Ian McShane's story about the "rich guy in Norway - Mr. Meyer" is true: in 1978 Norwegian police raided a property owned by Meyer on a tip that booze was being made there without permit (moonshine) - the day after this police raided his home and discovered a secret bunker (entrance behind a fireplace that had a hidden remote controlled machine gun and surveillance camera) with weapons of all sorts and ammunition enough to arm a company of men. It turned out that Meyer was a former intelligence officer and was involved in NATO's secret Operation Gladio "stay-behind" operations that were prepared in case of an invasion and occupation by Soviet forces.

Yes, I remember Lovejoy. I would think he'd be known for his stage career over in the UK nowadays. He is an amazing stage actor, and has done some popular plays over there, and here in the US on Broadway.

Not everyone's goal is Hollywood. He has a long, succesful career outside Hollywood. Hollywood is glitter and glamour. It's PR marketing. I mean, look at the Oscars. A bunch of people patting themselves on the back, picking winners based mainly on reasons completely different from actual acting merits. Nowadays completely devoid of imagination, it churns out remakes and comic book adaptations. I'm glad he walked this path. Because otherwise we might not have Lovejoy or Al Swearangen :)

Ian Mcshane has a great stage presence. Check him out in Sexy Beast with Ray Winstone. Of course Ben Kingsley is great, but Ian's character with those dead shark eyes and are amazing when staring down Ray Winstone's character.

Most people know McShane from Deadwood, which was one of the highlights of his career. But any McShane fan should also check out the NBC show Kings. It was unfortunately canceled after one season, and the show itself was not as strong as Deadwood, but McShane ruled the cast. He gave as strong of a performance as he did in Deadwood (if not stronger). His character in Kings showed so many more dimensions than Al Swearengen. It's a pity the show was canceled.

Yea, gotta give NBC kudos for having the courage to put a show like Kings on their schedule. Problem is, it was a specialty show, and specialty shows don't last long on primetime cable channels. It would have been a lot better on HBO or Showtime. Probably would have gone 2-3 more seasons.
