Renee's record as interim head coach has been near flawless. There's not much more anyone else could do in her position. Renée deserves the role at least to the end of the season if she wants it, but to me she's earned the role on a permanent basis.

The way Arsenal becomes the best team in the world is by being consistent and that includes the manager and spine of the team. It's how Chelsea essentially worked under Hayes who was a young unknown for many years. The fans have really got behind Renee and I think most of us want her to stick around for many many years. I just hope that she doesn't get poached by a European club.

Early days but Sonia Bompastor looks like she could eclipse what Emma Hayes achieved with Chelsea. Good to see all 3 ENG Teams in the QFs, but Man City got absolutely schooled by Barca! Brutal Euro '25 Group for ENG, SPA has to go in as favourites! The Nordics with a number of teams is very well represented across the tournament, some real strength in depth there. Good to see the prize money has more than doubled for the tournament with the total pot now standing at £34m (41m euros), a 156% increase from Euro 2022.

I remember an interview with Guru Reiten where she said that after a particular season Emma Hayes looked at and said, "Well, you have to score more goals now." And so she did. (That's sort of how I remember the interview, but don't trust my memory!)

Renee Slegers has earned the job of head coach. She now needs an assistant coach as good as she is. Regarding the Euros, hopefully Norway will find their groove this time. Having star players like that is probably a disservice: the coach fails to understand that it is more difficult - not less - to mold them into a strong national team. Ada with Lyon, Caro Hansen with Barça , Guro Reiten with Chelsea and Frida Maanum with Arsenal - they all play different systems. With Iceland and Norway in top form, the Swiss should just bring the cheese with holes and end the games on time, period. It'd be a pleasant surprise if they advance, and not sure that would make football more popular in Switzerland. But if the Netherlands kick out either France or England, they may change the color of their flag XD. Denmark - in my humble opinion - could play spoiler in group C - Germany and Sweden are not that dominant. Happy Winter Holidays to you both.

Renee will be the most sought after manager in European football. Doesn’t matter if it’s a men’s or women’s team, she’ll succeed wherever she goes either as manager or director of football. Arsenal will be foolish not to offer her the deal at least until the end of the season.

Really enjoyed this one! Really rational analysis on the Arsenal manager situation vs Counter Pressed’s pessimistic take. Re: City think it’s time we start talking about Gareth Taylor. He never learns! Squad building at city has been 🥱 for 3 seasons in a row.
@edcleverley933323 күн бұрын
I think City have suffered from missing the CL group stage in the last few years. They brought in experienced internationals players like Angledaal, Castelenos, etc. but couldn't offer them enough game time, so they left. Steph Houghton and Esme Morgan barely saw the pitch in their last couple of seasons. Then they changed to bringing in young players who would be happier with the odd 10 minutes here and there; Blinkilde Brown, Naomi Layzell, Poppy Pritchard (who they shouldn't have loaned to Palace). Now they're being hit by injuries and don't have the experienced players to rely on. I blame the format of the Champions League more than Taylor, as when the summer transfer window closes you don't know what you're planning for
@Aroseinharlem23 күн бұрын
@@edcleverley9333 I think his tactics are too rigid. He depends on Lauren Hemp and Bunny Shaw which fair enough who wouldn't build a style of play around them. He had CK an experienced player on the bench the whole season. If he had some EQ skills he could've future proofed by involving her. Stumbled across some unicorns and without them the squad is dull.
@rnsc834223 күн бұрын
Hemp and Kelly can, and used to , both add some magic. Bench half that team for no explicable reason and the attack is wherever Hemp is, and Bunny is not being fed enough. On top of that the endless passing must become an end in itself, and put players to sleep as well as the audience ,and continuous shouting of directions, may have killed of some ability for players to think for themselves?
@edcleverley933323 күн бұрын
@@Aroseinharlem I agree. I'd be interested to know what Kelly did to be frozen out like this. Very unlucky that Shaw and Miedema are out at the same time having let Pritchard go on loan. She was excellent for England U19s in the summer. Last 2 seasons I'd criticise his rigidity, it's why they're down to the bare bones this year, not giving good players like Filipa Angledaal and Esme Morgan any minutes so they're not there anymore when they're needed
@edcleverley933323 күн бұрын
@@rnsc8342Completely agree other than Shaw is getting chances, she's way ahead in the scoring charts but now she's injured they don't have anyone to bring in. I could be wrong, often am, but I think he got pissed at Kelly being more focussed on her wedding than training and froze her out, to the determent of the team. Can't see her being there next year. Given a choice of Kelly or Taylor, I'd pick her every time. Remember when USA played us at Wembley a few years ago, someone lip read Rose Lavell talking to old City team mates? They were laughing at ridiculous things he'd say. In previous years I've felt Taylor's rigidity is the teams main problem, with all the injuries they're having this season, as well as experienced players leaving through frustration, he's dropped to second behind squad depth

Wrighty, you just said take out players like Bunny Shaw, Greenwood and Hemp from any team, they're down. Barca literally played without few of their starters as well. They didn't start Alexia. Caroline Graham Hansen, Ingrid Engen didn't even play. Both teams were missing their key players. City don't have squad depth. Just say that. Barca literally won Champions League in a season which Alexia missed the whole season and Graham Hansen missed 6 months due to injury. What's your point?

Arsenal bring players in too early then don't give them a chance. Gio is the best attacker at Athletico Madrid this season as well as starting and scoring for Brazil. Katherine Kuhl doesn't get a chance at Arsenal, at 21 that's hurting her development even if she plays every game for Denmark. Kafaji barely gets a minute. Lotte was player of the year last year, don't think she's started a game. Codina plays more for Spain than Arsenal. I'd much rather have a coach who manages minutes, like Bompastor at Chelsea, and gives young players a chance to prove themselves

Unfortunately Eidvall left us with no leeway: it has to be the best squad, every week. Anyway there is plenty of football, those players must not whine (not accusing them...) but rather be damn sure to take the opportunity when it comes.
@edcleverley933312 күн бұрын
@@lllordllloyd I worry that all the wide players who get minutes are 29 or 30. There doesn't seem to be a plan to bring in Viv Lia. I don't think Freya Godfrey will make the grade, but at her age Jule Brandt was getting the opportunity to start every game at Hoffenhiem. A potential lost talent The WSL needs to expand to 16 teams and set a limit on non-English, (not non-UK) players or we're denying home grown talent the opportunity to fail or succeed

Spain has a chip on their shoulder. They won the world cup then got popped in the mouth by Brazil in the Olympics and then lost to Germany. They didn't even medal.
