Hi all, I hope you enjoy the video. A lot of people have pointed out that it seemed like a lot of work for 1 night....and they would be right 😃 . This was a site that we had been planning to prep for a while. Now that we have the stakes planted and the site prep done, future visits there will be much simpler and faster. The 12 x 12 Atuk Kanguk tent design requires a center pole and 10 tie outs so unless you are surrounded by trees, you need to have to plant stakes for a good uniform setup. I will say that I love this tent and would highly recommend it but know that unless you bring stakes with you, there is some work involved in a first time setup at a new spot. Cheers all!!

I would like a little info about the sled please. How much did it weigh, how hard was it to pull, how much faster did it burn up your energy/fuel and how much more did you have to eat to compensate from the extra expended effort? Thanks for the great video!

When i watch these videos it brings back the days when i went camping for 3 days, not over night like everyone seems to do. Sleeping was in a 2 man pup tent with tree bows for a bed and for air to circulate, WITH NO STOVES just a good quality army special sleeping bag. You hung your socks (wool) outside so they froze & in the morning whacked them against a tree slid them on and warm feet all day. Cooking was an all day outside fire, not indoor comfort. You left a boy came home a man. Those were the good ole days

It is great for a while until I wake up and my stove went out and like my cot is under water that is not very warm. It is cold in the morning with all wet clothes too. I think a floor would have been a help. I miss the little trailer i sold to my friend sleeping next to my tent in it.
@IamOutdoorsy5 жыл бұрын
Hi brianbirc. That sounds like a terribly cold way to wake up. I feel for you. While I usually wake up while winter camping roughly every 90 minutes, I do set an alarm to make sure that I wake up at least every 2 1/2 hours just to feed the fire..

Please excuse the Aussie ignorance of not understanding snow but how is it so toasty warm in the tent and the snow not melt and become a wet pool ?
@IamOutdoorsy5 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, I apologize in advance for the long winded answer 😄. On a multi-day stay in the hot tent, the snow would all melt. I can't say for certain but here are the reasons that I believe why it doesn't melt quickly. 1. There is a deep layer of frost in the ground. This keeps the ground quite cold even with the nice temperature inside the tent. 2. When initially setting up, the ground gets trampled quite a bit so the snow on the ground becomes very compacted and takes longer to melt. 3. While it's much hotter near the top of the tent, the temperature significantly drops as you go lower. Since any snow melting away does it slowly, most of the water just drains into the ground. That said we did have one experience where due to an ice storm, we set up on quite of bit of ice and did have a lot of water in the hot tent. Still had fun 😄 Cheers!

I have wondered each time I watch a video where people sled in, why they just don't bring a small chain saw. It would make processing wood so much easier and the added weight would be nill since you have a sled.
@IamOutdoorsy5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, While we do have a chainsaw (ours uses rechargeable batteries), I seldom bring it along. While the sleds make things easier to bring extra gear, it can be a bit exhausting pulling the sled when having to go uphill. The extra weight and bulk of the saw can have an impact. That said, it would definitely makes things easier and quicker at camp.

Hi MrSrtman18. The first time it takes about an hour and a half, couple of hours if you factor in digging out if there is deep snow. However when we return, the stakes will already be there and so will the center pole so really might take about 1/2 hour if that. Not too bad to be nice and warm in the middle of winter.

I used the same spark arrester and it plugged up causing creosote to drip all over my brand new white tent. After the crying stopped I quite using it. I switched over to a larger hole screen type that sits like a hat over the stove pipe it allows for lots of air and no plugging - No rain cap but it hasn't been an issue. For all of the hot tenting videos I've seen you guys are the first to talk about wet wood. . . glad I'm not the only one

Great video, thanks for posting! It was great to see the setup of a Kanguk. I just received my 10x10 and used it for the first time the other day. I didn't think to put wood poles for the higher up loops, that's a great idea. I also had the same problem getting my Knico Trekker going. I couldn't find much wood that wasn't wet/frozen. It dropped down to about -15C. I had the spark arrestor because the wet wood was sparking quite a bit and I was worried of ruining my new tent but it looks like from your experience maybe taking off the spark arrestor is what it would have needed? Needless to say it was a very chilly night and the tent maybe only warmed up to 10C for an hour before the fire died off. Anyways thanks again for sharing!

Thanks Kevtown Outdoors, Definitely a wet wood problem. We've had the stove burning really hot in the tent on previous trips with the arrestor in it. Hope you get a chance to head out again soon. Having the wood stove burning well makes for an incredibly enjoyable experience. Cheers!

I wonder if it's possible to have the center pole but maybe put it's base towards one wall and then have an exterior guy line pulling it the opposite direction from it's lean? That would seem to leave enough ground on the far side to get some warm snuggly action from the old lady! Just saying.....I can't camp without snuggling with my wife....

Actually, you could put 2 sleeping pads side by side behind the center pole. We couldn't because the ground wasn't too level on that side. Only down side is you'd have to get out of the sleeping bag to feed the fire at night. I usually sleep in front of the stove, that way I can reach the stove and wood pile without having to get up at 4:00am 😄.

It may be worth it to build a small shed type building to protect your firewood in the future. ✌️

how come you do not clear all the snow off where the tent floor is going to be? any reason for leaving all that snow on floor?
@IamOutdoorsy6 жыл бұрын
Hi Josephine, if there was a lot of snow on the ground we would clear a lot of it out. However given our sleeping setup, a little snow on the ground is really not a problem for us. Cheers!
