If you try this lens for astro..my best settings are 13 to 15 second shutter, f2 to f 2.5, iso 1600 to 2500 depending on moon and ambient light. Use manual focus and punch in on a bright star. Infinity focus on my copy of the viltrox 13 is a good bit before the infinity marking on the digital display.

Another great video Ian. I bought the Viltrox lens a while back and love the build quality and really enjoy shooting seascapes with it. Thanks to you and your recent videos I have ventured beyond my normal lazy go to coastal shots of Wiseman’s. Keep them coming.

I like the Viltrox 13mm for it's close-up capability: you can get quite close to an object of interest while still getting a sense of the environment it's in (with a fair amount of background blur if you open up the aperture).

I have the Viltrox, I find the FL great but the coatings are really bad. It always flares and has a blue spot in the center when a bit of sun reflects

Ian, great video. I have the same camera and note with interest that my 10-24 WR Fuji len’s is not on the recommended list for the 40mp sensor. So I was thinking of trading it and getting this lens as I already have the 33mm and love the solid build quality. I only ever use the wide end of my 10-24 as I have the 16-55 lens which is fantastic on our new camera.

Looking forward to the vlog where you test this lens shooting Astro. I shoot a bit of Astro myself and currently use the excellent Samyang 12mm f2 on my Fuji but it's manual focus (not really an issue for wide field Astro) so the AF on this would be a benefit for other types of photography and I'd be gaining a larger max aperture

Gracias

Looks interesting , I have the fuji 10-24 , and the 16mm fuji prime so its difficult to justify another prime. If it shoots anything like their 56mm it will be superb

Great video! Would you consider the viltrox 13mm for real estate? Or maybe the fujinon 10-24mm?
@ian_worth2 жыл бұрын
If the viltrox is wide enough for the the property that you are shooting then go for the viltrox, its better optically than the 10-24. if you need a wider lens go for the 10-24 as it will give you more flexibility 👍

Nice comparison video. But is the Viltrox REALLY sharper than the Fuji? How do they compare when viewing at 100%. It drives me crazy when folks zoom in 300% [don't know how far in you were] and then say Lens A is sharper than Lens B. At 100% I suspect one cannot see any or very little visual difference. Curious to see how it performs shooting astro.
@ian_worth2 жыл бұрын
Hey Johnny, yep the viltrox is sharper towards the edges of the frame, this is to be expected though when comparing a prime lens with a zoom. All of the image comparisons on the video were zoomed in by 50% on the 40mp Fuji xh-2. I'm not a fan of 100 or 200% comparisons either.

This is a great lens for sure. I used it at a race track for extreme close photos and it focused fast and was sharp. Looking forward to the Viltrox 75mm f1.2 coming soon. If it is as sharp as this one, Fuji has some serious competition.

I'm interested to know what the focus breathing and noise of the auto focus is like on the 14mmf2 . I ended up selling my 35mm f2 because the focus breathing was so bad.

@@ian_worth I never had any issues with the auto focus… I usually use it in manual focus.. I love the easy push pull way the manual focus works..It’s very sharp at 5.6

@@steveramsay5941 Makes sense, I would do the same. I’ve never used the 14mm Fuji so can’t compare. The 13mm Viltrox isn’t perfect, but is capable of truly outstanding performance! I’ve been very happy with it.

Light gathering ability, especially for astro

Yep, Astro photographers need as much light as possible to keep the iso as low as possible, the wider the aperture, the better, I would say 👍

What an odd question! WA lenses can be great for night photography of all kinds - not just astro. Also very useful to have when shooting indoors, at gigs/parties/weddings, any kind of event where you like to take in the ambience of the crowd. This lens can also get very close up, so again, indoor, low light for your artsy shots ... you can always stop down with a large aperture lens, you can't do reverse on more restrictive aperture lenses - get more creative!
