It's having a proclivity towards music, some people can just grab one and it's natural, given the fact that he has played at the grand 'ol oprey and done numerous tracks for so many different artists and is payed to play and practice it's not surprising that he can remember all of those riffs from memory, he's probably played them a thousand times and has favorites from his childhood. When he comes back to the Detroit area, he is just like everyone else, he hangs out with his old friends and goes to the mall. I was at a Rob Zombie show a few years ago, and a girl sitting next to me showed me her phone form earlier in the day. He played at DTE Music Theater, and there is a huge mall about 10 minutes away. The girl at the concert worked one of those kiosks, selling some sort or trinkets or something. Anyway, she recognized him and waved him over to her booth and chatted with him for a quite a while. He took a bunch of pictures with her and she said that he hung out with her, helping to sell her stuff from the kiosk to anyone who walked by. lol He is a very down to earth and humble guy, which I guess is why he has a rabid fan base, and is in such high demand as session player. To a large degree- a guitar is a guitar man- you don't need to play them to get used to them or anything like that. They're standardized enough that unless it's an odd ball like a fretless or a 7 string or something like that- you can just pick it up and play really. And if you're playing quality instruments like these- you can bet they're going to be super easy to play- they play so effortlessly and with such beautiful tone it actually requires less skill and talent to make it sound good.

Things like this prove the point that ya gotta be versatile. Not only as a guitarist but a musician period. See John doing that 'chicken pickin'? He's not just solely a 'Rock', 'Metal', 'Industrial' musician. He knows the whole 'Sphere' The '50's stuff, the Jazzy riffs, on and on. Back in the 'Day'? Guitarists were expected to know How To Play Their Instruments. Vocalists were Expected to Know How To Sing, etc. He's not working with just 1 'Bag O' Tricks'.
