Am auzit ca in doi-trei ani va fi gata un IAR 80 fabricat de câțiva pasionați din resurse proprii in SUA. Va fi echipat cu un motor folosit pe B24 Liberator care ar fi foarte asemanator ca forma și performante cu cel al IAR-ului. Offf, sa-l vad zburând!

I became very interested in the Romanians as German allies during ww2 discovering that they fought tenaciously against the Russians on the Eastern front. I built a 1/72nd scale kit of the IAR 80 back in the 80s which started me on a journey of discovery on the Romanian aero industry. The IAR 80 is largely forgotten but this amazing aircraft was in the hands of a skilled pilot one of the best designs to see service at the time. They took a heavy toll on American P38s over Ploiesti, completely outclassing the hapless big twins literally running rings around them. B24 crews to this day recall some of the seemingly crazy stunts Romanian pilots pulled, split turns and barrel rolls under bombers that were only a few hundred feet off the ground!

maybe im a bit biased, being romanian but I find it a beautiful plane as well. Yes it had very good results early, and decent results even late war when it faced some newer generation aircraft. It kept a positive ratio in the sky.

One of the craziest "stunts" (just to use your terms...) ever, performed by a Romanian pilot, flying an IAR-80, took place on 1st of August 1943, when over 150 USAAF bombers, as part of Tidal Wave Operation, attacked some objectives of the Romanian oil industry in the Ploiesti area. In that day, Sublocotenent Aviator Carol Anastasescu flying his "80" (tail number 222), entered an unprecedented performance in the history of Romanian aviation if not in the history of the entire World aviation, by downing two B-24 bombers, first of them with the onboard guns and the second one with...his very own airplane by an intentional crash into the bomber, destroying it and killing everyone on board of it, and him, miraculously surviving the crash. As brief description of that unusual fight : Shortly after shooting down the first B-24, Anastasescu ran out of ammo. Badly wounded and with his airplane on fire - from the defensive fire coming from the other bombers - Anastasescu realized that one B-24 broke formation attacking him with its forward firing machine guns. At too low altitude to safely bale-out, Anastasescu decided to crash into incoming attacking bomber. The rest of the count came from some ground witnesses which declared that immediately after the impact the two planes "flew" together for few seconds after which they crashed into the ground on different directions. Thrown clear of his airplane wreck Anastasescu was found unconscious, with multiple shot wounds, burn wounds and a broken spine, landed on top of a hay stack, thus saving his life.

Si totusi, cea mai glorioasa zi a IAR-ului 80 a fost 10 iunie 1944 cand a masacrat celebrele P-38 Lightning (ïndienii cu doua pene") americane venite intr-un atac la joasa inaltime, care ar fi trebuit sa ne ia prin surprindere. Sansa a facut ca sa fie exact invers, IAR-80 fiind in elementul lui la joasa altitudine, plus un pic de sansa.

IAR-80 nu a fost echipat, din păcate, niciodată cu BMW-801. Cel despre care spui tu, se pare că ar fi fost echipat cu un Gnome-Rhone de 1500 CP pe care l-au livrat nemții din cele capturate de la francezi. În schimb două exemplare au fost motorizate cu DB-601 (a produs vibrații f mari și s-a renunțat la idee) și cu DB-605 (acest exemplar a dat rezultate f bune la teste, s-a dispus echiparea tuturor avioanelor cu acest motor dar nu s-a reușit din lipsă de motoare - nemții le țineau pt ei).

Am vorbit cu un nene, imi scapa numele, care a scris cateva carti printre care si "IAR 80-istoria unui vanator necunoscut", si care mi-a spus ca cea mai reusita replica e cea de la Muzeul Aviatiei. Sanse sa vedem din nou un IAR 80 zburand, nu sunt, din cauza lipsei de implicare a celor ce pot finanta un asemenea proiect. Pacat, am avea si noi un motiv de mandrie. Atunci am putut, acum nu mai suntem in stare... Mai ai filmulete cu IAR 80? Poate un gun camera? P.S. Multumesc pt postare!

Din pacate, nu mai exista nici un exemplar original. Nu le-au taiat rusii ci ai nostri, poate la indicatii rusesti desi greu de crezut deoarece in 1965 mai existau cateva bucati si atunci plecasera rusii. Cu regret o spun ca prostia noastra le-a taiat pe toate. In prezent exista doua replici aproximative, una la Muzeul Militar, cealalta la Muzeul Aviatiei.

Din pacate, americanii au invatat lectia si ne-au tras-o si ei pe 23 iunie 1944 cu P-51 Mustang, IAR-80 fiind total surclasat. Dupa aceasta data au mai ramas doar Me-urile 109 G romanesti si nemtesti in lupta cu "indienii cu o pana" (Mustang).

Multumesc! La inceput, IAR-80 a corespuns cerintelor, ulterior, din cauza lipsei unui motor corespunzator, a pierdut teren in competitia cu vanatori din ce in ce mai performanti, mai ales cand au venit americanii si au mutat lupta la altitudini mari unde motorul IAR-1000A era total neputincios.

DiCesare nu apare în film. Unul din cei care explică la sfârșit este eroul căpitan aviator Gheorghe Popescu-Ciocănel, mort la 12 august 1944 în urma arsurilor căpătate în lupta cu americanii din data de 26 iulie 1944. Celălalt tip care explică, cel sprâncenat, îmi pare cunoscut dar nu-i știu numele.

Salut, spune-mi rog câteva cărți despre participarea aeronauticii românești in cel de-al doilea război mondial. Am doua cărți scrise de Dan Antoniu, “Istoria unui vânător necunoscut” și “Am fost și eu in Ikaria”. Nu sunt suficiente, le-am recitit deja de câteva ori. Mulțumesc!

The exact number of P-38s shot down by IARs is a bit uncertain, but in one famous encounter between the types, on June 10 1944, IAR 80s shot down 14 P-38s for only 5 losses. In total 23 P-38s were lost during the mission, a 30% loss rate, which was the highest single mission loss rate suffered by US fighters during WW2. Google "P-38 the blackest day". However it's worth noting that the engagement between the P-38s and IAR 80s happened under ideal circumstances for the IAR. The P-38s were flying at low altitude, trying to avoid detection. The IAR 80s dived on them from altitude and several were shot down in the first pass. The ensuing dogfight happened at altitudes of just a few hundred feet, something that negated most of the P-38s advantages. It all lasted just 4 minutes. The IAR 80s were extremely nimble at low altitude compared to the heavy P-38s, but they were massively under-powered by comparison and suffered a speed disadvantage of some 100mph. If the battle had been fought at medium to high altitudes, I'm sure the result would have been very different. But that's war for you: how and where you fight matters just as much as what weapons you use, if not more. Case in point: against the P-51 things were very different. Just a couple of weeks after "the blackest day", on June 23, there was another big encounter between the Royal Romanian Air Force and the USAAF. This time the Americans used proper tactics and, at an engagement altitude of around 25000 feet where the French engine of the IAR was gasping for air and with a massive speed disadvantage, the IAR 80 was totally outclassed. They got slaughtered. There was only one unconfirmed kill against the P-51. After that the IAR 80s were quickly withdrawn from engagements against USAAF fighters and air defence fell on solely on units equipped with the much more capable Bf 109G.

@@Giuseppe86 That is correct. Im romanian and that`s a very accurate represantation of facts. But the IAr-80 hay days were on the Eastern Front (it was withdrown bck to Romania in late 1943/1944) and in Russia performed superbly until it was relegated to Ploiesti Oil fields protection. It was totally outclassed by 1944 but that was because of the engine. By late war it lacked a faster engine and Germany refused to provide one forcing Romania to buy the Bf109 G. Which was a very capable version of the Bf 109 but the romanian pilots still prefered their IAR80.

Sa nu exageram... nu la rapiditate excela IAR-ul, ci la mobilitate. Era printre primele in 1940, dar n-a fost niciodata primul. Cand a aparut el, zburau deja Spitfire MK V si Bf 109 E care-l depaseau cu mult la viteza si de asemenea era intrecut si de cateva avioane rusesti. Iar ceilalti au tot scos si imbunatatit pe banda rulanta, iar noi tot la el am ramas.Singurul prototip cu motor BMW 801 (se credea ca va depasi 680 km/h) a fost bombardat impreuna cu fabrica IAR Brasov in vara lui '44.

fotosony . iar 80 a fost pe locul 3 la putere de foc pe toata durata razboiului si pe locul 4 ca performante in teatrul european . abea spre sf razboiului o fost dus in jos de aparatele rusesti si americane , asta datorita faptului ca rusi au beneficiat de ajutor tehnologic aliat .pe noi nemti doar ne-au "prostit" foker o fost superior ca viteza si altitudine . nu si la manevrabilitate ori putere de foc fata de iar . 80/81 ..

Leo Marin E frumos ca lauzi atât unul din cele mai bune produse românești, dar exagerezi. Cum sa fie IAR 80 mai bine înarmat decât FW 190? Ala avea 4 tunuri de 20mm și 2 mitraliere de 7,92 mm, in timp ce IAR-ul avea in cea mai buna varianta 2 tunuri de 20 mm și 4 mitraliere ușoare. Un P51 avea 6 mitraliere grele de 12,7 mm, un P 47 avea 8 asemenea mitraliere, un Me 262 avea 4 sau 6 tunuri de 30mm și lista continua.

Unfortunetly no.After removing the H.S. King Mihai's cifer of the planes,and enlarging the round tricolour,the filthy communists only used them untill around 1955 then scrapped them en mase,only to have a reason to ask the soviets for different migs. Anyway,i plan on gathering a team to gather any schetches and drawings of it and remake it form scratch,bothj in original form (could be used as the first trainer for new pilots,this way keeping in touch with history too,acrobater etc),hopefully both in original form and with hidraulics,fast enough and perfect so that the last surviving airman from the war to still pilot it (he was flown in a trainer mig 21 i think,the last naional day celebration,over the arch of triumf).
