an 1in+ larger diameter than the opening. It works great. Jet finally upgraded theirs a year or 2 later. Check ou the DC-1100VX-CK Dust Collector,they call theirs a cone.

I’m sorry but this video is misleading, you haven’t actually increased the power of the fan, all you have done is reduce the pressure resistance of the system. You haven’t increased the volume to at least 6000 cubic feet per minute as you have stated because the meter is displaying speed not volume in feet per minute, hence 6000 feet per minute through an area of a duct what looks like 4 inches diameter equates to around 500 cubic feet per minute. When extraction engineers design an extraction system they take many factors into consideration including the static pressure of the system and extraction volume. What you have done is to reduce the positive pressure at the outlet side of the fan thereby increasing the volume of the fan, the problem with that is (which you didn’t check) you have inadvertently increased the electrical load on the motor probably above it’s “full load current “ capacity which may lead to burning out the motor. As we say in the uk “you don’t get ought for nought “ . Indecently in industry you are not allowed to discharge dust like you are doing straight into the atmosphere.

Thanks for chiming in! You're of course right about the motor, but I wasn't intending to mislead anyone. I'm talking about the power to collect dust. You raise a valid concern about the load on the motor, and if it ever burns out, now I'll know why. But I know this exact thing has been done by many other people, and I've never heard of a reported failure. Time will tell the tale. I'm less concerned about the environmental impact. The minimal amount of completely biodegradable sawdust I produce would end up exposed in a landfill anyway, where the wind would carry it to wherever it will. In the end, I'm not an engineer. And while I'm far more concerned with results than terminology, I'm really interested in what you're saying, and your comment doesn't fall on deaf ears.

I also made a Thein separator, but put mine in a steel garbage can. Works great. I used it with a 1hp Central Machinery blower, and it worked fine for my saws and routers. Then I got a 12" joiner and planer. It simply couldn't move enough air, so I kept getting buildups of chips in the flex hose at the joiner and planer whenever I was milling bigger stock. I added another matching blower in parallel, and now its unbelievable. No clogs, and you can see the stream of chips flying through the hose. I also dump the air outside. No filters to clean, and no worry that I'm breathing in the fine stuff.

I spend a lot of time in ISO Class 2 and Class 3 clean rooms where we manufacture implantable medical devices. The cleanliness of our air is critical. One thing that struct me about your set up is- where is your return air coming from? When you recirculate air that you are filtering, you just keep cleaning and filtering the same air until you get it "really" clean and dust free. In your case, you are pulling unfiltered air in from *somewhere*. If you want to really nerd out about it, you might want to acquire a particle counter to measure the air quality of your shop while you are making and exhausting dust. If you measure before, during, and after you will see what kond of impact on your environment. You can get all the nay-sayers you want, but it's much harder for anyone to "Well, actually..." you when you have good data. Also, then you'll know how well the thing you did worked. But of course, then you are going to walk around your house (and outside, and everywhere) looking at how dirty the air *is* and you might be a little concerned... :) Good job on your hack, and man that has to feel good when your kid shows interest in somethinf you love! @@TNH91 I thought about that too, but I'd still have to have clear trash bags to avoid messy dumps, and then the trash bags would just get sucked up into the dust collector anyway. I may do it at some point anyway, but that's why I went this route.

@@worstworkshop I saw a version that had some reasonably stiff while still flexible material so it could be bent to almost a cylinder that was placed inside the steel barrel to hold a trash bag in place. Essentially you would have the steel barrel, then place the trash bag in the barrel, then the "liner" inside the trash bag. With the liner being smooth so it could be easily removed before taking out the trash bag itself, and stiff enough that once it's bent one way it becomes implausible to bend another way in addition. Another option is of course to have a smaller "bucket" with a funnel from the top part so it's easier to dump out more often.

it is no longer a dust collector. It is just a vacuum with direct dump to outside. 1. if you have large chips, they will plug that screen outside 2. you could have dust buildup outside, which may be a problem 3. if you want a true dust collector, you need a solid container before the fan to withstand the vacuum. This is why you typically see cyclones on top of buckets, trashcans, or barrels. 4. you could still do #3 and exhaust the fine dust outside to keep the restrictions low. You're basically removing the fine dust filter restriction while still actually collecting the larger chips and dust.

What engineering? His CFM is right around 510CFM, which is actually kinda low for the rikon impeller mod. An anemometer doesnt measure volume, it measures speed- you have to calculate the CFM based on the cross sectional area of the end of the hose your using. People have been doing this for years, and my system gets almost 900CFM since I piped it in 5" rigid, not flex, port outside after it goes through a cyclone, and have a steel trash can as the dust recepticle.

If you were to check the AMP DRAW and the RPM on that motor then you will discover that you have changed both. By restricting the air flow INTO the blower housing, you are changing the force needed for the motor to spin at its designated RPM. This will shorten the life of the motor, and could actually cause it to trip a breaker. Ever notice how a shop vac sounds when you put your hand over the end of the hose ? When the RPM goes up, the AMP DRAW changes as well. If you cover the end of the hose long enough, it will cause the motor to fail. An electric motor has a specific AMP DRAW. Anything that changes THAT, is going to shorten the life of the motor.
@cos6907
@cos6907 2 ай бұрын
In actual fact it’s the other way around, by reducing the resistance to the fan (as it finds it easier to blow the air as there’s no back pressure) the motor will spin more freely and draw more current
@klave8511
@klave8511 2 ай бұрын
In even more actual fact, the current drawn by an electric motor is defined by the torque it needs to supply. The voltage sets the maximum speed at which it will run. So, less air moving, less current, more speed and better self cooling. This happens when it can’t move air because the airflow is blocked. Just to prove it to any non believers it tested it on my small shop vac (yes I know the motor may be different but it doesn’t change the principle). Full airflow the power drawn is about 507 Watts. Block inlet, power drops to 386W. Block the outlet, the power consumed drops tho 401W.

@@cos6907He would have been much better off to just run the hose through the wall and leave the blower and housing in the correct place in line. This motor is not designed to be in this position . It isn't designed to be a vacuum cleaner. It is designed to be the first to receive the material and then send it out. It is designed to build static pressure as it runs. The amp draw change that he has caused, added to the rpm increase is not a great idea.

@@worstworkshop Sarcasm. Nice. I am an HVAC tech with 20 years experience with electric motors and equipment. I believe that if you place the blower back BEFORE the collection cylinder then your motor will work as intended. Perhaps you could build a hinged wall around the dust collection system and have a smaller fan blow the dust (coming through the filter bag ) out of the hole in the shop wall. I think that the device you made for collection separation will work better with the blower PUSHING the dust into it instead of trying to pull dust into a flexible bag. In my opinion it is never going to stop trying to pull the dust OUT of the bag. And it is definitely going to harm the motor by running it on the improper amp draw.

I think it's an elegant solution to an annoying problem. The only thing I'd do different would be to mount the whole collection system outside and have a flex hose coming into the shop. Quieter and you gain a significant bit of floorspace. You might have to protect it with a roof or even a small shed but look at it as an opportunity for more woodworking!
