Basically to give the cliffnotes version. Claire (opal) is in a horrible family. Which you figured out but it shows the billboard which shows a happy family. Clarie makes this world in her head from the people on the billboard. Showing better versions of her family members. Showing her mom treat her better. Her dad focusing on her and her grandpa just even saying hi to her. Thats why she panics at the end. She figures out that wasn’t her real life. This is. So she goes back into her world as a way of coping with her situation.

That's also why she dances with the burger; since she has lived such an isolated life she doesn't even know what to do with a burger, what to do with the thing she's spent all her life fantasizing about holding along with her "family".

I think one of the things that made me the most sad was reading comments after watching opal and read someone saying that: 1-At the beggining of the story, Opal dances when she's given the burger bcs she doesn't know that she's supposed to eat it. She's never seen one and doesn't understand that it's food. 2- The "nice" version of the grandpa also has dementia. But he just treats Opal nicely. 3-In "we see you, Opal", the line is "and in your eyes you'll stay" instead of something like "and in your hearts you'll stay" because Opal hasn't had anyone tell her she has a place in their heart and is probably unfamiliar to the concept. She just uses the word "eyes" bcs she probably has heard "I see you" (not directed to her, clearly) and wants to be seen like her grandpa watches the tv, her father sees himself and her mother sees... probably hallucinations. She wants to be seen, and that's why she's so fixated on the windows noises, that are her own cryings, because she wants it to be seen. And she probably doesn't even know the concept of being loved.

This story really is amazing. The three adults in the house repeatedly call her Claire, and at first you think that they are just mistaking her for someone else until the end when you realize that Opal is a fabricated imaginary identity to escape from her abusive household. I don't know if you've read the comments under that video yet but some people have pointed out that at the beginning she never eats the burger and just holds it, and it likely insinuates that she might not understand that it is food. It's so horrible when you realize that she never left that house, she was trapped all along. It's all done with almost no dialogue, from the shots of the mess that is the rooms of the three adults at the beginning, to the empty cot we see for a moment in the attic.

Ngl, it kinda baffles me that many people’s initial viewing leaves them confused. Jack did such an incredible job making the story VERY clear without outright telling you anything. Maybe it’s more the nature of reaction content that leads people to missing the bigger picture, when you’re more focused on trying to entertain an audience than the material in front of you. Or maybe this particular story just hit really close and is thus easier to parse for people who have a… familiarity with some of the themes.

I hope that it's because many people cannot imagine (or relate to) a child coming up in such an awful environment that they couldn't imagine a child staring at a billboard and desperately forcing an imagined reality. Because after relating to too much of what I saw, I understood quick.

I see planty people have already told you that opal is clair, so here is another fun detail: at the start of the short Clair has no idea what to do with the burger, so she starts to dance, couple that with her scrawny design And a pretty morbid picture comes up. Also watch shop it's really good.

Shop is one you'll replay a lot. It's much lighter than Opal, and the music is incredibly catchy. Both are masterpieces. There's something about claymation that is just captivating to watch.

Btw the reason the characters in the beginning have such big eyes is because Opal/Claire desperately wants to be seen and noticed by her family. Also the reason Opal has such a slim face is because she's very malnourished as no one takes care of her. She also dances with te burger for this exact reason- she literally doesn't know what it is and dances because she thinks that's what the child on the billboard is doing

Man, this animation is great. If you rewatch it, you might notice some things. Long story short, this animation is about abuse. Nobody is mistaking Opal for Claire, Claire wishes she was Opal from the billboard, and had a kind loving family. The theme song the billboard family sings says "we see you", but her actual family does not. The grandfather is blind, the father surrounds himself with mirrors, and the mother is too intoxicated to see well. It's a very, _very_ sad story. It was also one of the first things I saw of Jack's that was released _after_ I became a fan of his, on Halloween at midnight in 2020. The other Adult Swim animation "Shop: A Pop Opera" is much more lighthearted. It gets a bit heavy at times, but ultimately sillier. Also, it was originally aired as a daily miniseries for 6 days. Also also, I'm pretty sure a song from Shop is one of his most popular songs on Jack Stauber's Micropop. Glsd you enjoyed! Always great to see more Stauber content!

Also another detail I haven't seen anyone mention: the white lace on the curtains and that comes out of the doors and windows Opal looks at represents her innocence. In the beginning the mother is trying to protect her innocence by drawing the lace curtains, this is Claire/Opal trying to ignore her situation and retain her innocence to it. And the image of lace coming out of the windows and doors is her innocence literally flying out out the window when faced with the reality of her horrible living conditions

Guys, I have a theory. The Mirror Man was "turned down" by his surgeon and now he's "living a nightmare". Those are two medical terms. Basically it means that they think where was no mean when there definitely was, and now he's living his nightmare because he failed his face from them not letting him.

This whole story breaks my heart. I didn’t understand it at first, but when it got to the last part where her “billboard family” zoomed out of her head, I understood. Knowing there are actual households and people like this is the hardest part of stomaching this down. Honestly, although I’ve never experienced anything as horrible as Claire did, I used to use my mind to escape from the world and use the same coping mechanism she did, which I know a lot of the viewers used too. The only real thing that brought me out was my best friend introducing me to actual love, whereas I’m so much happier now. The only way I experienced love though was through God, “… because God is love” (1 John 4:16 ) I know this probably seems silly or forceful (which I’m really sorry if it does) to some people because I know a lot of people have had bad experiences in religions , but what I found was much better than a religion could ever give me. Kids like Claire exist and they have to act like the parent to their own parents because their parents are narcissistic, like Claire’s family. Narcissistic people don’t recognize their own narcissism alot like her mom, so that could’ve added up to why Claire felt like she was trapped and had nowhere else to go but to her own head, to her own made up family and in her room (which is probably why the opera singing came from there, because it was her only safe space in the entire house, which makes this so much worse). The whole film is saddening and every time I watch an analysis or rewatch it I’m literally so overwhelmed. Sorry if I went too analytical with this, I just really think Jack did a great job with it - and if you like Opal then Shop would be great to check out !!

Thisis my explanation so a kid named opal is in her house eating dinner and she dancee she sees the house she goes in and sees a bunch people with problems one being addicted to the tv the other one is addicted tohis face and last one is drugs normal right? So all of them sing their problems. Opal escapes oh yeah, they call her clair. So opal escapes them and goes to the attic and sees the sign called opals burger this is the sad part is the parents in the first part where her imagination and ones with problems where her real parents so so clair or opal just want love and her only comfort is her imagination that keep her company. Sad right?
