When two benders of different elements have children, those kids can inherit either element or none at all.

When it comes to the difference between elements, they each have strengths but Bending is a martial art with various styles. No one element is stronger than another but Benders can be affected by environmental circumstances. It comes down to the skill of the individuals wielding them.

Remember, the war has been going on 100 years. Originally, the fire nation attacked unexpectedly, giving them the upperhand. Then they just continued to ruthlessly attack the other nations for the next 100 years. Thats why the population ratio is so drastically uneven, their numbers have been dwindling for a century.

All Airnomads when born are airbenders aswell. Next in line Fire, majority of the fire nation are firebenders. Then its about 50/50 with the water tribes. People that are more UNLIKELY to get bending are the Earth Kingdom People, majority of the earth Kingdom people are none-benders. Hope this solves the question you had about benders in the universe!

A child of two benders could be one of those two elements or even a nonbender. Your parent's having bending doesn't guarantee that you will have bending and even if your parents aren't benders you could still be a bender as long as there are benders in your ancestry. It's basically genetic so you can only be born a bender of an element that one of your ancestor's can bend and the closer it is to you directly the more likely it is. In this world at this point in time there are basically no marriages outside of your own nation so usually this isn't something that you would encounter. Also that wasn't Aang. Won't say anything else for now so as to not spoil anything but yeah that was not Aang you saw there.

1. The kids can only inherit one element or none -> non benders. 2. The legend of Korra takes place after Aangs time (not really a spoiler) :)

When two different benders have a child the child can get the other element or none. I think the probability to inherit bending can also depend on how spiritual the parents are. All the air nomads had bending since the air nation is so spiritually connected. Also LoK is a good sequel! But when you thought you saw Aang in the trailer it wasn’t actually him. For there to be a new avatar the previous avatar has to have died. Avatar reincarnates to the next element in the cycle.
