It is an endless discussion, but IMHO Gillan was the best DP spin off band in the late 70's/early 80's. Better than Dio-era Rainbow, better than classic Whitesnake. I am not saying that Rainbow and WS were not amazing bands, they were fantastic, but Gillan was even better.

Yet most people I know if you ask if they know Rainbow or Whitesnake, it's Of course! But if I ask if they know Gillan, Who? Isn't that the guy from Deep Purple? Definitely the most adventurous of the 3, SabuPtolemy! Kudos for that observation & statement!

The Gillan band was my favourite from amongst the DP family. In fact I was initially unaware of the relationship between Gillan, Whitesnake and Rainbow, and only discovered the connection when the album Deepest Purple was released in 1980 (being 13 at the time). Only then did I realise that all these great guys were once in a band together called Deep Purple. And for me Mark II DP were the epitome of perfection. and dreamt they'd reform one day.... the rest is history.

Ian Gillan is mostly known for all his albums in Deep Purple but his work with all his other projects are worth to check out and explore. I am not saying I love all the songs and think they all are on par with Child In Time or Lazy but there is good songs to be found all over the place (from all records). Recently in 2018 he has done a new album with the band "Ian Gillan & The Javelins".. Very different from Deep Purple but some might like it! Take the time to find your favorites!

Townes and Torm'e had something special going on and they didn't get the time to hit the heights it could have, a real shame because that lineup was and looked different.I never understood why Ian didn't fight for it more i mean he must have had some sway in the music industry ex purple and all that, i think he just found it all a bit to hard and just wanted to fly under the Purple banner forever, Blackmore having success with Rainbow and the other half with whitesnake maybe pissed him off, but that's my point i don't think he believed in it or himself enough.

"Of them all, this is my favourite". 'Double Trouble'? There was an interview in Kerrang! when the album came out, that started with Gillan throwing a tape of the live half of the LP out of his car window on the motorway 'cos he hated the mix. If memory serves, he described the sound as 'like a hippo wallowing in shit'. Still, the studio half contains some of Gillan's best songs - I love 'Restless' and 'Born To Kill' - even if the running time is a bit on the low side.

Ian Gillan was my favourite vocalist growing up as a kid, such range, control & power in that voice. I went off into Punk, but as soon as these albums came out, l bought each & every one. Still own them & play them. Such fantastic musicians. I loved Bernies guitar sound & his look. A great under rated band who produced such an eclectic mix of great songs.
