he didn't mention it because it defies his definitions, it is obviously more like a classic, however it still has microtransactions. Helldivers 2 is a masterpiece, its gameplay is better than most titans and arguably most classics, it doesn't rely on microtransactions like titans and instead it relies on its game play. but a classic doesn't have microtransactions which means it can't be that either, obviously it's not an application or clicker either. Helldivers is Helldivers, in it's own little category, better than any titan or classic could ever hope to be. FOR LIBERTY, DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM AND FOR SUPER EARTH!!! anyway great video

What really needs to be analyzed is the Roblox top player chart. It’s wild. The top one has like a million, the second top will have like half of that and by the time you get to number 6 it struggles to get over 100k. Deep Rock Galactic has one of the best battlepasses I've seen, since you can play any battlepass that was released from the very beginning, they have only cosmetics and skins and after the battlepass is over, all the items are transferred to the ingame store that are available only for the ingame currency and chests that are frequently found within game. The only DLC's for the game are founders packs, dropped very infrequently which are direct ways to support the game in exchange for some higher quality skin sets.

Sucks to see that warframe wasn't mentioned as a classic cuz in my opinion it checks all the boxes that a classic game has. It has devs that listen to their players and also interact with them, all of the content is free except for skins that are made by the community where profits from them go into creators pockets (from how I understand it), it is a singleplayer/co-op game, you can buy premium currency but it serves more as a donation to devs rather than a necessity to make progress + it can be earned for free through trading where the market isn't controlled by devs but by players and it has a welcoming community. In early stages of the game it may feel undewhelming when there is not a lot of things that boost your dopamine except for world building but when players stick with it they are rewarded with experience and freedom that no other game offers. And once you complete all quests and every mission you unlock steel path which is basically a new game+ where you do all missions again but with more difficult enemies. It also has characters each with unique kits and gunplay is phenomenal. Certainly a game which stood a test of time without implementing predatory strategies and keeps their playerbase by updates and dev streams where they also give away premium currency. Sorry for a lenghty comment and if you managed to get to the end of it thank you for reading my tedtalk ^^ (english is my second language so sorry for any grammar errors)

While the devs have gotten a little... odd in recent times, they surely supported the game fully for longer than most of the "classics" even existed. Most people don't even know it's been over a decade since the first version of the game. And it almost always got better than the way it was. Not to mention you don't need to even pay a penny to get premium currency if you really like the game and play it regularly.

I know of a game with an actually good battle pass design: deep rock galactic; the battle pass is free, with no paid tiers, when the "season" ends you can choose to replay that season and battle pass whenever you want. The "replay season" feature is somewhat new, before that, the loot would simply go to the random loot pool. Everything in the battle pass is cosmetic. The paid dlcs are also only cosmetics, generally with a specific theme related to the current season, and you get everything upon purchase.

not to mention most of these other classics see more gameplay updates than cs sees new cosmetics i swear they release some new skins like every 2 years meanwhile games like cod are just pumping out weekly cosmetics. ofcourse skins are a big part of cs now but its quality over quantity in their case they somehow stumbled into the perfect way of introducing cosmetics into their game. and like 99% of the degens gambling with the skins don't even touch the game itself they just use it as a tax free way of gambling.

The game in the top100 that I play most is Geometry Dash. I have hundreds of replays of it on my channel and I just can't stop playing it. When I watched your video I tried to fit it into the categories you listed, and found it difficult to place it. The thing about GD is that the official game itself doesn't really have much content. At its core it is just a random mobile game from the early 2010s that got popular randomly. It is developed by one guy called Robert and doesn't have in-game-purchases. It only costs like 4$ and Robert took 7 years to release the recent update. So how is it in the top100 then? Well I think it isn't for the same reasons another "Classic" like Stardew is up there. The gameplay is similar to little rage games like the Impossible Game and is really really challenging. What really drives its playercount is the community, how else could it have gone 7 years without an update? The level editor in this game is probably the most open for creativity, unlike others, which has led the community to create over 30k dev-approved levels. Basically, infinite content. If I were to make a category for it, i'd call it "community-driven" Funny thing, during the update drought the player count only grew and didn't decline

Yeah I think we need another category for UGC (user generated content games) where most of the content is provided by user generated stuff. Think Fortnite (creative) Roblox, vr chat, raven field, basically any paradox game with a popular modding scene, tabs, tf2, and more. They can all go into some category (mainly titans and classics) but the games mainly thrive off ugc from either modding, or through a creation area made by the dev.

@@iAmLufa Those 20 hours barely scratched the surface. Did you join a clan? Did you trade your items you got in missions for platinum to other players? Did you even open up any void relics to get prime parts to trade? Those are the most sought after ones. You can get enough prime parts in an hour to trade for about $5-10 worth of plat to another player. More if you're lucky. What about corrupted mods from Deimos missions using the Dragon Keys? Those go for about 5-10p each and you can literally get one every 90 seconds if you use a fast frame like volt or titania. I've got 3k hours over roughly 7 years in Warframe and there's absolutely zero instances in which I felt like the monetization was predatory or scummy ever. It's the gold standard for what games that you called "titans" should do, but won't because it's not as profitable. It player-centric. Hell, I spend money on WF as a thank you to the devs for the countless hours of fun and free content because I feel bad getting all that I do for free. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean that the whole game is bad. Frankly, it's better than most of the games in the top 100 but most people drop the game before they learn enough about it to really see all it has to offer, like yourself.

If I spend money on such things, I accept that the money is just gone. It's like going to see a movie or concert; you pay for the ticket, you get entertainment in return, and that is it. i agree with most of the things you say in this video, however for the titan games like cs2, fortnite, and others, i would say battle passes and microtransactions are not the reason people play the games, me and my friends have tons of hours in both cs2 and fortnite but rarely wasted money in the game for cosmetics, we play them for the gameplay and mechanics of the game, and because of the big competitive community surrounding those games, maybe the more casual players play the game for that reason? Your correct about new seasons / maps in the games tho, the new content makes it so that people stick to playing the game therefore making it more adictive.

TF2 is kinda funny because it introduced modern microtransactions and all that, but they are out of the way enough to where you can just play the game as an F2P or spend a grand total of 0.99 and chill forever playing the game

Played over 3,500 hours in tf2. Had a friend who was over 10,000 hours. Played 3,000 hours of Binding of Isaac between the original flash game for almost 1,000, and over 2,000 in the remake. 700 hours in Age of Empires 2 700 hours in Don't Starve. Over 100 hours in just Half-Life, replaying it over and over. Thousands of hours in Final Fantasy games, between discs and at least 1,000 hours on Steam.

I feel like titans explanation is missing the point that those games have become inherently massively competitive. If you’re a rank gamer who likes a competitive scene then those games are probably for you. Same with fighting games, the gameplay is a big part of it but the dopamine is from conquering your opponent. Being the best or seeing the victory/KO screen. Not just skins like you’re pointing out solely.
@julianbrown4371
@julianbrown4371 12 күн бұрын
This is where the divide seems to happen where A LOT of people become burned out and just don’t like the competitive scene. Which is fine lmao. Whenever I get tired of R6, The Finals, Marvel Rivals, or Apex I hop on BG3 and do another run. Maybe I’ll download mods for Skyrim and do a run of that. Skins is a part of it but it’s really not the main reason people play those games.
@Beep477
@Beep477 5 күн бұрын
@@julianbrown4371 I agree, I feel like this guy’s entire argument doesn’t really make any sense at all. The “classic game” analogy he uses doesn’t work because that’s simply not what “classic” means, he instead should have explained why the games he liked in the top 100 were instead classics to HIM and Reiterate his own opinions instead of treating his views as objective. Also Multiple points he made to further his argument didn’t make much sense either, he stated that cosmetics and seasons are the only reason those games are consistently in the top 100, which in itself is incorrect. The competitive scene alone in those games makes them huge and those “seasons” often come with a lot of content to accompany any cosmetics. That introduces new players and keeps player counts high. That’s how live service games work. He can’t reinvent the term “classic” as a roundabout way of trashing on games HE doesn’t like, along with literally lying about what makes the games he doesn’t like popular.

Good video! I do want to say that for me and many others, grinding ranked can be a lot of fun. I don't get too worried about my rank and stats, and I like looking at my rank as sort of a skill assessment(I am very driven by improvement in many of my hobbies). Getting skins for rank placements are like nice little trophies I can feel proud of and look back on. I do totally agree that ranked skins only usable during the current are lame as hell. I don't want this comment to sound negative, just wanted to share my perspective !! :3

Age of Empires 4, Civilization 6(7 on the way soon), Your Only Move Is Hustle, literally any classic fighting game because fighting games are more about mental stack than people realize. Hunt Showdown is more about outsmarting people than having god aim because the win condition isn't kill everyone. XCOM 2 (without save scumming), Portal 2 (and billions of workshop maps), literally any version of Tetris... the list goes on and most of these are modern titles. It's not like people stopped making games that provide a mental challenge. But if your purpose to play them is to feel smart and rub yourself to the idea, you may very well not be as intelligent as you would want to believe.

Ignoring the obvious fact that competitive multiplayer games have infinitely more replayability than solo games by design is not helping your argument. I fully agree with what you are saying but really dislike this kind of omission of causal effects to tunnelvision on a single narrative, because it serves no purpose other than to provide an extremely easy refutation of your entire point.
@iAmLufa
@iAmLufa 13 күн бұрын
@@rbze7255 yeah of course, point is many players aren’t coming back for replayability. They return because of incentives outside of gameplay. That might not be the dominate reason why for everybody, but there’s certainly been a trend

13:39 titans as you called them, are also competitive, balancing is much more of a deal if its players vs players and a metch takes 90 minutes and the player is messured based on their skill but also based on the balancing on the game. The game isn't about being fun completly anymore its about trying to one up each other as the players, being better than everbody else, its about skill first and foremost not against predetermined enemies but against other players. That is why balancing is so hard, you can't make it easier for one group of people without making it harder for the other group of people. In games like Terraria you only have to balance it against single team of players. People don't complain more in the balancing of titans because its worse but because its harder to do by its nature. Titans don't opimize for fun but for a balanced battlefield.

In fairness I think CS2 is so dominant because it has both a “dopamine hack” skin system but also incredibly tight and masterfully designed gameplay. It gets the best of both worlds. CS could drop all the skins tomorrow and it might lose some gambling addicts but would still maintain many players. It was already an upcoming esport in previous iterations that lacked skins.
