Has anything broke with this setup? Ive never seen a subaru with a locking diff before
@SubaruOffRoad4 жыл бұрын
Didn't break anything with that setup. However I recently increased tyre size to 235/75r15s and started breaking rear axles very regularly (average 1 per trip). Nothing broke with 215/75r15s over several years so I will be going back to smaller tyres soon.

How is this possible on a manual transmission? I was told that the Subaru forester with manual transmission had only viscous center diff. Am I missing something, can someone educate me?
@SubaruOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
This car has been modified to have a locking centre diff (DCCD). However the viscous centres are actually pretty good and you would likely get just as far or very close with a stock transmission. It is the rear locking differential that makes all the difference here. This car also has a front LSD (not stock) but its not a very good LSD, but it may have helped a tiny bit.
@gabrielbarreda223 жыл бұрын
I see, you have more information on how you accomplish the option of locking you center diff? That was the only reason why I went with an 2003 forester automatic transmission because of the viscous center diff to fail in extreme situations in the manual transmission of the same year forester
@SubaruOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielbarreda22 To be honest I abused the hell out of the manual viscous centre and never had an issue. Yes they slip a bit with a wheel lifted but they always keep you moving. Autos centre diffs will also eventually fail when put through abuse and leave you with front wheel drive only. I swapped in a DCCD (driver controlled centre diff) from a 5spd STI RA box. You swap the diff and transfer case housing and they bolt straight up. Just hard to find a DCCD.

Nice job Dedman ! What did you expect from the rear difflock ? Did you think that it would have made this uphill easier or are you impressed by the result ?
@SubaruOffRoad6 жыл бұрын
Pretty impressed with the result. The first section which the open diff couldn't get over it just walked through. The only problem is if you have a front and a rear wheel lifted you only have one wheel driving the car. If the front has to climb over something that one rear wheel likes to just spin if its slippery. Still worlds better than any other rear diff option though.

Looks like articulation/suspension travel was the limiting factor.

Kuhmo AT51s and 16PSI
@MrScalman6 жыл бұрын
Subaru Off-Road so they are not best AT tires and not for mud at all. I think with more agresive tires and more power you could just fly up there much further. It depends how you look at it.
@SubaruOffRoad6 жыл бұрын
Not sure about that. I wasn't limited by speed or power. That was as fast as I wanted to go with due to the roughness. I used to run good MTs, they help a little but not by that much, especially on super slick clay like this was. For offroad the Kuhmos are as good an AT and any for grip IMO. Fairly certain with muddies I would have had the same result.

I suppose from now on you follow this recommendations www.arb.com.au/assets/air-lockers/6-01.pdf This system is quite similar to Dangel differentials activated by depresion using the brake booster vacuum pump. Like any other locking of the rear differential - Rear differential locking must be activated only on grounds with poor traction. - Do not use the locking mechanism on ground with good traction, especially on turning. - Do not engage the locking mechanism when the wheels are slipping. - Engage slowly at the 1st restart. - Unlock the differential after crossing the difficult area. - Unlocking may not be instantaneous.
@SubaruOffRoad6 жыл бұрын
Pretty basic really. Engage only when wheels are not spinning and don't have it engaged on tarmac. Nothing else to worry about...
@insidebyte85616 жыл бұрын
Awesome :) you should make it higher with bigger wheels tho :P

Would have to be a fair bit bigger to make the difference. I personally like good gearing so have little interest in increasing in size.

Right. I had thought these were to improve offroad ability. I am no planning to do lifted coilovers and maybe big sway bars with quick disconnects.
