Ibanez Edge Tremelo Height Adjustment - SET SCREW

Finally! After watching dozens of videos, someone has given an explanation of those set screws. Seems pretty important to know doesn’t it?!!

For those interested.... the Lock screw uses a 1.5mm Allen wrench. The Height adjustment uses a 3mm. I found this out the hard way 😂

The screws on the posts come unlocked from the factory (as far as I’ve read on the internet) as to avoid users to damage the guitar by forcing the bolts. At least, mine, came with the screws “loose”, so I was able to set-up the guitar no problem. I actually found out the “hard way” that the screws were loose from the factory because I read about it AFTER setting up the guitar. If those tiny inside screws were tightnened, I wouldn’t have been able to move the posts with the big Allen wrench. I believe I will leave them unlocked, that way I’ll never mess up hehe. But, just to reconfirm, these DO come loose from the factory, right? Lol

I owned a prestige Ibanez and I didn't know at the time it has set screws... but when I figured it out, they were definitely locked... but it's probably up to the store who sets them up... mine was bought through a guitar center.... so perhaps they did the setup and locked it down!. Cheers!

Awesome thank you. I ended up replacing the 5 was switch and will be editing a video on that... unsure why, but EVERY ibanez I've owned, the 5 way switch goes bad very fast (bad = scratchy contacts when switching positions). I have the old switch I plan on tearing apart to see what the problem was...

I definitely would "loosen" the set screw, move the main height adj. up or down, then snug the set screw. The intent of the set screw is to help keep the post from moving if you remove the bridge. it basically pushes from the body up into the center of the post causing the threads of the post to be under tension. If you try to move the post while this is under tension, it could damage the threaded insert. I hope this helps.

Yeah the set screw thing I got it, I mean the string tension. Do you detune your guitar to minimize knife edge possible damage of you can adjust the height of the strings while on tension? Thanks ♥️

@@ErinBlueBird Oh sorry... duh... It's been a long day... OK - I've owned many floyds' and Ibanez's bridges... I've done it both ways where detuning vs. just making adjustments. I've not had any issues with either technique... I actually made an adj. to my RG550 a few days ago and did not reduce the tension.

Thank you for your video. I wish I've watched it earlier because... I've adjusted my Ibanez RG550 tremolo without turning the screws on the posts first... I hope it didn't break anything but since that day, when I use my tremolo, the guitar doesn't stay tuned. When I divebomb down, all my strings are tuned down and when i divebomb up, it comes back to the right tuning. Please, do you know if I've broken my trem or is it another issue ?

Hi Vince - so a few things - and you might have to take your trem off to inspect the knife edge. I've had some trems that the knife edge took some damage which caused it not to return to center. Unsure if this is what is happening to you.. In removing your trem, you can then pull one post at a time and inspect the set screw. If I had your guitar on my bench, I'd start all over and inspect the posts, knife edge and then begin a completely new setup. On the locking nut side, I would first look to see if anything is "loose" then inspect on the tuning peg side, do the strings lay "flat" on the locking nut? If not, then there's likely one problem that if the string isn't sitting flat in the locking nut, when you "tighten" it, strings will go "sharp"... another thing just to look at... feel free to post back and perhaps I can continue to help you figure out the issue. I will post back even if I've found a solution :-) I now remember why I've sold all my Floyd Rose guitars when I was twenty lol... I still don't know why guitar builders don't make trems with ball bearing like Vigier do. I've had one Vigier Supra 7 and even if the sound was disappointing, the tremolo was amazing ! Unfortunately not... you can only adjust the two sides independently.

@@nigelsmith721 in theory, it's supposed to. but when you have a compound radius, that is where this is not always true. i.e. 10 to 14. If the bridge is a 10, then it will be higher in the center vs. 14 (which is should be) where then it will be flatter at the bridge.

@@ajlsoundwave indeed but even with adjustable saddles it'll always be a compromise - i'm guessing they'll have erred on the side of the larger radius.

@@nigelsmith721 one trick is to go out and buy a feeler gauge set and with a dremel, cut your own spacers to fit under the saddles... i.e. set the string height to the center two saddles, then use the shims for the other 4. I've done this with custom builds (14-20" radius necks) and floyd rose trems...

The inner screws of my Ibanez Zero Edge 2 (of an RG370FMZ) seem to have 2 mm width.

I have a rg420fb ,Ibanez bridge not sure the model name doesn't look like a set screw in the stud looks like a small hole wrenches won't fit

@@ericmcfarland3564 I looked your guitar up and it does come with an Edge III tremolo - here is a link to the manual for that tremolo and on page 2, it does not show a set screw, so basically, you would only adjust the 3mm key on the stud.
