The Ibanez Gio GSR200 is super popular because it's so cheap, but is it any good?
Despite its popularity and favorable reviews elsewhere online, the resounding chorus from all our pro bassist reviewers is that this bass sucks. Don’t buy it.
My one regret with selecting basses for these reviews is that I would love to hear the cheapest bass in the Ibanez SR line up against the Yamaha TRBX304 we look at later, they’re at the same price point and have a lot in common. The Ibanez SRs I’ve played are much better basses than this GSR200.
UPDATE: I've heard from a lot of commenters who love their GSR200s, so maybe we just got a bad one. Which means you should at least buy it in person, because the quality control may not be great.

I got this as a birthday present for myself b/c covid-19 made it hard to go out and try lots of different basses, I was finding my Squier a bit difficult to play, this was the only other instrument I've played significantly, and I found it easier to play than the Squier. I love that Josh and his reviewers are willing to tear gear to shreds! :) Their criticisms make sense to me, but I also think they don't matter a ton for me at this point. Can't wait to try the Yamaha one day.

The neck buzz you're getting is because for some reason on every cheap Ibanez bass I've used they crank the truss rod tight and it usually has no neck relief and sometimes has back bow. Loosening the truss rod a few turns helps immensely.

I love comments such as this. A great example that a cheap bass can work with the proper SETUP!!!! why don't people mention THAT to beginners??? I feel like it's really annoying and wasteful to not tell newcomers that they CAN buy a cheap bass and enjoy it a ton if they do or pay for a good setup to it -_-

It's all about a correct set-up. That was the first thing I did with the one I'm currently using, but I had to test a lot of GSR's to get a good one. Most had issues with a horrible neck, noisy pickups, and electronics (pots to be exact).

Honestly, I've had a Gio since 2010 as my first bass and it's really hard to beat. Played in bands with it, recorded with it, spent years with it as an only bass. The finish is excellent, no dings, no chips, nothing at all. The active circuit is...lackluster, but you can get some really nice tones from from the passive side of things, especially that P neck pickup. The weight is also a big feature - it's very light! I had a 62 reissue Fender jazz that I barely played because the thing was a fretted dumbbell. The Ibanez won't break your back after a few hours of practice, both sitting down and standing up. Is it the best bass in the world? no, not at all. But it's a damn fine bass, especially for that price point.

Interesting series of beginner bass reviews. I especially like the fair-minded comments. It's easier to believe when the reviewers are not trying to pitch any particular brand or model. I think the videos could add more value by including comments on suggestions to resolve any noted issues. For example, "if I owned this bass I would want to change the" ...pickups to ..... ...strings to.... ...and probably work my amp settings to something like ...... This feedback could help somebody take an inexpensive bass, invest a little money, and have a much-improved beginner bass. Keep up the good work! I always enjoy your videos and often share them with beginner bass players.

100%. I’ve searched all over town and found 0 entry-level lefty basses. $600 range and up we’re around here and there, everything else was special order, and most were back ordered. Being a beginner who just wants to learn some grooves so I can jam with my son as he learns guitar and drums, I couldn’t justify laying down that kind of dough. As luck would have it, I happened upon this bass in a mountain music shop for $200 and jumped at the chance just to get an affordable lefty bass in my hands. Day three in the garage and we’re making noise that kinda-sorta sounds like music...

However, the fact is, I think this bass really just needs a good setup. Mine was a guitar center demo bass bought straight off the wall, and so it was likely set up at the shop beforehand and was already playing fine. The truss rod seems cranked too tight on this one, apparently a common issue with Ibanez. The action was too high for my taste, so I lowered the bridge saddles and it now feels just as good as some basses I’ve played that were much higher in price, and not a single fret buzzes! (When I hit the fret properly, that is.) Most of the time, these inexpensive instruments can be easily adjusted to make them play really good!

I like this channel but challenge the verdict here. I was lucky enough to have this bass bought for me approx 12 years ago. Still goes strong, plays great, feels great, sounds great since I replaced the strings recently and gave it a service. Not sure if the model changed design and they now suck or if this jusy isn't meeting too high of a standard but I would recommend it to anyone wanting to pick up a low budget but decently made bass. I'm really grateful to have gotten one and to still have it.

I think it may have been helpful to know if you tested this bass straight out of the box or did you set it up, change strings etc. I think I'll still buy it bc at my skill level and the music I'm interested in playing the lack of articulation etc isn't going to be problem.

Same basic color and appearance as the one in this video. But for $60 with the case, I guess I'm Ok. Most pawn shops would try to get $550. Lol. Glad to read you like yours.

Sam Yaza I love Fender basses. The Aerodyne Jazz is great and Fender P basses are great. Just never played a Squier jazz that I liked stock. I have a few vintage style basses and some very modern, so I’m pretty broad in what I like, and Squier P Basses or the new(ish) Jazz Contemporary Actives are perfectly fine instruments. I’d just never choose a Squier jazz over other stuff in the price range.

Not only that James but I swear they play better too. I started on one of those squires, (and they weren't horrendous,) but the action felt a little high too and i swear the nut width is wider. I tried my buddies GEO bass and it felt like a huge upgrade from the Squire I used to have. In my opinion it sounds better, feels and plays better. It sells for a bargain at $180. I bought this as my first bass, coming from guitar. I liked the sound - though I don't use the bass boost on it. My only problem was the fretboard - I've never had to dress the frets on a brand new instrument before, but the frets were sticking out on both sides of the fretboard by almost 1/32". The only reason I ended up buying it anyway was it was the only one in town in the finish I wanted. But, after a bit of filing and restringing, it plays OK. I might fiddle a bit with the electronics and maybe replace the bridge pickup. I'll also probably eventually get a better bass, but this is fine to learn on.

But doesn't mean that I hate fender. fender basses, on the other hand, was awesome to pick one too, but if i were to pick a fender bass, i'd rather pick with a 24 frets, because, in my training, i was fond of using 24 frets of a bass. and uh, to be honest, this is my first time to endorse an ibanez gio. it only cost 8000 pesos in philippines. in u.s. , it's 152.72 $. it's a good bass to endorse, so um, it's worth it. :)

I do like that you guys did not sugar coat it and gave an honest review. Also, I change the strings and cleaned the fingerboard and body once a year with good polishes. I did a sound test of this bass to a bass forum and many peopele thought it was a $450+ bass. I want to upgrade my bass, price range $400-500 any ideas?

The bass doesn't suck at all. I just did a setup for one of these. It's lightweight and sleek and very comfortable. The spalted maple finish of the one I had here is beautiful. There's a bit of fret buzz here and there, especially with a low action, but it's not being picked up by the electronics at all so it's really not an issue. The pickups are OK for the money. The bass boost is really cool. The build quality, again, is absolutely fine for the asking price. I think it's a fine bass especially for beginners in terms of design, features and pricing.

My first bass was a Squier P-Bass. A little while later, a friend found me a GSR200 at a garage sale. They both cost a little over $100 used. I sold the Squier and kept the Ibanez. It is lighter, better sounding, and more comfortable to hold and play. The tone might not be the most versatile, but it is decent for the price. My first bass instructor seemed to think it was a good bass. If I had to recommend a bass to a beginner, this would be it. I haven't played a Yamaha, but maybe I would take a look at one of those, if it were in the same price range.

In this review the bass sounds nothing like mine I don’t know why , in this one it has a lot more tone and is funkier and stuff mine jsut doesn’t sound the same for some reason could it be the amp or are you using different strings? Or is it the way they are playing it?

For a $200 bass it's really solid. I don't really consider myself a bassist, I play predominately acoustic guitar, and when I do play bass...I typically don't play up past the 7th fret. Just very basic stuff and I generally only play it for recording. It's marketed, I think, as a beginner bass pretty much. But for the money, you can't go wrong. This is the most popular bass in the world for this price range. Also, pretty much any bass is going to have some fret buzz out of the box. Just needs a truss rod adjustment. My $2,500 Martin acoustic had fret buzz lol

don't get what's really wrong with the tones ... I am a guitar player in the first place but playing a bit of bass on the tunes I cover, so I am definitely not a bass player I admit ... however I bought two Ibanez low prices bass and I love them ... the Ibanez GSRM20-MPL GIO miKro (I have small hands) and the Ibanez SR300EB (I tried the the Gretsch G2220 and the Music Man Stingray SS4 and did not like them at all) And quite frankly, you have plenty of bass sounds for the money with the Ibanez (between 180 to 250 euros max budget). For a beginner bass player who does not want to become a bass expert, that is largely enough don't you think ? ... but I would love to know what short scale bass you would then recommend but that are affordable ? Thanks and thanks for the videos, they are really great, funny and helpful !

Bought mine as my first and only bass back in 1998. I can't say it's good or bad other than it's how I learned and have hundreds of hours on it. I'll keep it in the collection and add another intermediate bass someday!

hi, do you think that GSR 180 would be an option for a beginner? It has some different characteristics compared with this one.
@djijspeakerguy4628
@djijspeakerguy4628 Жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure the GSR180 might actually be better! It seems to be Ibanez’s take on a J-bass. is a more simple design, and contains a j style neck pickup, which I also really like. I own a GSR200, the bass reviewed here. Mine plays far better than one reviewed here, because some may need a setup, and I think if you are going to get any Ibanez, it is good to be able to play it before you buy it. The GSR180 does not have the active system in it. To me, a bass without active pickups like the gsr180 is actually better. They seem to be far more versatile in terms of their tone, and they don’t have the annoying battery that can run out in the middle of a performance. I think you’ll be more than satisfied with a GSR180 bass.

Was planning on buying an Ibanez Talman TMB100. How does it compare to this, and does it have this DOOM knob you are talking about?

Tmb's all have active boost and cut for bass and treble,I have the Tmb 310,I keep both on the mid notch,it sounds good like that,im trying to think the 100's have the pj setup,my 310 has a ph setup,that's what I recommend you get,the humbucker at the bridge gives you SO much more tone wise,if I still gigged the 310 with Rotosound strings would be my go to,you can get any tone you want from simple Fender style p bass all the way to a stingray tone with everything in between,now I will inform you the hardware on the tmb's are junk,I've had to replace my tuners,both my stack knobs simply broke in my hand just turning them,now that could just be that sometimes you get a bad bass at a 250$ price point,but I give the heads up anyway,I still have no regrets buying my tmb

Have the original version w/o the bass boost. The neck is better than any Fender P bass I've played. I had some Duncan's installed & some Carvin strings & the music teacher/ pickup installer absolutely loved the bass, mainly bragged about the neck/ fretboard how great it felt. I was actually surprised by his reaction. Played bass for 35 yrs & have no complaints.

Maybe in the USA you can compare an Ibanez with a Fender price wise but here in South Africa a Fender is generally five times the price of an Ibanez. So our options are much more limited, it’s an Ibanez or something nobody knows where it comes from when you are on a tight budget.

I have been playing this bass for more than 10 years: the bass boost is garbage. I never use it! As for the rest of the bass, once it's properly set up the sound and playability are actually quite decent, I can get stuff done with it. But if I had to buy another ~200€ bass today, I'd definitely consider other options.

It took me a long time to find a really good GSR200. Bad necks, horrible intonation problems, noisy pots, but I found one. It's a walnut-stained model, and the neck is VERY good. I removed the crap original pickups, and installed a DiMarzio PJ set. I also replaced the cheap pots with CTS pots, and shielded the pickup, and electronics cavities. I paid $185 for the bass...it was on clearance at my local G.C. Total spent on the bass, was $350 including tax where applicable. It sounds awesome, and the boom control works well with the DiMarzios.
