Was my fathers (now passed) hobby. He spent days in his workshop. It was sad seeing him slip slowly into dementia. I bought him a ton of wood. Beautiful wood. And he just couldn't turn anymore. He forgot how. Was very sad to be sure. Hes in a better place now turning and enjoying himself Im sure. Nice job you did here sir. Dad would have loved to have watched and picked up tips.

I’m not a wood turner but I sure do enjoy watching your videos. The Color and form of this piece is fantastic. I’m curious as to how dry the timber is before you turn it. Some of the pieces look covered in green moss so they can’t be too dry. Once turned how do you keep them from not splitting and cracking?
@IanMacWoodturning
@IanMacWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! Thanks for your comment mate, truthfully some pieces from videos can crack and warp but certain types of wood seem to hold their shape perfectly like this pine & Leylandii. We’re looking at building/buying a wood kiln shortly so it shouldn’t be an issue in the future.

I have some questions for you: why do you use dipoxy? Is it because you like it better as a finish to your piece, or does help against warping and cracking when the wood dries? These might be absolutely silly questions, keep in mind I am an absolute noob at this !
@IanMacWoodturning
@IanMacWoodturning Жыл бұрын
I used Dipoxy just for a clear finish on this one! It definitely can be useful for stiffing up wood though and helping prevent cracking.

Beautiful piece, and great artistry and craftsmanship. Presume the original knot whorl block was pre-seasoned so it didn't wind up subsequently cracking.

Christophe

@IanMacWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Hey Christopher, I’d say a couple of coats may be better, if the resin is all level and smooth then you may not need to sand it but generally I do. Thanks for your comment!
