In this tutorial video we look at making a lined leather belt pouch for a Fallkniven TK3 knife. We see how we can make the front portion of the pouch by forming leather over a wooden form or 'last' rather than using the knife itself.
We then explore how the pigskin lining can be applied to the sheath and how to create the binding on the front.

Easy to follow, very informative videos, you take your time and you do not skip a beat.. Your finished product never fails to impress.. It has raised the bar for leather work done well globally.. Trying to get some customers to understand just how much work goes into the perfect piece and why the co$t "is what it is" becomes trying at times.. Spectacular sheath Ian, Skol.

Your tutorials are super. I also use the Tandy machine. At 1:10 in the video, I found that I can still put the snap into the top die and it will hold in place, (like you did on the other snap) then press down the handle. This prevents the die from catching an edge of the snap if I just lay it on the bottom piece.

one other tip, if you do not have woodworking tools you can use dense foam (not styrofoam) to do basically the same kind of forming. you can use sandpaper to sand away the foam to your desired shape for wet forming, this is the same principle as what people use for fiberglass fabrication. it is not nearly as durable as wood but if it's all you have, it's better than nothing. a hacksaw and file with some wood is still better though.

Great vid as always! The only thing i'd suggest is to make the stitching for the beltloop before lining the sheath so the stitching is protected on the one hand and invisible on the other... perhaps just my personal taste. Keep up the good work!

A tip from an old woodworker - if you want the last to last :) use 3/4 exterior plywood it's a lot better, stronger and more stable than pine, I was cringing when you were pressing the U shaped piece over the form. Ply is a lot less prone to splitting when using screws, it needs pre-drilling though.

Great tutorial! Do you think you could make a video about improvised tools for leatherworking? Because for me, where I live, it is very expensive to buy leatherworking tools as they cannot be found locally and have to be imported from the US. I am still in school and I can't afford it. Shipping costs a ton and the price of just one tool is quite expensive, and I definately can't be sure if i'd need certain tools. Thanks a bunch if you could make a video!

Just a suggestion : If you are doing multiple pouches, I think you can get less surplus by doing multiple molds close beside eachothers. Then when you trim those you get much less surplus.

Hi Ian, Thanks for this excellent tutorial. Inspired to start into wet forming leather, I chose to make a holder for an axe stone, the round one. Given that is an oilstone, I chose not to line it. But I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. It has a press stud flap and I made a detachable belt loop, which connects to the flap by its press stud, leaving the pouch open while worn or working. Would love to send you a photo but don't know how to attach it to this comment. Andrew AU

will it be ok if I'll use this lining technique on a bracelet? I've never used pig skin before and i was just wondering if it's going to make my wrist sweat or whatnot...and will sweat or humidity wrinkle the lining? Another question is: how does the lining affect leather rigidity? Will I be able to wrap the bracelet around my wrist without messing up the lining? I need it to be more rigid so it will be loose around my wrist by tensioning the straps i want to close the bracelet with. So, help?

excellent video very informative. one question why did you not stitch the belt loop before you did the lining so the stitching didnt show.

You could do it that way if you wanted to.
@keithamsden3093
@keithamsden3093 7 жыл бұрын
One reason to do it this way is that once you have the belt loop attached to the back piece of leather, it makes it more difficult to attach the pig skin lining evenly and firmly. Having the loop bulging on the back prevents from being able to lay it down flat on both sides during gluing. It's not a huge deal, just a consideration.

all you need to start leatherworking is a diamond awl, some needles and thread, a craft knife or box cutter or even scalpel or art knife, and your leather. total startup cost could be under $15. you can make tons of small projects like holsters, knife sheaths, pouches, etc. with only the above tools. all the other stuff is just extra to improve the finish or the edges. start with small basic projects first with basic tools then once your stitching improves you can sell your work and buy tools.

Thanks for your great video! I'm making a small pen pouch for a friend as a first project and I dont have all the required finishing products, I was wondering, can I use a mixture of water+white glue to protect the inside instead of lining? It is an elastic and water tight finish when dried...I'm in the process of getting all the right stuff, just...for the time being...?

Very insightful, thanks a lot! Quick question - doesn't leather shrink once you've dyed it and hence isn't it a better idea to pre dye everything before you cut the leather pieces? Thanks :)
@Leodis.Leather

Wasn't planning on it, if you think about it the bag is the same thing as the pouch just scaled up! It won't be lined but it's still just a moulded front attached to a back/flap and then a closure mechanism. Plus a strap obviously! This is what I was talking about in the tips video when I said to try and learn principles not examples, you can take the same techniques in this video and scale them up to a moulded bag with no problems; there's no need to film the same thing twice :)
@itsumonihon

one final tip, if you don't want to make the "presser" tool (horseshoe looking thing in this video) some people just nail or staple down their leather onto a piece of wood underneath their project. this of course destroys the surrounding leather but usually that leather gets cut off anyway

Great video, I must begin by saying thank you for all of the information you have provided. Everything looks great. I have just recently began leather working, my first piece was a sheath for a clip point hidden tang knife that I purchased while vacationing in Prescott AZ. and I must say, that it is absolutely terrible. But that is okay, due to your videos and explanation of your techniques, I know that I will improve with practice and by trial and error. One question; What size thread and needle would you recommend for this small of a project and how do you prevent your pricking irons from cracking the surface of the leather? I have dampened the leather first, but then they stick and are very difficult to remove even with wax.
