Great video. About to start a 6 gauge upgrade for my 1970 fastback and this has helped alot, particularly with the wiring, senders and the speedo sensor in the transmission. Keep up the great work

GREAT UPGRADE! I loathe the original cluster on the 65s. Found your vid because I was thinking of getting a classic ins. setup for my 66 GT. Still a bit on the fence because I have the original tack/clock option that mounts to the Yoke. I like it, but I think I would really enjoy a new cluster more :P THANK YOU FOR POSTING!

fwiw I just bought a '65 k-code gt-tribute and whoever put in the gt-dash simply modified the top of the 5-gauge bezel rather than cutting the dash opening.

Great video! I was just restoring a 65 and mistakenly installed the GT Wiring Harness! I learned this when I went to wire in the cluster only to find i had two separate turn signal lights! I was left with the choice of either rewiring or going GT with the gauges. As you can imagine I chose to go GT. A few questions if you dont mind, did you crimp spade connectors on all the lights and original connections? How did you wire the Volt meter? Mine is basically a straight wire that operates like a "clampmeter" or inductor that loops through a gauge. Again awesome video, gave me the confidence to do it myself!
@IanKarr4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, I used spade connectors...but only on the new wiring. And I use shrink tubing wherever I can since crimp-on connectors are prone to failure. For the existing harness I used clamp-on taps so i didn't have to cut anything. The classic instruments volt meter takes power the way the rest of the gauges do....just without a sender. The stock voltage gauge is an ammeter which functions differently.

Cool ! is the speedometer cable and sending unit comes with kit or you buy it separately?
@IanKarr4 жыл бұрын
It all comes in the kit. Pretty turnkey except for whatever connectors or splices you need to make to your wiring harnesses in the car.

Even though the 65 had 1 turn signal bulb, the turn signal lever still had 2 different positions for left & right? Great video, btw I didn't know you had to cut out part of the dash to fit the new cluster. Do you think I can fit a 67-68 style cluster in a 65?
@IanKarr4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the turn signal had 2 positions, just like modern cars. Glad you liked the video. Not sure about a 67-68 style cluster in a 65. I'd think not, since it seems those gauges are much bigger than the 65's.

Very, very Good. Am doing the same thing and this is perfect for me. Question; Did you run a separate +12 and ground for the speedometer or did you combine them with the +12 and black grnd harnesses you created for the other guages? Also, what did you do with the old light bulbs, just leave them in behind the cluster? Thanks and thanks again for the video. Steve
@IanKarr4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Steve! I combined the power and grounds since the draw is minimal. I took the old bulbs out, wrapped the sockets with electrical tape and left them behind the cluster.
