Sir Robert Buckland, the Conservative's former Justice Secretary, has lost his seat, in Labour's first gain from the Tories in the General Election.
Sir Robert, who previously held Swindon South with a majority of over 6,000, lost to Labour's Heidi Alexander.
Labour won 21,676 votes, with the Conservatives second on 12,070. Reform UK were third on 6,194. This marks the first Labour gain from the Tories this evening.
Sir Robert has held the seat since 2010, before which it was a Labour constituency for several years.
He hit out at his Conservative colleagues in the wake of his loss, saying: "I've watched colleagues in the Conservative Party strike poses, write inflammatory op-eds, and say stupid things they know they have no evidence for, instead of concentrating on doing the job".
Ian Hislop provides his analysis of the 'decimation' of the Tory Party as the results come in.

The Tories should have lost every seat in the country. That they came second is a testimony to how poorly informed a vast proportion of the country are.

This is a singular step in the right direction. Let's not get complacent now. Labour need to be pressured to deliver the change they have promised.

I can’t believe working people have voted Reform. They really need to look up the plans Reform have for the future of worker’s rights in this country.

Nobody is mentioning the absolute sea-change in Scotland... although an SNP backlash was expected it wasn't expect to the decimating extent it got!

14 years of malfeasance, corruption, under investment in public services, austerity, the erosion of civil liberties, economic incompetence, and outright bonkers right-wing policies has finally had time called on it all.

Deservedly an awful result for the Tories but Labour won by default rather than acclamation. They need to deliver if we're not to have a big swing to the far right at the next election.

The Tories lost this election, virtually all by themselves!! The public rightly have decided they have had enough of the Tory exceptionalism, incompetence & corruption. Let's hope having some adults running the show, promising to put the country ahead of party, can start to repair 14 years of damage?!

Personally i am surprised the Tories have ended up with 120+ seats. I would have liked the Liberal democrats to have edged the Tories into second place so they could form the opposition leaving the Tories and Reform on the outside. In 2010 Labour got kicked out and rightfully especially after the Iraq war but these last 14 years the Tories have broken the UK and bad decision after bad decision have destroyed the dreams of the working class. I left secondary school in 1999 excited about my future looking forward to college and university and i had many many dreams and ideas but from the Iraq war, the banking crisis in 2008 under Labour (not their fault), the destruction of our infrastructure and NHS, Brexit and Covid and now corruption and cost of living and housing crisis I've been hit time and time again and im worse off than when i was 22 when leaving Uni. When I left uni i had £18,000 in my account and 2 jobs, also i was taking 2 foreign week holidays a year as well as 2 weekend city breaks. Fast forward to today aged 41 im in overdraft and seeing my wages and disposal income decimated. F@@k Blair and the Tories!!

I once saw that someone had vomited their post-pub curry & chips on top of a dog poo on the high street. Even that pavement was in a better state than the Tory party
