The Urbz: Sims in the City was developed by Griptonite Games, and published by Electronic Arts in November 2004. This recording was made from the original source files I composed, and remastered to sound a little nicer than the original hardware. This video is a lot longer than my average video, because I wanted to give two repeats of each song in the traditional VGM style.

It's probably only a matter of time before an inspired indie or small team takes up the challenge of making a story-and-character-driven "life simulation adventure" or however you would define the handheld Sims games. Though I have personally transitioned into indie development, I wouldn't be able to do the character and world building for something like this...

@@IanStocker Is there any way to find out if EA/Maxis/Griptonite placed a copyright on how the game was presented, or just the Sims/urbz trademark? I'm only a general purpose programmer, but I do miss this style of isometric basic life simulator with a story, and would love to give a shot at making one, but wouldn't want to fall afoul of copyright.

Huh, there's been an idea floating around in my head for a game similar to this for a while, I guess I don't really have the technical know-how or the discipline to make a full-fledged game though.

I remember having an idea of making an open world 2D game in a similar style to the GBA Sims games with quality of life improvements and a larger world. I've never touched game design but if i do this would be a dream project. I injected so many hours of my childhood into this game.

The Urbz is something from my early childhood that will stick with me forever. The game always had that borderline creepy and unnervingly wacky feel to it -- and i LOVED it; especially when my character cried... and when those shadow people floated in front of me when the music cut out, and when i lost at Comic Explosion and Doctor Max Stat... good times.

One of my favorite handheld games of all time, I still go back to it every few years to give it another playthrough, as someone who doesn't really get the mainline Sims games, but adores the style Griptonite brought to the franchise for the portable entries (aside from The Sims 2.. never really liked the vibe it had, always seemed a bit dry and.. honestly disturbing most of the time.) I absolutely adore Bustin' Out and this game especially, the DS version was one of the first games I bought for the handheld when I heard it was an expanded port.

In French, we have the expression "madeleine de Proust". It refers to a small thing, like a smell, a taste or a sound, that triggers a sudden and vivid memory of a particular moment or experience from the past. The term comes from the writer Marcel Proust, who wrote about how the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea brought back a flood of memories from his childhood. This game is a part of my childhood that I hold very dear to my heart. I'm glad that you could provide a high quality version of its soundtrack that, as somebody said in the comments, brought so much life to this game. If you don't mind me asking, how old were you when you were commissioned to compose these songs ?

I can't imagine any other game capturing the 2000s "urban" trend in a nice package, that's not GTA or Saints Row lmfao. I hate to use descriptors that have fallen out of favor, but that's really what it was. And this is way more easygoing. Basically the atmosphere of Hey Arnold without the existential moral crises for kids. The gaming world would do well to tap into this very particular 2000s vibe and create that Urbz-Hey Arnold life simulator, crises included. Makes another good save-the-city storyline too 🤣

I only remembered this game a few days ago, and man... so much memories that came back with it ! All the minigames that gave me uncontrollable laugh as a kid (especially Squeegee Clean, Sushi Sensei and Comic Explosion), all the characters and their weird noises as they were speaking, the mixed feeling of the game waving between creepyness, crazyness and some sort of simulation of a perfect normal life... and of course the incredible songs. Way too many memorable tracks to write them here, thank you very much for all this good work ! Fun fact actually, i could still remember and hum some musics of this game despite having forgotten where it came from. I guess that's how you recognize when a game have good music right ?

I remember recording all the tracks I liked through the aux cable to my PC before those were a thing and because I was desperate to have those tracks lol. Never got past Urbania sadly, but years later bought another used one that had more areas unlocked. After I heard Glasstown Day, life was never the same haha. Love how this soundtrack carries the uniqueness of the first Sims game's soundtrack. Thank you for this and for having a profound influence on a lot of stuff I made over the years. 👍

The name of New City is Glasstown, the track titled City Day is one of the radio songs called Hip-Hop. Bayou 2 is used in the Bayou at night. 8-bit is used in November 29, 1984. It's a place you can visit with the time machine. Hope this helps!

This wonderfully composed music has changed my life and my taste in music forever. I can't thank you enough. I associate different times of days and urbans/country places with the cool grooves here. Of all the game and movie soundtracks that defined my life, this is probably in the top three. I can't thank you enough for the true funkadelic fun grooves and the attention to detail/genre with which they're all written. The hip hop, the jungle Moogoo Monkey beats, the operation room music, the zydeco New Orleans grooves that callback to the Sims 1 ....I have loved this soundtrack for decades and don't plan on stoppping anytime soon. Thanks, big time.
