The lead singer Maynard James Keenan has mentioned in multiple interviews his voice is another instrument, they do not have a lead singer he is “their” vocalist. When he performs it’s mostly in the back, the music when mixed puts him in the middle or back and instruments up front.

In the 90's I think TOOL was know for their out of the box music styling mainly, as the discography evolved so did their message/music/and general.band persona...in my opinion

The 3 instrumentalists write and perfect their parts together and the pass it to Maynard who writes around the instrumentals (not to them) and becomes the 4th instrument. He has two other bands he fronts for (Perfect Circle and Puscifer - both fantastic) and being more in the background in Tool is intentional. Finish Undertow and move to the next album. I love Swamp Song ❤
