Ib - New Endings

Mary couldn't leave since she didn't have anyone to trade off with. I also think the world doesn't quite want her to leave but if Garry dies there's nothing to stop her. Think of it like a trade, Mary doesn't exist but Garry and Ib do. By switching Garry ceases to exist (Painting) and the world aligns to make the anomaly Mary exist by making her Ib's sister. In the other ending I believe they mind break not long afterwords and become clinically dead so it wasn't slow.

i feel like people who see mary as either somebody who can do no wrong or a terrible evil villain are kinda missing the point. she has a good motive in wanting to leave the gallery, but she's not justified in trying to kill garry just so she can take his place (and eating the candy in "together, forever" so ib wouldn't have any memories of him was dickish too). overall, she's not a completely one sided character and that's what makes her so interesting.

Same goes for people who hate her and completely disregard her motive, the how and why she did things. Hence, she wasnt meant to be a good or bad character. she was not "just a villain", "just villains" are one-dimensional characters used in hollywood movies so that we don't feel bad for them when the good guy beats them in the room where you burn her painting with the bunch of books on the floor, there was one called "how to make firends" and god i felt so bad for mary when i saw that, i imagined her all alone in the fabricated world all those years, just wishing she would have one real friend and seeing garry's expression after finding that book, you can tell he felt bad too

In 2012, when I was 12 years old, I played this game for the first time and liked Mary right off the bat. I adored her ending the most, and even though I felt bad for Garry, I couldn't bring myself to let Mary suffer alone in the gallery forever or cease to exist. I stubbornly wanted her to get what she wished for and be happy. Now I'm 20, and today I replayed the game. I didn't remember almost anything about the gameplay and the ways to get certain endings, but I was still lucky enough to get the best ending. Promise of Reunion. This time I noticed tiny little things about Garry that I couldn't comprehend when I was little. I got deeper in his personality and felt like I could finally understand him, probably because I'm in his age group now. Of course, I still like Mary. She's still a pitiful child that deserves better. But this is not the reason to kill a good man just to let her live in his stead. Mary deserves to live, Garry does not deserve to die. Mary is fiction. A painting. A being that is devoid of humanity, morality, soul. Even when she gets out of the gallery, she still keeps her memories. And that means she keeps her state of mind, her traumas, etc. Something that will always make her different from humans. Garry belongs to the real world. So he has a full right to go back to where he belongs. There's no excuse for robbing him of his life. And this is exactly why PoR is the best ending. Garry is alive and well. And Mary gets liberation from the eternity of pointless existence in a harsh, harsh reality, forever alone. Something no child should experience - real or fake. Yes, she ceases to exist. But this is the only just way to let her find peace. So I guess growing up has taught me that happiness and justice go back to back. And sometimes real happiness is bittersweet.

That's a good point--at least in the Promise of Reunion ending, Mary isn't suffering anymore. Better than her stuck in the fabricated world all by herself. That makes me feel a bit better about liking the PoR ending the most.

Funny thing, I had the same opinion on Mary as you did when you were smaller! I was around Ib's age when I discovered the game through youtube, and upon watching the playthroughs, I took a liking to Mary more than Gary. In retrospect, it was probably because I was a little girl myself, and therefore could more easily understand and sympathize with her in comparison to the grown man that was Gary. After all, I knew all too well how powerless a kid could feel, and how cruel or unfair the world could seem to them. I pitied her and her situation, and although I knew Gary was a nice guy, I wasn't old enough to connect with him like I could with Mary. Given that, it seemed only natural to me to root for her, to want her to be able to break from this unsavory mold for once. Kids don't usually have the power to change their situations in real life- most of the time, fate is entirely out of their hands and they are at the mercy of others. Now that I think about it, isn't a lot of juvenile fiction just wish fulfillment? Despite how cruel and merciless her methods in obtaining her freedom could be, I suppose I couldn't resist the story of a little girl being able to change their situation for the better for once, given I was a little girl myself. Now that I'm an adult myself, I connect with Gary way more. After all, adults are no longer as much of a mystery to me as they were to 9-year-old me, and I even marvel a bit about how selflessness and concerned he can be for Ib throughout the game. He's a good guy, and as much as it hurts to say it, he really doesn't deserve to die just because Mary wants to see the real world. Even so, I hesitated on the idea that Mary, with no other form of relief, was probably better off dead. Still, you're likely right about PoR being the best ending. Mary could not live in blissful ignorance inside of Geurtena's World like the rest of the paintings- her sapience from being Geurtena's most human work is more like a curse instead of a blessing. So long as she lives, she just cannot bring herself to be content with this world she lives in. She must feel like she doesn't belong anywhere- not content like the other art pieces, but not entirely human either, and that sentiment is devastating for a little girl that has to spend the rest of eternity in such an awkward spot. Although I'd imagine Mary couldn't understand this, perhaps dying would be a more gentler fate. She shouldn't be burned out of hatred, betrayal, or disgust for her true identity; she should be burned out of compassion and a wish for her eternally restless soul to finally be put at ease. All in all, I guess it's best to understand that neither of them deserves to be truly hated as characters. As people, sure, but it's hard to really fault either character for their actions, given their circumstances.

The first ending when he's gone crazy. You remember him saying (not the exact same) "That is disgusting! Who'd do that to a girl? If I'd see that, I'd certainly tell them off." Even if he is crazy, he would still help others. (But in a twisted way. Cus for example he doesn't realize that the "bad ones" in his new point of view, are actually the good ones.) My love for Garry only grows xD

The dark paint represents the abyssal water by the way. You see the same effect within the Abyss in the final dungeon. It kind of reminds me of the red stuff from Amnesia that slowly encroached on the castle.

Can't. Mary isn't real and as such, can't leave the gallery without taking someones place, if you pay attention to the ending where Mary actually DOES get out (together forever), Gary died. I think (and this is just a theory) that Mary has to actually take someones life to be able to get out herself.

Hawkalon Actually, she was the last of Guertena's work, she was meant to be the most human of his work. Member when Gary reads the book and it said that she seemed almost human but is merely just a painting? She was a painting given human emotions but could never be fully human. You can't just classify her as just villain, because being just a villain would require evil intent. She's not evil, because she doesn't know what evil is, not yet. She just wanted to not be alone but she didn't know how to do it without hurting someone, she doesn't stop to think because she doesn't know any better. Saying she has no right to exist is just cruel, because she dose exist.

She abandons both when they decide to stop looking for the exit in the newest endings. In other words , you stop being usefull to her she will probably kill you or leave you behind? What's with all the hate on Mary? She's a little girl (probably nine years of age) who wanted friends in the real world and freedom from the cursed gallery. I know she's supposed to be the "villain" of the group, but you at LEAST have to feel SOME sympathy for her. In the Painting's Demise ending, we know that Mary went by herself, to the "real" world. The museum was closed and locked. Mary wanted to go outside, but it's a possible chance she died of starvation or worse, killed by one of the statues (considering it got dark, she must've bumped into a statue and it fell on her, thus killing her) in the museum, considering she's "human" in the real world, instead of a "painting" in the cursed gallery. I actually liked the ending where Ib and Mary escape. I honestly think that Mary should have a happy ending, without sacrificing Ib and Garry.

My reaction to "A Paintings Demise": Well Mary great job Mary, you decided to bring yourself to the real world and break the universe. So yeah Ib and Garry are probably dead and yeah great job, Mary, great job. And I do have an idea for a good ending where the three escape. It's called "Together, As A Family" where Ib, Garry, and Mary are now a family.

the ending can also be achieved if you save garry and burn mary's painting or burn her painting but garry dies. the endings to where the world creates a fake garry if he dies after marys portrait is burned. if garry dosnt make it then its ibs mother instead and you get ib all alone if you follow them

It probably was the real world, it was most likely she couldn't live in the real world because she didn't take the place of someone, like in one of the endings, Gary stays behind, and she takes his place as Ib's little sister, Gary died which let her go, but Ib and Gary never actually died just went insane and or got depressed, the only reason the world was changing was probably due to the "art" world trying to bring her back knowing she wasn't supposed to be there in the first place.

Oh and for those of you confused about The World of Guertena ending, here's my take on it. They weren't dead yet, but seeing as Lady in Blue had Garry's rose and Ib's rose is just laid out with some petals gone, it's implied that eventually, they'll die. Even with the roses in tact, you can't survive without food and water... (the water I'd assume isn't enough to sustain them).

You're right, he rightly was scared as hell. Garry's known for being a wimp, he's not going to move towards ANYTHING holding a weapon if he has any other ideas to avoid injury. Anyway, if Mary didn't die, she'd just go after the next person to come along, so I don't think it was wrong to do, nor was it done with cruel intentions. The deciding factor for me is Garry showed remorse afterwords if you stop to investigate her things, but she's crazy and uncaring of their lives to the very end.

These two endings are parallel opposites, like how Promise of Reunion and Together Forever are opposites. Welcome To The World Of Guertena is where they all are together, but they are not out. A Painting's Demise is where Mary escapes yet she still dies, making nobody happy...

Bruna Santos They went insane. Garry snapped in the doll room and after seeing Garry broken Ib just couldn't kept going on. Chances _are_ that they died afterwards, since they're human beings with needs but yeah, it wasn't technically Mary who finished them off

OMG_its Me. They either starved and dehydrated since they just stayed there with no food and no water despite being human beings or they were killed by Mary or the other paintings/sculptures.

Eradictus Dude, I think Mary deserves to burn in hell, she is the one that killed Gary in the other endings? Noone thinks that that is bad? Ruining her life, for heck she should be a loner in that place all day if i care. I liked Mary, but i knew she couldnt be trusted. I hope some people agree to what im saying

@@gessyb936 I'm not here to say "murder is okay" but she's a child who has no experience with real people and was raised by a bunch of murdery paintings in the gallery hellscape. She doesn't exactly have someone to help her know what's right or wrong. I don't think she's a good person but she is something of a tragic figure, hard to blame her when she's still trying to figure out how real people work. That and she only seems interested in killing Ib if you approach her painting with a lighter, and even then it's clearly out of panic.

I think that part refers to Mary's "father" as Guertena, seeing how he was the one who painted her in the first place.

I want ib and gary to survive, I like the other one when mary is killed because shes EVIL! And ib and gary escape and then they see each other and remember everything and gary says ill keep the hankerchief for a while cause I know we will meet again....... I like nice endings.

She isn't a child, she's over 100 years old, but I can understand her mentality and the fact that she's lonely. However, in the Together Forever ending, Ib forgets everything but Mary remembers perfectly well. She took the candy Garry gave Ib, the only thing she can remember him by, and ate it in front of her with a smile. When Garry isn't caught by the dolls and remembers what Mary is, Mary moves to kill Ib at the top of the stairs with no provocation before Garry intervenes. She's a psycho.

if only Mary wasnt so crazy about it... :\ i do feel bad for her being all alone and wanting to get out but then you have to take in the whole gallery as a lonely character in that it didnt want her to leave. I guess you cant get everything even if you tried. i do like the idea of Ib and Mary being sisters and Garry being an added friend :) itd be cute... til the gallery came back to haunt them 0_o
