The stuff under the paint is sanding sealer. You should actually leave it unless you are dying the grain. Sand it smooth with 300 and its good to prime and paint.

When I saw that you released a new video, I was thinking "curious, maybe this guy with his set of instuments will sand down that body pretty fast and without any issues?" Because I just manually sanded down my old 6-str Ibanez with pretty thin finish one week ago. And that was ridiculous - it took so much time. Actually, even more than I anticipated. And even more than you just can imagine reading this comment. You just can't expect that amount of work, unless you're doing it. And even then you don't believe that this is reality, and that paint does not actually regenerate all the time. Not worth to buy tools for a single project, so I had to this manually. Hand-crafted stuff. More like a hand-job though. Damn. Turns out, that it's not that easy even with tools and heat-gun. Now I wonder how some people get those awful dings and chips on rock-solid paint. Maybe they understand the word "axe" literally?
@MilianMalivukMusic6 жыл бұрын
Dude you're speaking right to my heart. "Forever" in this context is literally FOREVER. Like, I need an hour for a few centimetres. Thinking about trying again carefully with the heatgun and a plastic scraper... It's really like it's regenerating, laughing at you dumb idiot trying to sand it. The Sisyphos myth is wrong. He wasn't pushing a rock up a hill. He was manually sanding an Ibanez guitar body.

Depends on what you personal preference is! Fixed bridge, trem? What pickups did you enjoy in other guitars? I wouldn't cheap out on hardware, you have to spend some money if you want a solid guitar.

have you tried to remove the finish with a card scraper (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Card_scraper)? I have done this once on a guitar covered with tons of poly. It worked pretty good. And you don't have the nasty dust flying around.

Great stuff- awesome about the sponsorship! Having now stripped it, what do you think is the best way to get it back to bare wood, especially if not adding a top/veneer?
@MilianMalivukMusic6 жыл бұрын
You can use the heatgun and scraper but be VERY careful. In my case, little wood chips were not so bad since it's going to be covered anyway, if you want to be 100% sure to leave your body wood undamaged, only sand it down. It will take time but it's the safest way. And it depends on the wood and finish quality. On the headstock the heatgun method worked marvellous, but not on the body. It's hard to tell.
@tomperret77346 жыл бұрын
@@MilianMalivukMusic I wonder if using a plastic rather than metal blade to scrape would help reduce chips? I've got the typical thick black finish, so best gun would likely save a lot of time. Hoping to go for a natural back and burst stained veneer top...So will keep a keen eye on your updates! Luckily the hardware on the RGA8 is pretty decent and I've already installed Fishman Fluence Modern pickups in place of the garbage IBZ stock pups (which I'll have to remove and later reinstall). Good luck with it all.

Cooles Projekt ! Hast du denn auch im Kopf, dass du den Body um die Stärke des Tops runterhobeln musst ? Sonst ist der Hals zu tief.
@MilianMalivukMusic6 жыл бұрын

Michael from Guitarmory is a really cool guy. I 1000000000% recommend going through them to anyone. Their pickups are fucking amazing. My homie Eddie from I Magnified got me hooked on them and I’ll be picking some up soon for my next 7 String. If anyone here hasn’t seen or heard of Guitarmory, go check them out ASAP. Keep in mind that if you don’t see something you like on their website, just wait for Winter NAMM where some new pickups will be released.

You will sand forever trying to get that thick, nasty polyester base coat off. You might think you are down to wood when you really aren’t. I used the heat gun and scraper to get down to the actual wood when I did my similar project on the exact same guitar. Ping me if you want any guidance or some pics of my walnut veneer with binding.
@MilianMalivukMusic6 жыл бұрын
I know, it DOES take forever. It's easy to see though where you got to the bare wood because that is much lighter in colour. I think I'll take out the heatgun again and try very carefully to get the rest off... I'm interested, if you want you can send me some pictures of that project via soulhenge@gmail.com !

You're using too much heat if the paint/primer starts to bubble. Modulate the heat with your hand or turn down the gun to get a better experience

It's what I thought aswell, but it was just enough heat the get the laquer off.
