Ian Bailey died 'a lonely and sad individual' whose life was destroyed by the Irish State, his solicitor has said.
The 66-year-old collapsed and died yesterday afternoon in Bantry, Co Cork after a suspected heart attack.
Mr Bailey became the chief suspect in the murder of 39-year-old French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996.
Ms Tuscan du Plantier was murdered outside her holiday home near Toormore, Goleen in Cork on December 23rd, 1996.
Mr Bailey was arrested and questioned twice by Gardaí about the murder but has denied killing Ms du Plantier.
He was convicted of her murder in absentia in France in 2019 and sentenced to 25 years in jail However, the Irish courts refused to extradite him.
Ian Bailey's solicitor Frank Buttimer told Newstalk Breakfast he was in touch with Mr Bailey as recently as last week.
"All very, very unfortunate I have to say; he died a lonely and sad individual whose life was destroyed as a result of what was done to him by the Irish State," he said.

Not to mention the 5 bar gate which had blood stains on it which mysteriously vanished . You don’t lose a 5 bar gate unless you want to! There was blood on the gate , you can clearly see it in the crime scene photos , my guess is, there’s Sophie’s blood , and blood belonging to someone other than Ian Bailey.

He was already convicted in the court of public opinion (as the guards like to do) so if the guards had any evidence at all they would have brought him to trial and got a conviction. So they had no evidence at all against him. That makes him Innocent. I strongly suspect the truth of this is in France. Sophie came here alone because people close to her cancelled at the last minute. That is strange to me, to leave a loved one alone at Christmas and why then did she not cancel and stay in France for Christmas with those close to her (she was said to be very popular) instead of coming here where she would be alone---or would she be alone here. Did she travel with someone or meet up with them at the house. There was two used wine glasses at the house. Did the police examine them for DNA. The so called female witness who years later retracted her statement was a nutter according to her close relative that I spoke to.
