I think the appeal is a bit deeper than that. many people like simple rap and Ian is effectively easy listening for rap fans. I don’t know anyone who is expecting a true hit from Ian, which puts him in a strange lane. he showed us that he gets the music objective and now he can tread water. it’s like a youtuber who doesn’t do anything new or unique, but you kinda like watching them bumble through a content portfolio. there’s.. charm? to that. on the flip side, everything i just said could just be an excuse to pat myself on the back for sitting through some mid
@timothyohara76592 ай бұрын
@@jay_344 thats a fair shake, but in terms of just looking for simpler stuff I think there's so many better options, I don't really understand why anyone would opt to put their time into this versus a gallery of artists who are perfectly fine staying in a lane while doing it better. it's an odd thing that I've seen with some artists that have been getting somewhat big with internet popular sub genres aswell.

@seth66912 ай бұрын
Eh this project is underwhelming but fantano doesn’t have authority/the ear for trap music. You can have a legendary and very “experimental” beat with conventional snare sounds, 808, cymbals.. like that’s what being inspired is. Tons of newer “hyperpop” or rage beats use the same hi hats and 808s yet it’s more about the synths, the composition.. what the chords/melody evoke. There’s no right thing you “should” be listening to. I like lil shine, Xaviersobased, Laker Brady, Bladee, zelooperz, Joeyy, Sickboyrari. They all use convention trap drums yet the beats go hard in my opinion

Ian's music is reminiscent of early Chief Keef, early rage music, early yeat music. Just because Ian is white doesn't mean he can't take a genuine interest in rap music. He is speaking about what matters to him and in a perspective that's relatable to many people. You're welcome to disagree but if you liked alot of these things he's influenced by, he's doing his most authentic version of that. In regards to the type of beats/producers many people like that early 2010's "cheap" sound.

I agree race doesn't matter. but saying he's putting out thee most authentic version of his influences is delusional. it's imitation. he may technically be a part of the genres he's contributing to, but he never added to it like chief keef did. at most i can say he has a good ear for beats, but drake had a good ear for beats and he's also mediocre for the most part.

I liked some of the songs on it. showboat, end up gone, big wigs, hate me, and goodbye horses were solid tracks. so 5/13 for me in todays world that's not a terrible album. does he have so many similarities to yeat of course he does. he's different though. i hate him being torn apart because he does things others do. he makes good music here and there. the album has a defined vibe and theme that's more than lots of albums have. the continuity is nice the emotion is real those 5 songs are good regardless of whether the technique, flow, lyrics, bars, etc have been used i couldnt care less. im here for good music not newness for newness sake i just want good content fr. the album cover was nice too he is unique in some ways, ways i like, i like him being in the mix

4:56 Not defending Ian here but these kinds of songs were not really characteristic of 2016 anymore. That song is clearly very inspired by Futuristic glo or Chief Keef’s sound around 2013. I agree that Ian’s music is generic and cheap but Fantano clearly has a negative bias (and lack of understanding) when it comes to trap music, and it’s clearly evident in most of his criticisms (for example at 5:07 where he talks about the snare rolls being done before; repetition of previous things is characteristic of a lot of trap music. Not everything has to be forward thinking). I know many people view trap as a surface level and drab genre but there’s a lot more nuance to the genre and how it has developed than most people think.

I feel like "Goodbye Horses" would be a really good album title for something rather jovial. Under Ian's god awful everything, the "Goodbye Horses" title comes off as word salad, crafted by someone artistically and intellectually uninterested. I can only hope Ian's career fizzles out sooner rather than later.
