I must apologise if I've offended any 8 string fans out there. Its not my thing & I don't enjoy listening to some forms of metal, but I do appreciate how incredibly gifted guys like Tosin Abasi are, and I would never disrespect the time & effort they put in to get that good! All music has its place (except euro pop!) and if you like it then don't let anyone tell you its not cool - especially not an old fart like me!
@DevinThe24210 жыл бұрын
The trick is to do an almost percussive rhythm, like Metallica but on a bigger scale. You just have to learn how to switch between palm muting and notes really fast, then the rest I octaves and messing around with scales, bends and harmonics.
@brownshit110 жыл бұрын
If you don't like it, you don't like it. You shouldn't have to apologise, people are too soft. To me it's just obscure jazz with heavy distortion.

It was hilarious to see your reaction, worked 9 years as a webdesigner for MaxGuitarStore in Holland, and I always was the one with my mad downtuned seven strings between all those blues fanatics on their GIbsons & Fenders and they all reacted far worse (like "it isnt music anymore"). Not need to be offended in any way it was clear you where still respectful towards this type of music. Its all in good fun.

The trick with an 8 string is to play like a 6 string but with two lower strings added on. Don't ride the 8 and 7 strings or you will be lost doing Djent forever. I find the sounds of eight strings are very repetitive because everyone seems to play djent on them, save Mr Abasi. Also sorry to hear about the separation Rob and Lee, don't worry it will work itself out.

The m80m is an amazing guitar, If I could only keep 1 guitar it would be the m80m. I find that the m80m design is well thought out, with the leg rest far forward and the bridge far back, both making the 29.4 inch scale comfortable to play sitting or standing and seem much shorter than it is. I love the forearm cut, the profile allows the hand to fall in just the right spot. It balances well. The bridge is great with the fine tuners and the locking nut. The M80m's 29.4 inch scale cuts the Inharmonicity which is where the overtone frequencies of the note played are out of tune with the fundamental. Higher inharmonicity results in bass notes that have a muddy, buzzy, sound whose pitch is more difficult to discern. also For a low F#1, a 30 inch scale will have 32% better harmonic content and 15% more tension than 28 inch scale guitar.

I love the way an extended range instrument makes you rethink the way you play. In fact, I love it so much I play a long scale 7 string guitar tuned a full step down in my coverband, and we practically play everything! It takes real effort mastering every song that gets flung my way on a 'totally different' instrument. At first, the guitar was playing me. I can honestly say it'll make you a better guitarist in the long run.

I'm glad he actually played the 8 string, not necessarily the way it's supposed to be played, but some what of how people would think of how to play it. I see too many demos of guys trying to play extended range guitars and playing it like a six, and not utilizing the extra string in a different style. I feel like it doesn't show the guitars capabilities. But I digress, he did a great job.

and Meshuggah contacted Ibanez in 2000 to develop the first 8-string guitars & 9 string guitars, as heard on "Future Breed Machine" later perfected on "Chaosphere" .. in the process being hailed as the fathers of "Math Metal" & likewise being one of the greatest musical groups ever; who's timing & orchestration rivals the greats like Tchaichvsky, Mozart & Bach. Theres more to life than Steve Vai .. Lol. He's certainly not a 1st of anything. Yet a great SOLO artist.

a little novelty takes over when you first encounter that many strings. but after a while, it wears off and the rest of your repertoire / vocabulary translates over. the fun part is when you're forced to use different inversions to play certain tunes properly. at least, that's been my experience. that was a fun video to watch, thanks rob!!

Pro tip if you ever want to try an 8-string - treat it like a regular guitar, it's not alien technology, it's a regular guitar with a wider fretboard. Don't even think about those extra 2 strings, just play it!
@marceldesutter367710 жыл бұрын
4:34 You can actually change tuning with the FX Edge III-8? I thought it was a locking design.
@alausund10 жыл бұрын
would like to point out that Meshugga was thinking about using just bass guitars, the reason why they changed it up was because bass guitar wasn't tight enough. that's why they made an 8 string in a 29.4" scale length to use thicker strings on it (bass strings). "So why 8 strings? they ask" because bass isn't tight enough...

While I enjoyed the humor, I do wish you guys would've prepared a little bit more for this video. Rabbea is an excellent player, and has experience in ERGs, but it didn't feel like he put a lot of work into coming up with good demo riffs. Rob did a fine job of demoing that RG8 Iron Label a while back, so it's not like he can't play 8-strings just fine. I also wish that less focus would've been put into demoing just the low end. You can get a pretty good sense of what the guitar is capable of in that regard from a pretty quick clip, but the rest of the fretboard was sadly neglected.

Zac postin92788 yeah bro, i got the same feeling after watching this, just because somebody does something different it seems so easy to laugh at when all your buddies scoff at it i guess.. All the naysayers and 6 stringers who dont get it, your really narrow minded, grow up..Meshuggah is WAY beyond the likes of most modern musicians today as far as im concerned maybe not as flashy as some other bands but not all of us puke rainbows. The sound Is not for everyone nor is extended range guitars (im sure you'll be laughing at a multi scale guitar next), one thing i can say is those of us who do get it are laughing at you the same way! At your corny, heard it all a million times before, sheep style noodling and basic guitar sound that was new in the fifties and sixties. I would never call out anyone or laugh at there gear because its scares you or because of what limitations you put on yourselves. The future is upon you, Djentlemen..you should rename this channel to Andertons cliche guitar snobbery string shaming show. Unsubbing....

I wonder when a guitar amp's output transformer will allow enough of the eighth string's fundamental through to cause overexcursion of the speakers. This is bound to happen at some point, as many players of extended range guitars have not learned to think about gear the way bass players (and Chapman Stick players) do.
