Invaluable aide Ian. Wrestled with the fact that the rod ended up lower than I thought it would if staying on plane. Then I realized that it was on plane, just the fact that the plane was in a downward trajectory, not out toward the camera. I still have problems with my line hooking and wavy after the delivery. It seems when I do put out a good one, it was because it had a lot higher line speed. Thanks for teaching me not to push out with the top hand, it seems odd at first, but when you think about it , it probably hinders the bending of the rod.

not a beginner Ian, just trying to improve. Can't get my forward cast to travel above the line on the water. Always to the left a few feet. Trying to figure this out. Enjoy your head-on camera position. Tried a 6-7 line on my 13.5 7wt. Loved it, don't know if I would have ever tried a lighter line if it wasn't for one of your comments on lighter lines.

Hi James, there could be a few reasons for your line staying slightly to the left. I'd need you to post a video for me to look at your hand positions during the loading of the rod on the forward cast. Once you learn to use the rod to its maximum potential then casting a light line is so much fun, also very good for fishing, especially in the summer.

Hello Ian. You mention rod tip path is absolutely critical, witch it’s related to the 180 principal if I understand correctly? My question please, what’s the best way for a beginner to master the 180 principal? Im spey casting in the surf 9 of 10 outings. For me was probably the most frustrating part of the all casting principals. What’s your best suggestions to reach the best practice or technique to build up the memory muscles with enough consistency to master a 100% rod tip and line true alignment before the forward cast?
