"drum selection is something you really can't skimp on and it's something you can't really teach" is the realest shit. when i listen to my old beats from 2011 i be a lil salty cuz i had some real decent chops but half the time i was using stock drums bc i ain't know any better. or random, very raw breakbeats without knowing how to mix them.

I have tried making beats like Premier, Pete Rock, Dilla, etc to get an understanding of their process and possible mindset behind their creations. Duplicating what was done will NEVER be like the original, but definitely a great way to gain some experience behind creative processes. Personally, I can't listen to any of their stuff b/f I go on my MPC as it messes up my mental (I find myself trying to do what they did at that time and it kills my flow). Premier's drum kits are iconic. Back in the day, when you heard a new cut on the radio, you could instantly recognize his hard hitting kicks and snares with his signature swing timing. And almost all the big names in the 90s worked with him at one point. Moment of Truth was my favorite album when i was a teenager, and I still own the clean edited version on CD so I can listen to the songs just like I remember hearing them on the radio. Check Premo's channel if you haven't yet, he breaks down the history behind his classic beats, he still has everything saved on floppy disks and he is saluting the floppy, plus the Akai samplers and drum machines. So 🔥🔥🔥 keep working at what you love, sista!

D.j premier used an mpc 60 mk2 for all his beats in the early 90's and late 90 's that drum machine gave drums a texture that was hard to duplicate the snares were super crispy and kick drums and sub samples were super beefy, I remember reading in an interview that he used drums from the emu planet phat a tone module but the swing of the MPC 60 was undeniable that's what gave the beats the flavor for some reason the mpc 3000 and the mpc 60 were the only akai machines that had that swing the roger Linn editions

Just for anyone interested, I'm pretty much certain that in Premo's original beat that sample you're calling an electric piano is actually not an electric piano, pretty certain it's actually a clavinet. That super funky keyboard instrument Stevie Wonder used a lot that has that plucked sound (because the reeds inside the keyboard actually do literally get plucked when you press the keys down). Technically it is an electric piano because it's amplified just like the fender rhodes and wurlitzer, but when keyboard players refer to the electric piano they most often mean the rhodes and wurlitzer, never heard a clavinet called an electric piano. Anyway, just wanted to clarify that for anyone interested.
