People seem to be more tribalistic than ever. Often, there are two teams, and you’re either with US or you’re with THEM.
And if someone from our team joins the rival team, boy we hate them even more than our enemies, don’t we. The word “TRAITOR” seems to roll off our tongues a bit easier these days.
And sure, most of the time it just seems like there are TWO teams, but within these two teams there is an endless amount of smaller teams. The number of people we identify as part of our team seems to be shrinking. The number of enemies we have? Well that seems to be growing. And we seem to hate our enemies more. And while our teams used to be more aligned with families, nations, countries, or religions, now our teams are more aligned with political parties, universities, neighborhood associations, media figures, or even Discord servers. This realignment has even caused family members to not talk to each other anymore. We have splintered so much that it’s even difficult to find someone to date on one of those dating app thingies.
And while the political divide in the United States seems to get all the attention these days, I argue that this is a much more systemic problem.
So why do we no longer have anything in common? In this video, I will tell you exactly why we no longer have anything in common, and I even got some insights from Dr. Sam Richards, the brilliant sociologist who runs the famous SOC 119 class at Penn State that has quite a KZbin following as well.

@@iammrbeat before watching the video here I think we could all overcome this issue by accepting one thing which is understanding that this is your first time living and existing and my first time living and existing along with everyone else in the world currently living. No one is a true “expert” on how to live life like this is literally our first time as an existing society dealing with certain things in our current timeline that may have been dealt with in the past but we don’t know the true way they handled them except by what was written down. @@iammrbeat Maybe it is just my own social circle but I never seem to see any insults on any platform and I regularly have disagreements constantly on platforms against my own. A while back I went on r/christianity as an atheist and ended up having a very respectful conversation on abortion that left with the other person changing their mind. I feel it is intellectual to pretend that this is a new view when most folks tend to hold it. The problem with holding it is that you end up going into conversations with the assumption that it will end terribly and because of that it feeds onto itself making problems worse and worse.

@eazydee5757
@eazydee5757 10 күн бұрын
True, but I would say that few people talk about the factors in which social media became so big in the first place. For example, see the mass suburbanization of North America. Before suburbanization, the majority of communities tended to be tight-knit and strong, people had a strong sense of solidarity towards on another, and supported their local businesses, whose reputations were based on their status in the community. Then with car-centric suburbia, society began to slowly atomize. Now people had to drive everywhere and own a car just to participate in the wider community. This can be a very tiring thing to do. The power of small local businesses were replaced by corporate chains, whose reputation is built on the sake of being big instead of their reputation and how well they serve their community. Independent and non-profit news outlets were being gobbled up by massive corporations that twisted the news to be for-profit and with blatant corporate agendas. Later, the internet came to connect already-divided communities, and along with it came social media. The for-profit model (promoted by capitalism) of many social media platforms incentivized them to generate negativity for the purpose of more clicks and engagement which would benefit the platform owners and advertisers by creating more profits for them. But I think the biggest overarching reason why we have such a huge divide, comes from alienation, which is a feature intrinsic to capitalist societies. People in general all over the world are often left feeling powerless over their lives, having lack of control over their destiny, reaping none of the benefits they work for, unable to gather in public spaces due to financial constraints, and are made to feel very lonely due to the hyperproductive mentality promoted by capitalism that does not create a healthy relationship towards leisure and work. But I believe that for real change to come, we must do away with the current system that we have and replace it with a more beneficial system that benefits everybody in society rather than just a small group of select people.

@anoukk_

The reason media companies profit more off anger is not directly because of the anger it's self. It's because they profit off of engagement. It does not matter what that engagement is and what causes it. As long as someone is engaged they stay on the platform. They don't care what people are feeling while on their platform as long as they stay on their platform to be advertised to. A very good way to prove this is that rage bait content simply works. A lot of creators intentionally leave a mistake or something frustrating in their video without acknowledging it. They do this in order to get people to engage with the video by correcting their mistake while not realizing the creator left it there on purpose.

@@jeremyjackson7429 I don’t disagree with that, that’s all a system is is the results of human action. But being ruthless or divided amongst civilian lines doesn’t further any positive cause. I don’t believe a majority of the people who perpetuate these systems (outside of people in the government themselves and lobbyists) are doing so intentionally. If you’re not born in a relatively well off family making a life for yourself has been getting increasingly difficult for decades. I can’t blame someone in the current conditions who takes a job that furthers these systems when usually they’re taking it to survive, and feed their family and usually don’t even know what they’re doing is harmful. Especially when They would probably research a lot more if they didn’t have to work 40+ hours a week to survive. Or if it didn’t cost 10s of thousands of dollars to get an education. Or if news networks actually talked about things like their inability to get by instead of the latest culture war issue. The way I see it the system whether intentionally or not has created a situation where so many people would take any job they can get, they don’t have time to properly understand the political landscape, and if they try to they likely aren’t media literate, and then we blame some of the people being fucked over hard by it instead of the system itself. Not to mention the effect it would have if there was less division around social and wedge issues and patience to explain these things to people who are genuinely being used by politicans who benefit from the division. The republicans wouldn’t able to win an election nearly as easily just on making up random numbers of immigrants to claim are committing random crimes while giving billionaires tax cuts. The democrats wouldnt be able to win elections nearly as easily simply by being 5% more humane on these issues without offering actually effective policy that makes them less money such as healthcare for all.

We’ve always been divided. It’s just that there’s never been another point in history where all groups have had equal access to platforms to voice their opinions. People look back at the 1950s and say “well look we all united behind Eisenhower” or 1980s with Reagan. But the truth is during that time there was intense and overt voter supression and control of the media by a select few. Now it’s never been easier to vote (despite best efforts by some to make it not so) and everyone has a voice online. Polarization isn’t new, it’s just not had this environment before.

Well to be fair this is pretty much true for quite a few european countries, specifically germany due to the parties having to form coalitions while governing. The main political forces in the CDU, the SPD, the Greens as well as the Libertarian FDP have all had more than 8 year of being part of the german government in the 21s century and in the past two terms since 2017 all four have been part of the german government. And most issues in Germany like Inflation, a housing crisis, unregulated mass migration, and the retirement funds not being sustainable have either been caused or not adressed by anyone in government despite all of them having a say in how the country is ruled.

I was told(I was too young to remember) that after 9/11 there was a moment where all Americans felt unified through the tragedy, and were there for each other. It was the opposite during the pandemic… everyone was at each other’s throats. Identity groups and social classes were blaming each other. Everyone felt like nobody was listening to the lockdown rules, conspiracies were rampant. There strong distress was a distrust of both administrations and their ability to handle it. Nobody believed what the other was saying, and if they did the information would just change a week later. If we had treated this as a unified nation under threat, I feel that things would have been better. If everything said here like social media and identity politics, the wealth gap, etc. led to this division, should we consider these things a threat to national security?

I think it's important to note that, like Mr. Beat said (in not so many words), traditional media has turned our anger into a profitable commodity. However, this newfangled social media has done the same. When you consider anger as a commodity, it is easier to produce and sell than cheeseburgers. Knowledge, enlightenment, happiness, comedy, fun... all of those things are way harder to produce than anger, which is why it isn't such high supply. So, as we are scrolling through our social media feed, and stopping to interact with a particular post (either by commenting or looking at it too long), we should really think how we are feeling and who is benefiting from what we feel. Personally, when I come across something on the internet that makes me feel angry, I try to block it and give it a "dislike" if I can, even if it's something I agree with. I just don't want anyone profiting from my anger. On the other hand, some creators attempt to profit from our attention in a more positive way, like education (Mr.Beat) or making us happy (Mr. Beast). This probably explains why there are millions of KZbinrs in gaming chairs doing angry rants, but there's only one Mr. Beat. Happiness is actually more profitable than anger, but anger is just easier. That stuff, I always like and subscribe to. Anyway, I have never experienced a single benefit from my own anger, and I don't want anyone else to benefit from it either. 🤷🏾‍♂️

It can be tricky to navigate the conversation in a way that avoids hot topics but it helps train me to keep my ego down and most of the time the person I’m talking to tells me how refreshing it is to have a conversation where we can disagree without getting angry

I think there's something to be said about the decline of social institutions I mean by that are major rules like marriage, volunteerism, labor unions, Church, life time in one workplace, even participation in political organizations. I'm not saying that all of these things are bad things like divorce has helped liberate a lot of women volunteerism is often used substitute for needed policies, well I think labor unions should research they did contribute to inflation in the 70s, religion is a should be very personal thing, and not all political participation is healthy. But at the same time I think that the decline of these social structures in becoming a more liberal Society has come at the expense of American citizens being more respectful of others with differing views since they don't Cherrish and abide by similar social moras

Good comment. I disagree on your religion opinion. Religion shouldn't be forced. One can't impose on anothers heart and it is counterproductive to the good of the soul of either the target or the evangelist take the route of conversion through forced compliance. It is however a social thing to be shared and those called to a faith are often called to share it beyond the place of worship. There's nothing wrong with Catholic Charities running food banks because of the call of their faith, or more contriversial political speech members of that faith take peaceably protesting executions and outside abortion clinics (I picked these because all are tied to the Catholic views on supporting life). Nor is it wrong for a Mormon to knock on a door and ask to have a conversation in hopes you'll be open to their message. The limit, for me at least, is that the people exercising their religion don't push past the bounds of others rights.

True. The root behind all of this is the profit motive and growth mindset that pervades the current economic system in which we call “capitalism”. The main goal of capitalism is to make the biggest profit and create constant growth. The general media industry’s first priorities are not towards connecting people or entertaining people, but to make profits first and foremost. To make a large profit, the media industry must incentivize stories and narratives that create a load of controversy. That load of controversy creates negative attention, and that negative attention leads to lots of clicks, and the advertisers supporting them making a lot of money. Let the cycle go on and on again while growing your media empire larger, and voila! You get an extremely divided and toxic public that has no sense of community or solidarity with each other. That sort of explains the situation that we can see happening right now.

I agree with most points. However, I have some contention with the "shared values". In my opinion, values have to applied to everyone. Otherwise, it wont actually be a "shared value". For example: The left: "Everyone should get healthcare (even those who are against me politically and may wish violence upon me)." The right: "'Everyone' should get healthcare (except for those we do not deem as people- and especially those who actually want healthcare for everyone)." Even though it seems both sides value healthcare, in reality, only one side actually believes that _everyone_ should get healthcare. In practice, it is the tried and true "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" for me, but not for thee.

@@Lack_Of_Interest I think Republicans would be much more in favor of a government-subsidized healthcare system as a fall back plan if those on the left hadn’t destroyed the idea of community. The news just broke a couple of days ago that Springfield, Ohio, a city of just under 60,000, has had an influx of illegal Haitian migrants numbering 20,000 and they are eating any animals they can get their hands on, including pets. These are illegal migrants let in by the Biden-Harris administration with the end goal of destroying communities. They don’t want immigrants who adopt the local culture. They want to change the demographics of entire areas with the goal of staying in power, at the detriment of the Locals. Republicans have become the party of the working man who wants to be left alone and likes their way of life. They want their way of life to continue and does not want to see monumental change inflicted upon them by authoritarians in Washington D.C.

So this is just my personal opinion, and please feel free to agree or disagree with my take, but I would say that few people talk about the factors in which social media became so big in the first place. People in general all over the world are often left feeling powerless over their lives, having lack of control over their destiny, reaping none of the benefits they work for, unable to gather in public spaces due to financial and social constraints, and are made to feel very lonely due to the hyperproductive mentality promoted by capitalism that does not create a healthy relationship towards leisure and work. But I believe that for real change to come, we must do away with the current system that we have and replace it with a more beneficial system that benefits everybody in society rather than just a small group of select people.
